To Whom It May Concern...
“Who Is The Accidental Nudist?
Ever since I was a young and impressionable boy, I have pursued my fascination with rendering the female nude. My name is Robbin Michael Wagner and I was born in the dead of winter in 1954 in Flint, Michigan. By the time I reached nine years old I was photographing erotica. I know now what I didn’t know then; I was not alone. Photographs of my slumbering sisters were my first subject matter. I began my life of alchemy by hand dipping negative film though Kodak D-76 developer in old porcelain ice cube trays in the potato cellar in total darkness.
My wonderment of darkroom magic began by making contact prints using a 100 watt bare light bulb hanging from the cellar ceiling. I printed on an old contact negative frame printer. My mother’s fish net stockings with hand sewn seams that ran down the backs of her legs were my early favorite subjects.
Each evening as she walked down the stairs to prepare for work as a restaurant hostess, I chronicled those fish net stockings. The venerable cellar stairs were rustic and open. I secretly photographed her through the stairs with an old pop-down bellows camera with a silent leaf shutter that I purchased at a flea market for .25 cents. I used Kodak 620 Veripan black and white film that was given to me by 1953 Pulitzer Prize winner, Bill Gallagher. He photographed Adlai E. Stevenson with a hole in the sole of his shoe in 1952 during his campaign.
To this very day my mother has never seen my early photographs. The negatives along with all of my early work of my first thirty years of photography were shredded many years later with malicious indifference by a tragic stricken angry critic.
Since the beginning of written history humans have been enraptured with nude members of their own species! I believe primordial depictions of early naked humans was the beginning of human anarchy. While leading lives of quiet desperation the planetary brethren secretly ask, “why are we here, where do we come from and where are we going?” In my mind, we are here on earth simply to experience pleasure every waking second.
When pleasure is not present, we seek it out. When there is a shortage of pleasure; war ensues. What, besides pleasure, are we here for? Each day while on Earth, I live to feed my obsession. My obsession? Creating timeless photographs of an occasional accidental nudist and sometimes sketching her in pen & ink, but always lauding her a ”fine art nude”. I find this activity and its by product, the images you see herein, immensely pleasurable.
A different tragedy regarding the loss of my work happened once again in August of 2005. I lost everything I treasured in New Orleans in Hurricane Katrina including the negatives I had made since the treachery that had befallen my negatives from the first thirty years of my life. This time it was a powerful woman who destroyed them. Mother Nature. She did so without personal cause. Last year, August, 2010, on the set of my short feature, "The Contemptuous Ruby", which was the fifth year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a casual acquaintance I had not seen since before the levy broke and destroyed my studio in the ByWater of New Orleans stopped by and presented me with my lost negatives from my French Quarter days. I was ecstatic and thrilled. I was overwhelmed with joy and tears but didn't allow myself to show it. So many of my friends lost more than the history of their work. They lost loved ones, homes and a way of life I have grown to love over the last 22 years here. But, I need to restore these negatives and digitize them, print some of them to include in this book. With your support, I would finally get to see my dream come true. To see my work published is affirmation and validation that my life meant something.
My goals are simple: I am seeking world wide distribution.
- As you can see in the video, I already have several leather bound press proofs of the book from the printer.
- If my goal of $17,500 is achieved with your help, I have been offered matching funds to print the first run of five thousand (5000) copies (printer's minimum) for distribution to the major book sellers. That first run will cost me $35,000 USD.
- My printer (I am precluded from naming them) already is distributed in Barnes & Noble and other book sellers around the world. Without their distribution expertise and belief in my life's work, it may have gone unnoticed forever. They provided the press proofs free of charge which is unheard in this industry.
- I'm not 21 anymore so time is of the essence in my life. :)

In this economy, the number one expense for me is to restore, clean and digitize the "lost" Hurricane Katrina negatives and then print them. The second biggest expense is to finish the last three chapters and being able to pay talent. Specifically, in New Orleans, many potential muses are sometimes living on the street. As I have only two arms and two legs, I could use some assistance on being able to pay a more generous remuneration than I currently can afford. It slows progress on finishing the book when, with the help of these much needed funds, I can finish the book forthwith. This provides immediate benefits for many people attached to the success of this book. You can only judge the success of society by the success of its women. Being able to remunerate muses via my loyal readership is thrilling; to say the least.
Yes; this book is crossing over into other areas of my creative life. Take a look at the short I just wrote, produced, directed and edited. Please note several printer press proof copies of "The Accidental Nudist" on the mantle. I used a Canon SD1100IS to shoot "The Contemptuous Ruby", my erotic noir short feature and that very camera also produced the images in "The Accidental Nudist". I am giving that camera to the first $5,000 Kickstarter donor. Please feel free to view it at http://www.imdb.com/video/wab/vi3453918489/ .
My next book, The Accidental Nudist At-Large, will be focused on fine art nudes of powerful women who make a difference in the literary, art, music, fashion and food world.
