My name is Marshall.
I'm recording my first project in five years, and I want to do it with your help.
Let me start by saying that I'm excited! Excited about recording a new collection of songs that I love, excited to work with my friends, fellow artists and songwriters, excited to pour myself into creating something meaningful, but more than that, I'm excited about the album's core concept:
The everyday kind. The kind we breathe in when we wake up. The kind that feels like warm sun on our faces, and smells like the first blossoms of spring. It's the grace we forget to pay attention to - if we're not careful, we'll miss it. To experience it, we have to live with our hearts and senses wide open - and that is something we should endeavor to do. It's a reminder that we are cared for - that there's a grand love story that's continually being written, and we live and move within it.
I'm recording this new project because this grace inspires me, and...
...I want this grace to inspire you.
A little story.
It's a grace story. I've always answered the question, "what do you do?" with "I'm a singer and a songwriter." Well, about six years ago, my creative well dried up, or I had writer's block, or - I'm sure there are a hundred different ways to describe it, and even more reasons why; but it happened. After a couple years, I dropped "songwriter" from my answer. It felt like saying goodbye for the last time.
Fast-forward to this past winter. My wife and I were at our church, and there was a video prior to the main speaker. The message of the video, it's main phrase, was "runners run." They get up in the morning, they put on their shoes, they warm up their muscles and stretch, and then they run. They do this because that's what runners do. They don't concern themselves with soreness, lack of sleep, or anything else - they run.
It hit me so quickly: "writers write!" They don't allow past failures to dictate who they are - they write. They pick up a pencil, sit down at a piano, and do the work of writing. That occupied my thoughts for the rest of that day and through the night. The next morning I sat down in front of my little office piano, grabbed some paper, and there was water in the well. Grace. Now, don't get me wrong - there's plenty of crumpled up paper in my trash can, and some boring melodies that have been abandoned. But I'm writing, because that's what writers do.
So, I'm making this record.
Folks, I love making music. Recording it is one of the most exciting, emotion-filled, tiring, scary, exacting, purposeful, life-giving things I've ever thrown myself into. It is an undertaking. It's an adventure. The search for the right songs - for the right musicians. There are many moving pieces. There are many moving people; moving for many hours, over many weeks and months. Strumming, banging, scribbling, twisting, singing, listening, and fashioning the music until at long last, reluctantly and fearfully, we all say, "we're finished," and send it out into the world.
This is where you come in.
I can't wait to share this music with you and with others, but I NEED YOU to help make it a reality. I've set the budget at $25,000 - the bare minimum amount to complete the project. I'm hoping that we will eclipse that number and far exceed it! There's so much music I'm waiting to record, and any extra pledges will allow me to increase the scope of the project! More money means more music!
To support the project, just select a Reward Tier. I've come up with some pretty cool rewards to make this interesting for everyone - please have a look --------------------------->
If giving to this project resonates with you, I encourage you to partner with me and choose one - a big one if you can. I believe in this!
YOU + ME = A VERY GOOD THING!
Risks and challenges
One last thing...
Folks, this is where I remind you that I am not in control of the universe - of this I am quite positive. I have seen many recording projects through to completion and well within target deadlines. I have a good track record and experience with this process - but again, I am not in control of the universe.
I feel very certain that the delivery dates included for the reward tiers are more than attainable. But if, by chance, my lack of universal control plays against our deadlines, you will be the first to know about it.
I'll be posting progress reports here on Kickstarter, so you'll always know where we are in the process.
