Katika Nuru, Calling Me Home

In March 2012, Author Susannah Cord embarked upon what was to be the adventure of a lifetime - a dream vacation, a riding safari across the Kenyan savannah, about which she would write for online magazine, www.HorsesForLIFE.com . But what happened next exceeded all expectations.

A book is emerging, a remarkable book that has sparked a groundbreaking multi-media project detailing an adventure experienced against the backdrop of Kenya and her beauty and challenges. An adventure of body, heart, mind and spirit as the safari and Kenyan wilderness worked it's magic on a receptive soul. A book that asks the questions: Who and what are we really, have we forgotten, and what may we become when we remember once more? And what will become of us if we don't?

Now, to fulfill the vision sparked by these burgeoning writings, the author must return to Kenya with a professional photographer to gather the video footage and photos necessary for the completion of the Book, Interactive Online Book and Book DVD.

Katika Nuru, Calling Me Home

Onwards, we ride, and I think I can barely feel anymore privileged and blessed after the day so far when we dip suddenly into a long, undulating and meandering valley of bright jewel green, abundant with game sporting the slick sheen of good health. The zebra’s stripes seem somehow clearer, the Topi’s brown and purple flanks richer against their butter yellow legs and even the Wildebeest, hunchbacks, beards and all seem more attractive than usual. Perhaps it’s the emerald green, perhaps the sapphire sky, perhaps I am just seeing the world through new eyes.

This is Eden, I tell myself. We have unwittingly passed through some hidden passageway into the early dawn of man, we are riding through a forgotten time before history began and if this is not Eden, then this is where God has hidden the memory of it. I feel something holy come calling, my bones are singing their peculiar song again, my heart is stirring and searching for some answer in the evening breeze and I think it must be the call of home. It is the only word that comes close to describing this sensation that haunts me like an old, forgotten melody, teasing at the tip of my tongue and wavering like a mirage at the outskirts of my mind.

The Bigger Picture

Katika Nuru, Calling Me Home is a singular foray into the use of new technology to produce a book that will be published in print, but also in excerpts in the online magazine, Horses For LIFE. Furthermore, working on a book in this day and age means that we have the ability to create an interactive book complete with pictures, video and sound, and ultimately, a DVD.

The short term goal is a book telling an exciting and thoughtful story accompanied by  extraordinary photography to spark the imagination and the beginnings of an internal thought process, a wondering that while catalyzed by the writer’s own musings will be personal to each reader.

The long term goal is a range of products that invite you in for a groundbreaking experience, that while immersing your senses in Africa brings you along on an exciting, touching and often soul searching ride, while making observations about conservation efforts within Africa and around the world.

We are catching up now to the herds of zebra and antelope, and they race alongside us and to the right, while further ahead the front runners are arcing in a far-flung line that stretches in front of us and directly across our path, headed left at a flat out gallop of their own, kicking up dust that hangs in the air as the horns of the bounding impala glint in the sun.

The savannah is wide open and the game is scattered wide by our approach, and I am wondering do we go through their line but what kind of antics will that inspire in our mounts, when Tristan bears left on a soft curve and we are once more racing on an almost parallel path to the now disbanded wildlife. The giraffes are far off to the right on a tangent to our general direction. A dusty haze is rising but we are leaving it in its own proverbial dust as the game finally clears off right and left and we are cleared for take-off. We fan out on a straight line in the direction of our travel, west, and the horses are running freely but not as hard as they can, for nobody dares quite go there.

I hear nothing beyond the whistling wind in my ears and Libra’s steady breathing, pushed from his lungs by the pumping of his legs as the tears are squeezed from my eyes by the wind. He is young and strong and I borrow from him all the joy and freedom in running he will lend me. We are birds of a feather, and the wind sings in our name.

The Book and The Publisher

It starts as a story about Africa but it goes so much further than that. Katika Nuru – Swahili for Into the Light - is a multi-media publication about life, about Africa, about our coming of age, about what is happening now in the African Savannah - what is happening in our world. A story that is about all of us.

