About this project
Why HealthyWatch from our founding Cardiologists
Matthew O. Jones, MD, FACC, FSCAI
G. Stuart Mendenhall, MD, FACC, FHRS
Do you or a loved one live alone and struggle to manage a chronic health condition? Typically we don't follow our care plan or take care of our bodies the way we should. HealthyWatch connects patients to caregivers in real time giving them the help they need.
HealthyWatch is a Health Hub
Every day you need to take medications, monitor your meals, and exercise. It's important to monitor your vital signs like weight blood pressure and heart rate. HealthyWatch helps the patient through each day, reminding them what to do and recording their activity and vital signs. We believe this is the best way to make real behavioral changes and take control of your own health.
HealthyWatch Connects Patients to Caregivers
Are you trying to care for someone who is far away? HealthyWatch can help.
It takes a village to care for someone who is chronically ill: doctors, relatives acting as caregivers, and the patient themselves. HealthyWatch helps connect all these vital members of the care team. Not only can daily health activity be tracked and shared with caregivers and doctors, but HealthyWatch will be able to send alerts if the patient hasn't taken a medication or recorded a meal.
If the patient is experiencing a problem and needs help, they will be able to alert their caregiver, friends or family by simply a long press on the HealthyWatch. You can see a prototype of this feature in the HealthyWatch Demo #2 video below.
Demonstration of Advanced Features
We are currently finishing up our Beta App and device firmware testing. We are ready to ship HealthyWatch to early backers so that we can learn how to make it better! We will be finishing the Android version in first quarter 2017.
HealthyWatch is the beginning of a Mobile Health Revolution: the ability to monitor and maintain your health anytime and anywhere. Two board-certified cardiologists had a vision for improving the cardiac care monitoring of their patients leveraging mobile technology:
Dr. Matt Jones graduated from Howard University and Morehouse School of Medicine and did his residency at Columbia University. He did fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He is currently in private cardiology practice in Brooklyn. He is an industry thought leader with cutting edge ideas in how to utilize technology to help patients and is a cofounder of GrekTek.
Dr. Stuart Mendenhall graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with degrees in Chemistry and Physics. He continued on to obtain his M.D. from the Harvard Medical School - MIT Health Science and Technology program, and completed medical residency at the Beth Israel Deaconess hospital in Boston, followed by cardiology and electrophysiology training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He currently is an attending physician at UPMC in Pittsburgh and active clinical and basic researcher, and is a cofounder of GrekTek.
We are building a platform intended to help consumers with health issues manage their health conditions on a daily basis. The product we are offering on Kickstarter provides many great basic features, but our real goal is to help patients and their physicians dramatically improve outcomes. You can see from our demo video that we have built the ability to record an EKG from the HealthyWatch. We are working towards FDA approval to use these capabilities beyond gathering information towards helping in predicting and detecting dangerous conditions.
The HealthyWatch products we are offering now have many of the building blocks needed to track a person's overall health, including steps, heart rate, medications, and the ability to accept inputs from convenient Bluetooth-compatible devices like a blood pressure cuff and scales. These capabilities offer great value beyond products already on the market, but they only scratch the surface of where we plan to take the HealthyWatch platform. We hope you buy one (or ten!) and join us on this journey toward a healthier future spurred by this new mobile revolution.
We Need Your Help
Building a solution to meet the diverse needs of the caregiver and patient market is tough. We need your feedback to help us build the best features and to create the most intuitive interfaces. We feel that most solutions are often designed without listening to the patients themselves. We think this is a mistake. We are looking for active beta testers to use HealthyWatch and to give us feedback: what works well and what doesn't work? how could the solution be better?
Why Build HealthyWatch?
Our president, Greg Eoyang, was thrust into the caregiver role in 2012 when he learned his wife had cancer and again in 2014 when she was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer. Frustrated with the lack of tools available to patients and caregivers, he began to design a mobile Health solution that could help. Along the way, he met Tom Klaff, our CEO, who also became a caregiver for his father who was diagnosed with dementia.
In May 2016, Tom and Greg joined with our two brilliant and visionary cardiologist founders highlighted above (Matt Jones, MD and G. Stuart Mendenhall, MD) who had been working on an effort to revolutionize daily care for their patients, and GrekTek was born.
We realized that being a patient with a chronic disease can feel degrading, lonely and depressing. We built HealthyWatch as a sustainable, positive, and hopefully fun way to take care of your daily health needs.

Risks and challenges
Usability by Real Patients
Simply stated, will it work for everyone? The HealthyWatch needs to work for a diverse customer base including those who may be chronically ill, may be older with poor eyesight, or lack technical savvy. We have tried to design the entire HealthyWatch System to be simple to use, but we realize that some patients are just not ready to adopt something new like this.
Beta Testing by Patients
We are running a Beta test program so that we can learn from those who want to use it. We will listen to our user feedback and make it easier to use, adding helpful features whenever we can. We have already started production of the 200 HealthyWatch (basic models) that we plan to ship before Christmas, but there can always be unexpected delays. We are also working on implementing some of the most advanced features and they may not be released entirely in the first beta stages. We ask testers to be patient, as we continue to refine our product to make it work for patients and caregivers alike.
Beta Test on Apple iPhone Only
During our Beta test period, we are releasing the HealthyWatch on the Apple iPhone only. We are building the HealthyWatch app on top of the WellConnected App, which already exists on the Android as well as the iPhone, so we know how long it will take to finish the Android version of the App. If you are an Android person, you'll have to wait until our production release in the first quarter of 2017. We will try our best to make it worth the wait.
FDA Class 2 Device
We feel it's important to explain that the ultimate goal for HealthyWatch will require FDA certification because we want it to actively predict when you may need a health intervention. We know that the HealthyWatch looks very similar to a Fitbit. This actually makes us happy because we like the way Fitbits look and so do our patients. However, HealthyWatch is not a fitness device at all, it's a lifestyle healthcare device that will combine elements from a wearable like a Fitbit with connections to the caregiver, doctor and a daily to do list to follow your care plan. Once we have secured our FDA certification we will be able to share all of the capabilities of the device that we are building now.
The FDA certification process is time consuming, costly and unpredictable and it may cost more and take longer than we expect. With your help, we will get there.
Most of us know the story of trying something new, a fitness tracker or new diet, with great initial promise, only to abandon the initiative a few months later. Sustaining behavior change is extremely difficult, even if the payoff is clearly a healthier life. We seek to incorporate HealthyWatch into the daily lives of patients, caregivers and doctors with the minimum amount of disruption while giving the maximum amount of value.
