Hello everyone! Sven is a bear. He is awesome. He likes to imaginate, adventurate, and eat sammiches. I have been drawing Sven for nearly a decade, and he has evolved from simple sketches to full on comic books, with lots of posters, prints, pinups and cartoon strips in between. He's become like a member of our family now (yes, he's a real stuffed bear) and I'm coming to Kickstarter to bring you the third of his standalone comics: The Climb.
The Climb features Sven as a... well... a climber... who uh... climbs a mountain... I'm trying to be spoiler free here but let's just say he faces something evil once he gets to the top and has to use his skills and his wits to survive! It isn't necessary to have read the first Sven books before reading The Climb, but I've made sure that all of the Sven books I've created are available within certain reward levels. There's something for everyone. Speaking of which...
A side-effect I've noticed with Sven that I never anticipated was that a lot of kids like colouring... I know, right?!? Weird!!! I've been told that some kids had taken to coloring the concept art pages in my first book 'AdSventures Volume 1...' so after being pressured by some Moms, I've decided to put together a larger sized Sven Colouring Book to add to some of the reward levels. This will be full of Sven drawings from previous AdSventures as well as black and white concept work for little ones to scribble on. The page count hasn't been determined, but I'm shooting to pick out at least enough stuff to fill 20-30 pages.
I think back to when we exhibited at FanExpo in Toronto when a Mother with her young son stopped by our booth... she turned to him while they watched me draw sketches of Sven to sell for whatever money people wanted to pay, and said, "So many of the people who have booths here are selling copies of stuff other people created, but look at this, he's drawing it right now, and you can own it right now! It's something being created right in front of you, and there's value in that!" She actually said a lot more than that, but you get the idea. I also spoke to Elementary School teachers and they all think Sven would be awesome for school libraries, and that makes my heart smile. I'll never forget stuff like that, and that was one of many interactions we had that day with people who just loved the idea of this fun little bear doin' his thing.
This is what I want to share with you guys: simple, cute, fun stories full of color, wonder and excitement. The three comics range from 16 to 24 pages or so and are perfect for little ones to get through in one sitting. Having a colouring book to scribble on after reading the comics is a great activity. AdSventures Volume 1, which is included with certain levels, is a 40-ish page booklet that introduces Sven and shows a lot more art of the evolution of the character and his world.
Beneath all this text there are lots of pictures showing examples of what you'll be getting with each reward level, as well as a breakdown of each reward level to make it a little easier. Please check it all out to see what's right for you.
Thanks so much for your support, I will be drawing this bear for as long as I can, and having people join him on his adventures is icing on the cake.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: For the final level, the images above have the correct information in it, but when you actually go to the rewards to choose one, it lists in the final level that you get the Climb original art. This is not accurate,as the art for the print is now sold out. This was a mistake made when I was using the "copy reward" function on the site and I overlooked it. I apologize for any inconvenience. Of the two people who selected that level, one of them has claim on the print art and the other has claim on an original page from the comic itself.
UPDATE #1: Stretch Goal #1
Thanks so much to the backers so far for putting us over our initial goal. If the campaign makes it to $500 I have decided to add two more prints to every physical order (not counting the $5 email level.) The first of these prints was a big hit at FanExpo, and the second is a brand new one! I've reworked them to fit aesthetic of the previous prints already offered in this campaign (all of the prints are 8.5 inches by 5.5 inches.) Here is a preview:
Update: $750 Stretch Goal Reached:
Physical orders will now receive FOUR random mini-print character cards. I created nine different designs for this goal.
Update: $1000 Stretch Goal Reached
We have hit $1000.... see the sticker designs above. I'm doing my best to keep the rewards flat, so shipping doesn't suddenly become an issue. The next Stretch Goal will be $1500, so let's see how it goes! Thanks for all the support, guys, this is really great.
UPDATE: $1500!!! Thanks to one of my best friends in the world, Perry Burke, we have crossed $1500!!! Because we made it this far, all physical orders will receive an additional original drawing. Back in October, when my computer was kaput, I drew dozens of Sven as different pop culture characters, many of which I used to make coloured trading cards for one of the other stretch rewards... but this time, all physical orders will get one of these drawings! I would let people request certain ones, but it would be a very large headache, so consider it a little bonus surprise! Thanks so much to the backers so far, I can't wait to start getting all these packages together!
Risks and challenges
There really aren't any risks here... the reward levels are set up to cover the cost of printing, packaging and shipping about 50 copies of the comic, with a little bit left over for incendentals. All of the actual comic work and design for the prints are all complete already. The only thing to do after the end of the campaign are the Sven sketches, and that's easy peasy! If the campaign goes over the goal I've set, I've got ideas for some Stretch Goals that will benefit all the hard copy levels. I'm not doing this campaign to make money or anything, but it would be cool to see the goal shattered and lying in our dust.
The July 2015 delivery date is precautionary in case there are issues with the planning, but I anticipate that once the campaign is over, providing that it's successful, you can expect your rewards much sooner. :)
Ultimately, this campaign is meant to bring awareness to the character as well as to give another opportunity for people to own the other two comics. Also, having exclusive work made specifically for it is always a plus. I hope the levels offered vary enough so that you can find what's right for you. If not, feel free to let me know and we'll work something out.
It would be great to have a successful campaign that will allow have enough profit for me to print a whole bunch of copies to bring around to local comic stores, especially ones with an independent twist like The Beguiling, Little Island Comics, and the Silver Snail. The Climb will most certainly have a small print run, no matter what, this Kickstarter would just help to make that print run much bigger and help me to spread the word a lot easier.