It is a project that is taking us outside our day to day scope, above and beyond the requirements of the daily running of Horses For LIFE Publications, and so although we are all contributing all we have and can, for we feel this must not go undone, we simply don’t have enough and it will not happen without support. This is where we invite you to come in and lend a hand that we may see this through to fruition, starting with an extraordinary book.

A book that will come alive not only in print with accompanying photography, but in the digital world with photography, film and audio. A book, interactive digital text and DVD that will feed all the senses and immerse the reader in a groundbreaking new reading experience.

A book about life, a life that can trace its origins to Africa. A book about where this life has been, gone and stands today. It is a multi-layered story that is about the love of nature, animals, horses, elephants, the great unknown that beckons to those with hearts to listen and the questions, big and small, that we face today around the world...it is a journey of inner and outer discovery that is about all of us, even as it touches upon the very real and desperate measures being taken to conserve life upon the African savannah, in particular the lives of the elephant, a magnificent creature that has been called a lynchpin of life on the savannah and indeed, acknowledged as one of the pillars of all life.

But a pillar that is in very real danger of toppling and crumbling to dust, once and for all time.

The author, Susannah Cord, approached us with an idea for a new series. Riding on horseback across the African savannah with the company, Offbeat Safaris. Susannah has been writing for Horses For LIFE since 2006 and her articles are always those that touch us the most, so we readily agreed. Then she sent Part 1. Huh? I gently cleared my throat as I asked her what the heck did she think she was doing?!

I don’t know how many times I had to ask before she realized that she may have thought she was writing a series of articles, but in reality she was writing this absolutely incredible book that now is inspiring and moving us towards and even bigger and more encompassing project.

Ultimately, it is an uplifting story about a very personal awakening that sheds light in dark places and upon difficult times.

But one that if it is to be completed means that the author has to go back. And so now, together with the author and Offbeat Safaris we embark upon an ambitious project, one that has taken on a life of its own as it keeps urging us on, calling us out and taking us ever further down this road of exploration and contemplation, beckoning us to take a closer look.

A look at what will it take? What will it take to remember who, what and why we are? And in the process discovering - what will it mean for our planet when we do?

Every so often there comes a book that has the ability to change things, the way we look at things. This is such a book.

Become an integral part of the journey. Become a part of the process. Get updates, photos, previews, and your copy of a book that will touch you and your life in ways that you will not expect.Together we can make this book happen. But first, we need photos and videos that will meet the quality and size requirements of this expansive project. A book that we dedicate to all of you.

Warm Regards

The Story and the Author

It’s true – it took me awhile to understand and accept what I was really doing…I thought I was writing a few fun articles. I thought I was just having a grand time. I thought I was going back to a place that had been my home for three years as a child to have the experience I always wanted but never had – a horseback riding safari. I thought I’d be blown away, come home, write it all out in 10 neat pages and move on. Yippee skippee, what a time I had, now what’s for dinner?

What’s that saying? If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans?

Because a funny thing happened on my way to The Plan. Riding across the savannah, things changed. I changed. I was indeed blown away and I never quite came back, could not come back the way I had gone.

How can you remain the same when you have been welcomed into paradise only to hear the birds of paradise sing their melancholic swan song? Witnessed the joy and thrill of life and birth only to suffer the heartache of cruel and untimely death at the hands of greed and superstition, felt your heart open so wide it would split and felt a peace that left you breathless and utterly devoid of sorrow. When I was so full of questions and none of the old answers fit, how then, could I go home the way I had come? I was lost but I had been found, yet now the way forward was foggy at best.

So what does a writer do under such circumstances? She writes. And writes. And writes some more because writing is her only way through the labyrinth of inner evolution even as it is reflected in outer circumstances. Then she buries her head in the sand and pretends it’s business as usual and sends it to her editor/publisher thinking this will come back and go nowhere, but my, it feels good to write. Unless said editor/publisher will let her publish a yearlong series of very long articles. And what magazine does that?

