NOTE:  The game's name has been changed from "Cyvase" to "Battlemind". This is not associated with George R. R. Martin or HBO in any way whatsoever.  Per Kickstarter, the reward tiers can't be changed and still say "Cyvase" as the game name.

Game contents: 115 cards (22 character, 92 terrain, and 1 title)

Battlemind is a medieval-themed battle strategy game in which two players, each with 10 character cards, try to capture/kill the other player's King. Inspired by the game from George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels (HBO's Game of Thrones is based on this series), Battlemind combines the strategic elements of Chess, Stratego, and Blitzkrieg to create a an easy to learn but hard to master game with infinite replayability. This game is for anyone who loves strategy games - not just fans of the books!

What makes Battlemind special? Instead of being played like a typical card game (dealing/drawing), it is played more like a board game, with players setting up a "board" made of terrain cards and moving character cards across them.

Like chess, each character card has a certain number of spaces in which it can move. But that's where the similarities end. Each character has a strength value (1-8) which dictates whether it can capture/kill another character as well as certain advantages and disadvantages over other characters. From the lowly Rabble (rabble is like an angry mob) to the powerful Dragon, every unit has a purpose.  How you use them is up to you!

Finally, each terrain type can benefit or hinder your character. Use terrain to slow your enemy down, protect your fortress, and even hide from Dragons!

Ultimately, how you set up your terrain, arrange your army, and advance your units will determine whether you will be the victor or the vanquished. You'll laugh at your opponent when he places a crucial unit on his front line that you are able to capture easily, but will be crushed when that same placement allows him to capture your dragon on his first move in the next game!

Will you create a defensive stronghold and make your advesary come to you?  Or will you storm the front lines in hopes of catching your opponent off guard?

It's your decision.  The fate of the Kingdom rests on your shoulders. Fight for honor.  Fight for glory.  But remember: in the game of Battlemind, every move can mean victory or crushing defeat.

If you're a fan of HBO's Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire, the series of novels upon which the show is based, you may already know about the chess-like game many of the characters play called cyvasse.

After reading the books, I became fascinated with this game. I immediately went looking around on the internet for all of the information I could find. I wanted to play cyvasse, but couldn't find a cheap and portable physical version. I'm a maker and really enjoy creating things, so I decided to create a version myself.

In the novels, George R. R. Martin loosely describes the game pieces and how the game is played, but doesn't go into any detail about the rules. So, I took what I could from the books (The 10 specific characters/ placing terrain) and some rule ideas I had found online and just used my imagination from there. According to Martin, cyvasse was inspired by "a bit of chess, a bit of blitzkrieg, a bit of stratego. Mix well and add imagination."

The game is completely designed, manufacturers are waiting to produce the cards, and the prototype has been tested. I need a minimum of $2500 to order a first print run of the game and get it to backers. I hope you enjoy and commit to helping me bring it to life!

To create the board upon which the characters are played, each player places 32 terrain cards (20 Grassland, 4 Forest, 4 Mountain, 3 Wetland, 1 Fortress) in a 8 card x 4 card grid, for a total board size of 64 cards.

Each setup is done in secret, so players must take turns to set up their side and then cover it while the other player does so.

Since every game the "board" is set up differently, no two games are ever the same!

Next, each player arranges his 10 character units on his home side as he sees fit, with the King starting on the Fortress.

Players then flip for first to act and play commences with players moving their character units across the board in order to capture their opponent's units and eventually capture his King. We have included a "gold" coin (1"x1" solid brass) with a Dragon on one side and a Crown on the other you can use to flip.

Add $10 to your pledge ($17 for the double game tiers) and we will include a pair of Dragons, 3D printed with black ABS plastice and measuring at 2" wide x 2.5" tall, that you can use to hold a screen between Home sides. We are using a piece of poster board 21" wide x 9" tall. This prevents one player from having to leave the room as the other player sets up, and also creates an additional way to "play" for who strikes first: the FIRST player who successfully sets up their side is the FIRST to act.  Who can strategically set up the fastest?

The three really awesome things about Battlemind that make it a challenging strategy game and really fun at the same time are:

  • Character movement/attack patterns
  • Character advantages/disadvantages
  • Terrain differences

To give you a leg up on your opponents, you will have access to a digital strategy guide that will help you through strategic setup and play for your terrain and unit cards.

Each character has certain attributes that govern where it can move and which units it can attack. The Trebuchet, for instance, is a long range weapon and can attack 3 spaces in any direction.  However, it must shoot full range, meaning it can't attack 1 or 2 spaces away.

