About this project
A year ago I began a journey to finally make a CD. After ignoring the dream for so long, the pieces finally fell into place to the point that I had to say yes. I found an amazing producer named Daniel Barrett, owner of Rubicon Recording Studios and Artist Development in Austin, Texas. In his Rubicon Year program, Dan works on supporting every aspect of the artist who is ready to “cross the Rubicon” to a dedicated path of musicianship - mental, physical, emotional and technical.
It sounded like exactly what I was looking for, except I had a whole life in Iowa! Within a few months of deciding to take the plunge, I sold my car, rearranged our house to take on roommates, packed a couple suitcases and my guitar, and traveled to Austin by myself, while my husband stayed behind to hold down the fort in Iowa.
When I got to Austin, along with the rest of my work, Dan gave me the directive to “get to as many open mics as you can”. When I went to my first one I was afraid I might throw up, die or at least get booed off the stage. Since none of those things happened, I kept going, and I kept going, and I kept going, and by the end of the year I had made it to 157 open mics and showcases. This “learn by doing” method, where I just jumped in and started swimming, was foundational and transformational to my confidence, self-acceptance and professionalism as a musician.
Also during the year, Dan and I selected five songs to polish, rehearse, and record for a five song EP. After so many months of intense pre-production, the recording process was pretty much a breeze, not to mention incredibly fun! A talented mufti-instrumentalist himself, Dan also brought in some amazing musicians to fill out the sound - Rick Richards on Drums (Dixie Chicks, Mary Gauthier), Red Young on Piano and Hammond Organ (Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt), and Warren Hood on Fiddle (The Waybacks).
I am calling this album Anchor. The title track speaks of leaving behind everything I know to follow a calling, and “throw my anchor down” to “claim a brave new world”, and this album represents an anchor into my music, my artistic self. It also ended up with a watery theme - from Anchor, Jonah’s Whale, Shoreline of Alaska, Rain Song, plus Keep Telling Me.
I’ve done the work, I have the recordings, local Fairfield, Iowa artist Alicia Carradus created some beautiful artwork to use for the album cover, and the final step of this leg of my journey is to create actual CD’s. That’s where you come in. Creating a professional recording costs a lot of money, for example, costs include:
- hiring the musicians
- mixing and mastering the CD so it sounds just right
- paying the artists and designers
- manufacturing the discs
- a variety of legal fees
When you pre-order the CD through Kickstarter, that ensures I can cover those costs because I will know I've already sold enough CDs to do so!
Kickstarter gives me the chance to offer Anchor for pre-order along with a variety of other rewards. You can pledge at any level and many of the rewards have fun tie-ins to the songs on the EP, like raindrop earrings for Rain Song, and little hand-sewn whales for Jonah's Whale!
Please see the pledge levels and rewards on the side of this page, they range from a digital download for just $1, signed copies of the EP for $10, and on up to a song written just for you for $250, a house concert and more! With every pledge you also get my heartfelt gratitude for believing in me, in this dream, and these songs!
With Kickstarter, it’s all-or-nothing funding. When I reach my goal by the deadline, everyone’s pledges go through, I finish creating the rewards and send them out to you! If I don’t reach my goal, no one gets charged, I don’t get anything and I’ve got to come up with another way to make this happen. (Not to mention I need to find homes for a whole pod full of plushie whales!) Going over my goal would mean I could afford things like promotional materials and publicity to help the songs go even farther!
Every dollar counts, and just as important as pledges is spreading the word - on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, emails. Your word of mouth and your support IS the new music industry, so share the inspiration, make the dream a reality, help get a little bit more music out into the world!
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You for your support! You amaze and inspire me!
Yes please, that will really help my pledges to not get eaten by shipping costs! $5 should be enough for anything besides the book set, if you want that one we can talk about it to figure that out.
Message me! Let me know what it is you want and we'll work it out! Really the only things I can truly sell out on are the earrings from my recording strings, and the guitar picks I used at the open mics. Anything else I can do, make or get more of with enough time, so don't be afraid to ask!