And that is when the publisher skillfully herded me towards a major reality check, and I – after extensive prodding and tweaking – pulled my head out of the sand, opened my eyes and broadened my horizons. And what a view it is. I embrace it with all that I am and all that I have and I can’t wait to go even further, for it has already taken me places I never dreamed I was going.

And so here we are. And I am still writing and to match the words and our purpose we must capture more and better images and film. And there is only one way to do that. I go back, and I bring a photographer.

Burrowing in my blankets I lie wondering - if the whisper of a butterfly's wings in the rainforest in Brazil might ultimately determine the course of a tornado in Texas, what effect might the final fall of the largest land mammal in the world have on that world as we know it?

When the last wild elephant has come and gone the way of ignorance and indifference, when the last wild elephant stumbles to his knees in a blaze of dust and sunlight and bullets and succumbs to the axe of a poacher, what will there be left to dream - for any of us? What else will we lose in the tidal wave that will follow in his wake as the elephant leaves our world forever? When the savannah ceases to function as it has for millennia because the guardians of the grasslands lie rotting and crumbling and forgotten in the harsh glare of civilization’s advance, and the eco system begins to fail and the species fall like dominoes, hard upon one another, one harder than the one before, and the great, intricate web of what makes this planet tick from north to south, east to west begins to falter and the blows fall hard and fast, what then? It will be too late for all but regrets. And they will stick in our throats with all the bitterness of gall.

When we pay the piper at the gate and show our children the sad chained remains of a keystone of the irreparably fractured ecology we leave them as our last will and testament, what will we say?

Will we weave tales of how the majestic elephant once roamed the earth and led mankind out of his cradle into a brave new world? Will we paint them a castle in the sky where the elephant sings his rumbling song to his tribes near and far, only to see it shatter to the sound of the disbelief in the laughter of our children as they tug on our hand in the direction of the ice cream cart? Tell them fairytales of elephants that travel miles to honor their dead, only to see eyes glazing over in boredom as they stare at the moth eaten, stuffed animal behind the glass, a relic of a not so distant past.

What will we say when the elephant becomes just another tale of Once Upon a Time in Africa? Nothing. We will say nothing. There will be nothing to say and all will be done. On our watch.

Horses For LIFE and Susannah Cord would like to thank Offbeat Safaris for their generosity and continued participation – without their cooperation this is a dream that would have remained just that.

The Safari Company – Offbeat Safaris

The company that offers the safari that seeded and nurtured the dream and generously continues to support this project is Offbeat Safaris, situated in Kenya. Offbeat Safaris is deeply involved with both conservation and community efforts, and as such contribute to and support projects in the areas in which they run their safaris.

From supporting local schools and parks, educating and employing locals, protecting wildlife destinations against land grabbers to building in an eco-friendly manner using only locally available resources, Offbeat constantly seeks and initiates innovative ways of reducing their impact on the environment while improving local economies and living standards. Rain and river water is used whenever possible, waste materials are recycled, locals are trained to work in their camps and on their farms, and their hay, produce and meat are largely home grown wherever possible.

Where necessary, Offbeat funds anti-poaching and forest protection units, as well as staff for general wildlife protection. Offbeat Safaris are members of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum which holds as its objective the conservation of Laikipia’s ecosystem, as well as the Mpala Research Station’s Wild Dog project. Firewood is provided to locals free of charge, and environmental awareness is taught at local schools where Offbeat Safaris have funded the purchase of everything from buildings to toilets to desks and books and stationary.

Offbeat Safaris are corporate members of the East African Wildlife Society, and in the Maasai Mara, owner/operator Tristan Voorspuy and partner Piers Winkworth helped found the Mara North Conservancy which protects some 70, 000 acres, abundant wildlife and a large Maasai community who are now considered landlords and compensated as such.

Offbeat Safaris also supports the African Medical Research Foundation, an organization intent upon bringing health care and related education to those who need it most.
