About this project
“ The Young Shuffle” is a story of courage, kindness and determination. Cliff is a 61 year old farmer that, in the midst of his continuous works of charity, decides to run one of the most difficult marathons in the planet. Armed with confidence and an immaculate work ethic, can Cliff Young finish the race?
Cliff Young lives on a farm with his mother. He is a quiet spoken man who loves humanity and wants to make an impact in the lives of his small town. He may not be remembered by many, but he will be remembered by everyone whose life he touched. He reads the newspaper each morning as he eats his cold cereal and looks for opportunities in his community to make a difference. He is very attracted to those who need him.
One day he falls in love with Mary. She has a daughter and a husband who beats both of them. He suddenly asks her to marry him by writing a note and placing it in a box with some money for her. He hardly sees a chance because of a 30 year age gap. He saved her daughter the night before by stopping her father who was kicking her in the street. So he starts looking for a way to get her attention. He finds in the newspaper an article about a race. It is an ultra marathon, a 550 miles race.
He works on the farm the day of the race. He looks down at his watch and runs to his old truck and starts his drive toward the race. He arrives just in time in overalls and work boots. After nearly being escorted off the course for being a suspected audience member he got back on the starting line and the race begins. Everyone passes him leaving him far behind in their dust.
He keeps running along in his awkward shuffle. He runs through the days and through the night without sleep only stopping for bathroom breaks. The average person takes over 8 days to finish and only 5% of contestants even finish the race. He keeps running, taking out his dentures because the rattling noise is bothering him. His right boot starts to fall apart after day four. Now he is nearly a day ahead of the second place runner and he finishes the race in less than six days beating the record by nearly two days.
He is given $10,000.00 which he gives to the next five runners who come though the finish line. Only those six finish the race. He leaves the race and Mary says yes to his proposal and they are married.
