UPDATE : $75,000 Stretch Goal!
We hit our original funding goal of $50,000 on Day 10! Thank you for making this happen. We never expected our community to rally so quickly and strongly for this project. We had poured everything into making our Kickstarter First Edition amazing - Each book will be hand-stamped and numbered, with foil printing on the cover and a tear-away pattern sheet at 100%. What more could we dream up?
You've inspired us to go for gold. We are now aiming to reach an extra $25,000 so that we can print this First Edition as a stunning hardcover. We think this will truly make your special First Edition copy a treasured keepsake. If we can reach this goal together, then each copy you have ordered through Kickstarter will be from this limited edition hardcover run.
We are encouraging shop owners to join our handmade getaway journey by pre-ordering books through our two retailer packages. Please share this book with your favourite shop owner and encourage them to help us reach our stretch goal. Only shops who pledge via Kickstarter will have First Edition books. Our current list of exclusive retailers is posted here! We'd love to add your shop to this list once we receive your Retailer Package pre-order.
In addition to our stretch goal, we are excited to add a second opportunity to escape to Makers Luck! We hope a second group of friends will scoop up this ultimate getaway. The rewards were updated recently and there are still tool kits and other fun options to choose from. You can always increase your pledge to another level by logging in to your account. We're excited to hit our next goal and make your First Edition copies of Handmade Getaway in hardcover!

Why Independent Publishing?
We want this book to go directly from our community to yours—no middlemen. The independent route lets us share every detail of our experience in its most authentic form. In the pages of this beautiful book, you’ll find the pro tips, charts, planning lists and project ideas that have made our getaways smooth sailing—so you can use them to build your own special memories.
After years of hosting our own handmade getaways, we’ve maximized small spaces, devised plans for sharing responsibilities around food and supplies, and created a coveted experience everyone looks forward to all year round. We’ve learned lessons that only come with years of experience—and the biggest one is that a little planning goes a long way.
Karyn has been documenting our getaways since day one, long before we realized we had book content, so we had great images to share.
Then we partnered with Andrew Cloutier to bring the book to life. His clean, classic design makes for beautiful storytelling and clear communication.
We are so proud of the work we’ve done, the projects we’ve created and the knowledge we’ve gathered—and we’re so excited to share it with you.
Karyn Valino, Co-author, Photographer
Karyn opened the workroom in 2007, dreaming of a place the local maker community could gather. She didn’t realize that the workroom's doors would open to a flood of enthusiastic crafters, strangers would become best friends and families would grow before her eyes. Sewing has brought more community, friendship and love to her life than she could ever have imagined—and she’s excited to share her strategies for sustaining creativity and friendship in Homemade Getaways.
Karyn shot all the gorgeous photography of our getaways to transport you to places far from home—but very close to our hearts. In addition to clear patterns, all the step-by-step photography you see in the book was her labour of love.
“Handmade getaways are a rare chance to gift ourselves the freedom to sew morning to night, to eat all the delicious things, to take care of our friends, but also to let them take care of us. There is nothing like it.” —Karyn
Jacqueline Sava Clarke, Co-author
Jacqueline is the founder and Director of Possibilities at Soak Wash Inc. Her company makes, markets and internationally distributes Soak modern laundry care and Flatter ironing spray, which have a significant following among sewers, quilters, knitters and crafters. She teaches design strategy and lectures on entrepreneurialism and business development. In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, Jacqueline is a talented maker who loves sharing her passion with friends who are fellow sewing enthusiasts.
“The first time I took my sewing machine to the cottage, it was a magical mix of all my favorite things: the quiet view of the lake, the warm summer sun and the humming of my machine as I worked away. I knew immediately that I needed to bring my friends to experience this magic, and so began the handmade getaways.” —Jacqueline
May your handmade getaways fill you with as much joy and satisfaction as ours do. Please join us by pre-ordering your first edition book today.
Risks and challenges
As best friends and authors, we are passionately committed to bringing this book to life. We work off each other’s strengths. Our skills complement each other. We’ve immersed ourselves in this new world of book writing and publishing. While we aren’t experts yet, we’re getting there. With our retail, wholesale and manufacturing backgrounds, we are already experts at packing, shipping and distributing things, so the books will flow easily into that mix.
We are working morning, noon and night, between the shop, Soak, teaching, life, the twins, family emergencies and (shorter than usual) getaways, always fitting in time to move this book forward. We’ve consulted editor friends, industry experts, pattern designers, graphic designers, book makers, book publishers, printers, magazine editors and writers to make sure we bring the best possible book to life. Every element of putting it together has been a team effort.
We spent the last two years crafting the manuscript, perfecting the projects and pushing forward through some huge life challenges that made us stop and question whether we should just take the easy route and put it on hold indefinitely. But each time we resolve to work through it together, and get it done.
You may see websites featuring our book, or have seen it pop up on Amazon. It’s because we originally had a publishing contract, but it is no longer active. Our separation with our publisher was for all the right reasons and we each hold the other in high regard. It just wasn’t the right fit.
So while we try to clean up the websites still listing our book for sale, rest assured that the only place to pre-order this book is here, on Kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
