Sandbox Demo Now Available!

Posted by White Lotus Interactive (Creator)

Hello everyone!

The time has come to release our Sandbox Tech Demo!

We’ve worked long and hard over the past few weeks to fulfill our supporters’ requests for a playable build (all-nighters included). In order to get this out in a timely fashion, we ended up having to make some sacrifices regarding the stability of the build.

We knew how much you guys wanted to play our demo, and we went a little overboard in a sense that we built the house without the “kitchen sink”.

So here’s the catch: the demo will open and run perfectly 90% of the time, so if you open it and it works, then great! The other 10% of the time is our “kitchen sink”, which will cause the demo to simply crash upon opening.

It is not uncommon for the demo to crash on the first try, and you may have to open it once or twice more to get it to run. Once it is running, it should work nicely. If it does not work at all after that, please let us know though our online survey; we are always looking for more feedback to help us improve the overall quality our gamers’ experiences.

We realize this is not ideal, and certainly won’t happen in the final game, but at least the demo is now out for everyone to play as promised. An unstable build is not uncommon, and again we’d like to apologize in advance for any frustration this little snag may cause.

Thanks again for everyone's support!

@Mary: Hello! In order to pick things up, center your screen over the object until the little + appears. Then left click and hold to pick it up. If you let go of the left-click, your "grip" is essentially broken. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions :) - Koriel

    2. Mary Harden Rudisill on

I hope y'all are still monitoring these comments. Somebody before asked how do you pick something up and the answer was move the mouse until you get the cursor over the object. Well, I have the cursor over the object (with the x in the middle). I have hit ever key on the keyboard and clicked the mouse buttons but nothing ever happens. Thanks in advance for any help. By the way, game is really nice looking. I like the music too.

    3. White Lotus Interactive Creator on

@John Stewart: Thanks for helping us answer questions!

@ricklee64: There are a few more mechanics that you can employ if you are interested in exploring. We set up 4 different island zones for you to test out, as well as a small exploration puzzle to finish it up :)

@Jason: Thanks for the review. Yes, we noticed the sounds problem too, but it was too late to go back and fix it - so it just sits there as a bug :/ Fun Fact: We put this sandbox demo together in about a week ><

@dgagnon99: To get full screen press "~", then type "setres 1920x1080", and hit "enter". To get out of this console mode (the thing at the bottom where you typed), hit "~" again.

I got the game to play on my third try. Find out that It did not like have the Steam client running at the same time. I also don't remember how to get a full screen view of the game (windowed is nice, but kind of small on a 1920x1080 screen.

I was able to get it to run on the second try with Windows 7 64 bit. It is interesting. I was able not only to make it rain and snow but create a downpour by duplicating the spheres, that may be a bug though. I was also able to make it snow. The day and night effects are nice too. However, there may be a bug with the audio in the final puzzle. You might want to take a look at it. The sounds don't always play.

    6. Adventurik on

I'm running it on 32-bit Win7. It's very slow and choppy, but I have a Core 2 Duo @1.86GHz. I haven't checked the FPS yet. Just been looking around and not sure what to do. I've made it rain with the blue sphere and changed the time of day, but that's all. Any hints?

No go for me to (XP SP3) but due to the .NET dependency - even if the included installer could work offline, .NET 3.5 and 4 installers crash on my system. Even if they did work, I wouldn't want it present due to the amount of system bloat (specifically Registry data) it adds.
Which raises a question - why on earth use .NET Framework? It's OS-specific, version-specific (lacking forwards and backwards compatibility - so multiple versions need to be present) and causes problems for many users (an online search for .net install problem turns up plenty). A better option would surely be Mono which offers Mac/Linux portability and doesn't require the same system overheads on Windows systems. Better yet, its files can be included with Xing's (i.e. in the same program folder) making it less subject to system setup vagaries.
Sticking with .NET will mean some users not being able to run Xing - please reconsider this.

    8. ckroenicke on

@John Stewart: Thanks! Now I can complete the survey! :D

    9. John Stewart on

@ckroenicke: go to the console by hitting TAB or ~ and then type "stat FPS"

How to display the frame rate when playing the demo?

Mine is 32 bit as well. I wonder if that's the issue.

    12. Tore Mygland ~~Dream Traveller~~ $6.13 on

Installed all Windows updates on my XP after the new .Net installation. Still no honey. Fairly old system, though, Athlon 64 X2 4200+, ATI Radeon X1800, 4 GB RAM (3 accessible), 32-bit Win XP SP3.

