About

What Is Triathlonbox?

Triathlonbox, is a new innovative, British way to reduce stress on the day of your triathlon competition. It features a frame mounted transportation solution to reduce the stress on a triathlete in the build up to their A race. Through the sleek design and compartmentalisation, everything you need is with you and in the right place in the build up to entry into the water & through out the race.

Triathlonbox is planning to develop from one initial product to a small specific range of bike-mounted products for use in triathlon, duathlon and other cycle sports.

Triathlon is a sport that is growing rapidly in the UK at a rate of 5% per annum or 7,000 new people a year. In America the growth rate is 7% per annum or 12,600 new people a year. Triathlon is a race that starts with a swim, then moves onto a bike and finishes with a run. The distances vary depending on the event, this all started to evolve in the early 1970’s. Initially the product will be aimed at individuals who participate in triathlons within the UK and a small number of European buyers due to the cost of distribution.

From leaving your home, through to entry into the water and post-race recovery, Triathlonbox is there to help you to be at your best on race day.

More About Triathlonbox

The USP of the product is that Triathlonbox is a high volume box that enables a triathlete to carry all of their equipment in one go and on their own. It is mounted on the bike frame and is very stable and manoeuvrable. The product has been tested on a range of bikes from small ladies’ bikes through to larger time trial bike frames. Triathlonbox is designed at the front to accommodate both older bikes and newer bikes with cable routing. The weight of your kit is distributed through the saddle and the frame so as you go to and from transition you can start to focus on your race.

The large central section has ample room for all your race day essentials from the biggest bike helmet to pairs of trainers and cycling shoes. It can also accommodate some of the smaller track pumps. Water bottle holders can be accessed at all times, the top mounted pockets are for smaller items located at the top of the box.

Triathlonbox is perfect for off-season kit storage, enabling all kit to be stored in one place, bike-mounted between events, training sessions and during the winter months.

The Evolution of Triathlonbox

We have spent years designing and building Triathlonbox, with countless boxes being constructed and then deconstructed in our garage, to see what needed to be changed and improved. We have then remodelled them to be as user friendly as possible, getting advice from active triathletes during the numerous designs and the rebuilding stages. We needed to ascertain how it could be improved to give the race day triathlete the biggest marginal gain before the race even starts.

The evolution of Triathlonbox, from drain pipes and plastic boxes, through to more detailed cardboard designs - through to a full working prototype
The evolution of Triathlonbox, from drain pipes and plastic boxes, through to more detailed cardboard designs - through to a full working prototype

For about eight moths, I spent every night in the garage with my boxes, my Dremel & my glue gun, drilling and cutting boxes and sticking in bits of drain pipe to test the idea that I have had in my head for years. On the odd sunny day through the winter months, I would reappear like a bear coming out of hibernation, to test the product in the garden to destruction. Running through mock transitions, loading the car, unloading the box to test it in different situations that it will be used in triathlon. I’ve gone through about 5 or 7 plastic boxes, all of which were recycled, to get to the stage that I could go to a Yorkshire designer to get to the next level.

The journey really then started to gather pace. I sat down with the soon to be Mrs Triathlonbox to talk through the finances of the project and set dual budgets so that she would manage the wedding finances and I would manage the Triathlonbox budget. On occasion I have had to dip into the wedding budget to aid cash flow – but it has all gone back in, (that bits for the parents'). With the designers on board I went to the London business show and the Leeds Business week where I met the most valuable contact to date.

Tony from another small Yorkshire start up www.OrangePunch.co.uk has been instrumental to the success of Triathlonbox. His positive attitude to the design of the website, flyers, business cards, Kickstarter project, the list goes on, has been an amazing lift. I think we have both driven each other to be better at what we are both trying to achieve, which with a small start-up business is key. There is no time for negativity, realism, yes, to keep you grounded when starting a new project. Be open and listen to your customers, then try to readjust your product or idea taking on board what they have said.

So after eight months of hard work of juggling the products design & build with Triathlonbox promotion and a full time job Triathlonbox was born – unfortunately some of the components had to come from off shore which was upsetting to me as the first line of my business plan is “Develop a British triathlon product” but price dictated that it had to be done that way at this stage. Triathlonbox was born in Horsforth, in Leeds weighting in at 7kg and was gently taken home and put in its box in a nice warm part of the house, I even put a seat belt on it.

