About this project
Imagine love is a little monster that follows you and your loved one everywhere you go. Imagine this creature's survival is tied to the way you treat each other. Every time you fight, the little monster gets sick; every time you treat each other with kindness and respect, the monster becomes stronger!
This is the dilemma faced by Alex and Hazel as they embark on a new relationship. Can they keep their Love Monster alive?
Goal Reached!!! Stretch Goals Announced!
You Backed, Shared, Loved ... And We Made It!
The funding for Principal Photography is successful!
Funding for principal photography means that we can now film the movie! But that's just the beginning! If we reach these important stretch goals, we can knock the ENTIRE BUDGET out right now!

The LOVE GOBLIN! Is there a force opposed to love? In the script we entertain this idea in the form of THE LOVE GOBLIN! We are excited to announce these new rewards in honor of reaching our goal!
These Goals are every bit as important as the original goal as they will allow us to fully tell the story of "Must Feed and Water"!
Stretch Goal #1 ($30K) - “Bring the Monster to Life” — In order to fully realize the Love Monster’s Story, we must bring in the movie wizards that will remove wires and puppeteers from each frame, as well as add small touches like blinks and snarls that will truly bring the Love Monster to life! An additional five thousand dollars will cover the cost of completing the Love Monster’s awakening!
Stretch Goal #2 ($35K) - “Geek Speak” — Interested in film making? Look up these common post production terms and you’ll find out why we need to reach this goal: Color Grading, ADR, Sound Design, Foley … There are many facets of post production that are just as vital as the actual filming of the movie! On a big budget movie, these things cost an astronomical amount of money so we will be calling in a lot of favors from fellow movie makers … But we’ll still have costs incurred. An additional five thousand dollars will help cover the costs of post-production!
Stretch Goal #3 ($40K) - “Monsters Among Us” — In the script, the Love Monster has a shadowy adversary that we hope to bring into the light. Call him the “Jealousy Monster” or the “Apathy Monster”. This is the creature that opposes the Love Monster and all that he stands for … Help us bring this monster out of the shadows in the form of a practical puppet. An additional five thousand dollars will cover the cost of construction for this powerful little foe!
Stretch Goal #4 ($50K) - “The Home Run” — If we reach this goal, we will be able to add ALL of the additional touches to the film … Including the construction of numerous Monster Puppets to be used for an additional scene currently not possible within the budget. This scene would add a “wow factor” to the film that we (as of now) can only dream of … We will also be able to not only submit to every reputable festival we can get our virtual hands on, but also travel to these festivals and hopefully meet some of our wonderful backers!
Thank you again to all of our backers and all of our friends and family that have given us so much love and support!
Our last short film, “Of Teaching Killer Whales Compassion” enjoyed a strong festival run, winning Best Narrative Short Film at the Garden State Film Festival, and garnishing an Honorable Mention at the world’s oldest, continuously held short film festival, The Rochester International Film Festival.
"Of Teaching Killer Whales Compassion" relates the story of a homeless man named Joseph, and his search for the love and acceptance we all require. We believe the film achieved its objectives, and are humbled by its reception and apparent affect that the story had on the people who graciously gave the time to view it.
WHY THIS FILM?
We knew that the next short film would need to show a progression; show that we are willing to take chances and tackle something beyond what we’ve already accomplished.
And it all starts with a story.
I decided that there was no better way to put my writing ability to the test than by tackling a universal subject:
The question was: How could I possibly contribute to a subject that has been dissected by countless generations? Could I possibly possess the audacity to throw my two cents into a bucket already filled thousands of times over?
I wanted to answer these questions with a unique take on the concept of love. And the answer ended up being the tale of a worthy little creature. The little monster that is love.
Not a love story, but rather, the story of love itself.
It is a story that I’m proud of, and should anyone desire to read a selection of it before backing this project, please send us a message.
The decision to make this script our next film was easy; however, the conversation about how to translate it to the screen proved much more complicated.
Raphe vacillated between CGI and animation as the most effective ways to realize this film, but once the notion of a practical puppet was presented, we were both hooked! We could use a puppet a la E.T., Gizmo, and Yoda! Tap into the magic of the 1980's creature puppet movies we grew up watching!
The script led us back to our roots … To movies like Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Crystal, Gremlins, and Labyrinth. Scenes with Yoda teaching Luke that you, “Do or do not, there is no try”. E.T. telling Elliot to, “Be good” before their heartbreaking goodbye.
We set out to make a movie about love and it led us back to the movies we love!
Suffice it to say, finding someone to make a creature puppet is a journey in and of itself. Luckily our search led us to Mark Villalobos of Monster FX.
Raphe and I met with Mark and pitched him the idea of what became affectionately known as The Love Monster. Mark took the concept and presented some sketches outlaying his take on what this fictional love monster would look like.
On first viewing of his wonderful sketches, I took out my checkbook and asked, “How much?”
We felt it was vital to have this monster built with personal funds to show that we are not just asking for backing without taking risks ourselves. I hope that by providing the script and showing that I am willing to risk my own money, others will get behind this project and help us bring it to completion.
Join us on this journey, and if everything goes as planned... If you allow us to show you a small bit of magic... You may decide to care for one of these little monsters yourself.
PLEASE SHARE THIS KICKSTARTER!
All contributions will go towards the completion of principal photography of the short film "Must Feed and Water".
Film making is an incredibly expensive venture. The costs of equipment rental, set construction, location permits, puppeteers, and compensation for our crew's dedicated hard work will add up very quickly. Don't forget there's also all the cost of the rewards and Kickstarter's fee to be deducted from the final amount raised.
We thank you for making this film a possibility, and hope you find a suitable reward for your belief and generosity.
WE ONLY RECEIVE THE FUNDS IF WE REACH OUR GOAL!

There is even an option to have one crafted in your (or someone you love's) likeness.
We are very excited to officially announce our cast members for the main roles of Alex and Hazel!
Their talent, professionalism, and passion for acting is inspiring and we know they will both help bring the story of our Love Monster to life.
Just for Fun - Working with Puppets!
The Love Monster doesn't speak in the movie. It is an observer who's fate is bound to the way his creators treat each other.
But that doesn't mean we couldn't have some fun while doing the camera test.
Please enjoy this video of our team having fun with the Love Monster!
Risks and challenges
There are many challenges to successfully completing any film, and when you add a practical puppet into the mix, those challenges are all magnified.
No longer is it just a scene on a couch or at a table. Now you have to specially construct everything in your environment to accommodate the equipment and people necessary to operate the puppet.
We are working with seasoned puppeteers and talented artists to guide us through the puppeteering process, and are extremely encouraged by their generous spirit and vast puppet wisdom.
Making a film takes far more than desire. It takes the skill and determination of a great many people. We have a team behind this project that believes in the concept just as much as we do.
They, just like us, are ready to pour their hearts and souls into bringing this little Love Monster's story to fruition.
There are always unforeseen challenges to completing principal photography; however, with your help we can get this film safely in the can!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