    13. Asrai on

Not working for me in Vista. I can get it to run, but both the sound and picture only move ahead in short bursts every few seconds. Ah well, the stills that it shudders through are lovely. It definitely makes me eager to get my hands on the real game eventually. :)

    14. White Lotus Interactive Creator on

Hey everyone, sorry about any of the crashes. Also, we never tested it on XP, but it seems to work ok on some machines running XP (like Helena's).

We'll see what we can do about it in the future!
      Thanks for all the comments!

    15. Helena on

I'm playing on XP, and it works fine - framerate is a bit low, which is unsurprising given my computer specs, but no other problems. I've left a more detailed critique through the survey, but I agree with Strom about the camera being slightly too close to the ground.

Has anyone found anything else to do after working out the musical note sequence? I'm guessing that's the end of the demo, because I seem to have visited all the islands and seen all there is to see at that point.

    16. Tore Mygland ~~Dream Traveller~~ $6.13 on

It installs fine on my XP Sp3, but crashes from the splash screen. The error looks like it comes from the kernel, not the application, so I'm pretty sure XP is a no-go zone. Oh, well, hopefully I'll manage to hang on to the finished game till I have a PC capable of running it.:P

    17. StromIV on

It really was a good demo. Only thing I didn't like was when picking up stuff it seemed a little too close to the screen. And it felt like the camera was too close to the ground. Just what I felt, but it was really fun, and very nice looking. Can't wait for either a more stable demo at a later date, or the full version. That and the music.

    18. Anaxphone
      Superbacker
      on

Here's hoping. I really want to play this game, asit looks gorgeous and I like the concepts they're playing with...

At any rate, everyone else, please keep gushing over how great this is. I'm hoping to at least enjoy it vicariously through you.

    19. StromIV on

That is, if your demo crashes and you can't figure out how to relaunch it.

    20. StromIV on

And for those wondering how to relaunch the demo, this is what I did:
To launch the demo first go to the install folder, look in the Binaries Folder, then go to the Win32 folder. At the bottom look for the application UDK. There are 2 UDK files, you want the application one, not the DOS one.

    21. StromIV on

Ouch. That sucks. Guess it will run with the compatibility, just not install. Hopefully when they optimize it it will run for more then just Windows 7 and up.

    22. Anaxphone
      Superbacker
      on

@Strom- It didn't even finish installing before telling me there was an incompatibility error and quitting out.

    23. StromIV on

And I am running the game in XP Service Pack 3 compatibility. I have Windows 7 64 bit, but don't know if it might still run with XP or not.

    24. StromIV on

      @ Felix
Don't know if you figured it out, but if you center your screen on the item in question, a cursor will appear if you can pick up something. You can also center your screen on something and click your mouse (even if no cursor appears), and sometimes you will be able to interact with the surroundings.

    25. Anaxphone
      Superbacker
      on

I feel you, Tore. I'm still using XP so I won't be able to play this game any time soon either.

    26. StromIV on

For anyone downloading and wondering what the recommended requirements are, here is what is listed:
      RECOMMENDED

Operating System: Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit operating systems), Windows 8 (64bit operating systems)
Processor: Core 2 Quad Q6400 (2.13GHz) or faster
      Memory: 2 GB
      Hard Disk Space: 800 MB
      Video: GeForce 8800 or better
      DirectX: DirectX 9.0c or higher

NOTICE: The game is unoptimized. These system requirements are recommended, but not absolute.

    27. Tore Mygland ~~Dream Traveller~~ $6.13 on

So, no Win XP support. Not really a surprise, no. ;) Will just have to wait till I can afford that new laptop...

    28. Helena on

The file is 491 MB, and takes about an hour to download on my connection. I may just do some shopping in the meantime ;-) Then I just have to hope my rather ancient computer can run it.

how can i pick up thing?

    32. benjamin sweetnam on

so if they actually paid for there account with ripoff share as they are commonly known they only get 30gigs of upload and download download not including there own account if they used the free account its only 1 gig .So that's either two whole downloads or 60 not enough for a realease.
btw the torrent is working great I suggesting downloading via that there are quite a few seeds there now including me

    33. StromIV on

No problem. I have 8TB of roll-over bandwidth, so link it for downloads to as many places as you want.

Don't worry, it's all legal because we own it! ;)

Are you still in the process of creating new links for download?

      Malcolm Smith on

Guess I got the demo quickly enough before the bandwidth ran out on the first link. With a Q6600 and GTX 460, I'm seeing some frame rate dips to ~20 when running at 1920x1080. Normally it's closer to 30-45FPS though.
I really like the atmosphere of the sandbox level though, almost exactly like what you've captured in your videos. I also appreciate the gesture of releasing a sandbox demo during the Kickstarter period at all, that hasn't been true for the other games I've backed.
I'll be sure to test it out more tomorrow and fill out the survey. Thanks for the release and good work so far.