So we had the prototype, we had a patent application in place, now we needed to get to some customers to find out what they thought. I had booked a pitch at the bike and triathlon show in Manchester to see what people thought. As we drove across the M62 at 0530 on a Saturday morning there was near silence in the car as neither of knew what would come next – we were both very nervous, which I think initially showed. We set up, chatted to some of the contacts that I had made through social media, that I knew were going to be at the show (Alison, another small business from Yorkshire – Broadie skin care (www.brodieskincare.co.uk) was amazingly helpful in the run up). We settled in and waited for the 6,500 people to come and see my 'baby'.

The show started slowly as we found our feet and as the positive comments started to roll in we both started to grow with confidence. Could we be onto something here, we thought in the short lulls between crowds of people gathering to see me lift Triathlonbox on and off the bike. After over 700 lifts, 200 email address, 1500 flyers given out and me nearly buying an inflatable Jacuzzi while having a wee. We drove back to Leeds both shell shocked and utterly destroyed physically from the experience.

Monday came round and we both went to back to work. Before we set off on the Saturday morning we had a chat to guess what the website traffic would be like Kat guessed 350 over the weekend, I thought that was a little high but we were both miles out as we had 350 in one day of the weekend and since then the traffic has been surprisingly high. With a 25% returning customer rate – so people keep visiting the site to see if it is available yet. With web hits from Alaska through to South Africa all the way around the world to New Zealand. The level of interest has been amazing.

Production and Fulfilment

So the next step, we are currently working hard to get Triathlonbox to market so that I can afford to train to be in team GB as an age grouper and Kat and I can start a family after we get married in August. We need to try to get some funding so that we can buy the required tooling, we will be working hard with our designer Trig creative (another Yorkshire company) to get the price down to hit the market at our target price point of under £100 delivered anywhere in the UK. As to me there is nothing more annoying than going through checkout on-line and adding a sneaky delivery charge right at the last minute.

To get the product to market at the target price of under £100 once the Kickstarter project is complete. We may have to limit the internal “extras” such as the wet dry lids, the water bottle holder and the lockable section, but once the final prices have been established for these items then we can make a call on how we bring the box to market.

At this stage though the aim is to raise a much money as possible and to get the reassurance from the market that people will want this product. That is why the reward price for a box is higher than expected but when we come to market the price you are currently paying will be less than it would be to buy all the constituent parts. For example when you buy through Kickstarter you will get the wet / dry lid / 2 water bottle holders / top mounted pockets / lockable section. When we get to market at under £100 all being well you may only get one water bottle holder in the basic cost. I am taking guidance from our design team on this as they have the experience and tell me this is common market practice.

Thank you!

A huge thank you for taking the time to read, watch and hopefully comment on Triathlonbox a new innovative British triathlon product. We have spent a great deal of time and money from our wages and invested it in this product which we feel is a good idea. If you do feel that buying one of the rewards is for you please be assured that with a tight adopted Yorkshire man and a Scouser working on this project your money will be used as efficiently (my favourite word) as possible to get this product to market.

Risks and challenges

There is going to be the chance that a minority of bikes are not going to be suitable for Triathlonbox, but I will keep an up to date list on the website of bikes and sizes that I know the product won't fit.

There is also a number of risks on the time line for production of Triathlonbox, what with both having full time jobs there are risks that new work projects could slow down the time line, 'we are' trying to work the distribution of the products around the holidays Kat has. As a teacher I know she needs a break but we can work together to package all the items then she can wait in for them to be collected.

We have decided to have our honeymoon post Triathlonbox production & shipping so this is a fluid event that will not have any impact on the shipping of Triathlonbox to customers.

In the initial production run we are going to do one colour which is going to be decided by the majority of people on Kickstarter so there is a risk that you personally don’t like the initial production run colour. Rest assured that the quality will still be there. If you invest you get the chance to voice your opinion through a survey that I will do post project via email.

We are still working on minor improvements so the final internals maybe a little different to those photographed but as we have come this far we feel that we need to make a few minor changes which will give you the customer a much stronger product.

The worldwide delivery cost for the product is very high due to the size and weight of the product so please be aware that is British product shipped from Leeds in the UK so there are additional shipping costs as below if you are buying the Triathlonbox reward from outside of the UK. Really sorry that this is so high but I cannot find anyone cheaper to ship them worldwide at this point – we are in talks with production companies in America and Australasia about producing in other countries to aid distribution in the future – but let’s walk before we can run, swim and bike (but not in that order).
