Über dieses Projekt
Emoji Book is a project by Charlie & Danni to bring together artists & designers within one simple constraint - to interpret and illustrate an emoji of their choice.
With artists from all over the world contributing incredible artwork in a huge variety of mediums and styles, we have now collected over 150 emoji interpretations from over 20 countries.
We need your help to do justice to this collection of amazing illustrations and create a beautiful hardcover book worthy of the art inside.
So if you love emoji and want to see your favorite emoji come to life - support this project!
Emoji are everywhere. They have created a whole new style of communication. For better or for worse (better), emoji are inescapable. In 2016 the MoMA in NYC introduced the original set of emoji to their collection. Drake has the prayer hands tattooed on his arm. You can order a slice of pizza by texting the pizza emoji. You can even purchase an emoji domain for your online presence.
One of the things that makes emoji awesome is how up for interpretation they are - which is what we chose to focus on for Emoji Book.
We both come from the creative industry and have always been aware of the huge amount of talented people surrounding us. We wanted to work on a project that brought these people together to create something amazing. But what? That's where our emoji obsession came in: What could be more fun than getting these super talented artists to interpret emojis? It was a winning formula: Awesome artists + emoji = magic.
Because this project is all about interpretation, it was very important that our contributing artists and designers knew that they had 100% creative control. They could use whatever medium and message they wanted, showcase their trademark style or explore a totally new one.
We felt that having the constraint of one emoji to focus on would be a fun challenge for the artists. It has been really cool to see the artists interpret both the popular but also the more obscure and random emojis.
We have been so blown away by the creativity, diversity and variety of mediums used by our contributors. You can check out all the art at emojibook.club/gallery, but here's a sample of just a few:
• Size 8x10"
• 350+ pages (1 spread per artist)
• Canvas spine
• Front cover deboss
• Printed in the United States by Edition One Books
We are Charlie and Danni - friends, colleagues and emoji fans living in New York. Charlie is an award-winning Canadian developer. You can usually find him here. He recently created this other emoji project. Danni is a designer from New Zealand. She likes to spend time in the mountains, and is slowly learning french at Coucou Brooklyn.
Our funding goal is for a print run of 800 books. Money raised goes directly into the cost of printing the books, shipping & fulfillment, and compensation for each of our artists from around the world.
Being designers ourselves, compensating creatives for their work was very important for us and has a been a huge motivation throughout the project. When we got started, we surveyed a portion of our artists to ask them if they preferred to be paid in cash, or in product, weighing out the pros and cons of each scenario for both parties. The response was unanimous: each of our ~150 artists will be receiving a free copy of Emoji Book. Shoutout to all our incredible contributors, we <3 you more than you know!
We are working with United States based printing company Edition One Books, and the renowned fulfillment company Blackbox (from the creators of Cards Against Humanity). We are so excited about these partnerships.
Any extra funding we intend to go directly back into the book, whether it be improving print quality, or accounting for any production/shipping mishaps. We would also love to be able to throw an awesome book launch for our local contributors to attend!
This has been a truly fun and rewarding project for us. We've spent countless hours, but we don't plan on using any funding to fill our pockets, we really just want to print this book!!

Risiken und Herausforderungen
We are accepting contributor requests throughout the campaign, meaning we won't know the total number of contributors and therefore book pages until the campaign closes. This could affect our projected printing and shipping costs, so we will be updating our partners throughout to manage these numbers.
We’re working with a world class fulfillment company called Blackbox (creators of Cards Against Humanity) to manage global logistics. Our timeline allows for delays and to ensure timely delivery. However, if we encounter an unexpected challenge and are running behind schedule, you will be the first to know.