In the following setup, the Trebuchet would be able to successfully capture the Heavy Horse, but not the Spearmen.  Additionally, if there was a Dragon roosting on the Mountain, the Trebuchet could capture it, as range weapons can capture Dragons while they roost on Mountains.

Most characters have special characteristics which create advantages/or disadvantages for them based on other characters or terrain.  Here are some examples:

  • The Spearmen may not be captured by calvary units (Light Horse/Heavy Horse).  This makes it a great unit to use defensively.
  • The Dragon may only be captured by range units (Trebuchet/Catapult/Crossbowmen).
  • The Elephant (6) may capture the Trebuchet (8) (Units usually can only capture other units one strength level above them).

Each type of terrain can benefit or hinder the game units. Here are some examples:

  • Forests slow down calvary units and can hide units from Dragons. Catapults and Trebuchets can't attack from Forests.
  • The Fortress protects any unit inside from being captured but is ruined once it's attacked.
  • If a units ends its turn on Wetland, it may not move the next turn.

Place your terrain carefully! It is often the difference between victory and defeat!  In the following setup, the Dragon may not capture, the Catapult, because it is hiding in a Forest.  However, the Catapult also may not attack the Dragon, because it may not attack from Forests!

One of the great things about this deck is you can make the game your own! To assist with that, we included the following EXTRA cards for alternate play:

  • (2) Red Priestess cards (extra character)
  • (4) Hill cards (extra terrain)
  • (24) Grassland cards (extra terrain)

The Red Priestess is meant to switch places with the Spearmen.  Her advantage is magic (adds +1 to a character's strength for 4 rounds but on the 5th round it is sacrificed!). This adds another strategic element to the game.

The Hill terrain piece can be used in addition to your other terrain cards.  When a range unit is placed on a Hill, its range is increased by 1 space.

STRETCH GOAL REACHED!  New alternate "Township" terrain card will be included in the deck! (one for each player). The Township will most likely allow only melee units to enter and either they may not be attacked there by other melee units (only siege engines) or they will receive a defensive bonus there!  (This will not be included in strategy guide).

Want less complexity? Switch out some or all of your Mountain, Forest, and Wetland Tiles for Grassland.  This will take the terrain element out of the game (which is a large part of the game) and allow you to battle it out on an open field.  (It also makes the game move more quickly).

You can also play the game with predetermined terrain setups. This adds another interesting element to game play and takes away the advantage of players being able to set up their terrain to their advantage.  Here's one idea, but the possibilities are endless:

We're offering a ton of cool art during this campaign, so don't miss out on the opportunity to get something one-of-a-kind.  These prints are Kickstarter exclusives and will not be available later.  Here's what we're offering...

You can also get the original lineart for Roxane's Red Priestess and Michael's Heavy Horse.  Those are obviously limited to first come first served!

You can also have our illustrator, Jacob Haynes, create a custom character in the style of the game based on a picture of you.  We'll deliver this as an 8x10" print as well as digitally with a grant of rights so you can post it online, use it for a profile picture, etc.

  • January 15th - Campaign Ends
  • January 16th - Start work on custom art reward tiers
  • February 1st - Money received from Kickstarter
  • February 1st - Place orders for game, rulebook, mats, and shipping supplies.
  • Late February - Begin shipping rewards!

Your deck comes lovingly packed in this awesome, custom-designed box.

Battlemind is best played when the terrain cards are placed on a non-slip surface so they don't slide around.  We suggest using a rubber shelf liner cut to 20" wide x 28" long if you want to make your own.

We are also offering a mat during this campaign as an add-on reward tier. For any tier at the $25 level or above, simply increase your tier pledge amount by $10.  This covers the cost of the mat ($5) as well as the box it's shipped in ($2) and extra shipping ($3).  In the case of the reward level with two games (GOOD DEED), you will add $18 for two mats.  This covers the $14 for the two mats ($10) and boxes ($4) as well as an additional $4 in shipping costs.

  •  The deck contains 115 cards, hand drawn and beautifully illustrated
  • You're a fan of card/tabletop games, medieval themed games, or strategy games.
  • You're a fan of "A song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin or HBO's Game of Thrones.
  • You're a fan of hard work/entrepreneurship and you like helping others meet their goals.
  • Because you've got $25 to spare for an awesome game!

Risks and challenges

All of the art for the game and the prints has been created. We have a manufacturer with over 30 years in the industry lined up to produce the cards and boxes for us. Unless real fire-breathing dragons appear and toast us to a crisp, you're getting your game on time!

The game is set to deliver in April of 2016, but we honestly believe we can get it to a majority (or all) of our backers by March of 2016. We are under promising and hoping to over deliver!
