The Recon Survival Tool idea came to me when I was getting ready for a camping trip. I was loading my supplies and gear into a backpack. After loading a shovel, hatchet, saw, knives, machete, hammer, and fire starter the pack already weighed 20 pounds. And I still needed the rest of my gear. So I thought, someone should make a tool that incorporates all of the basic tools into one. Why not me!
The goal of this tool was to make it lightweight, strong, and provide as many functions as possible. So the Recon was born. After about a year of design, prototypes and trial and error, I felt like I had created the perfect tool.
The Recon can hammer, saw, cut, chop, cut brush, dig, has a hook for cutting vines, rope, sharpen spear points, and includes a fire starter and sheath. It is 17" long x 6" wide and only weighs 2 pounds. The design of the tool offers great balance and when used to chop, feels heavier than it is. It is a very efficient tool with no bounce or vibration.
Risks and challenges
A big hurdle that is behind me is the patent process. I do have a patent for the Recon and I already have a company in place to manufacture. They have manufactured and packaged a small shipment for us and consumers love the design, weight, function, finish, balance how sharp the edges are and the fact that in has a fire starter included.
The challenges so far have been getting to a 3000 - 5000 unit order for the cost to be inline with competitive pricing. We want to be in the $50-60 range or lower at retail. With the goal of $25,000 we will be able to solve this issue.
Packaging has been another concern. The tool is so sharp, that it will cut though the clamshell that was on the test units. We have designed a new package and with the 3K-5K unit order, the manufacturer will include the new dies and packaging costs.
Also, at first, distribution was a concern, but I have now secured a good working relationship with a wholesaler that loves the product and is onboard to submit finished samples to most of the major sporting goods retailers in the U.S. I have compete confidence that they can handle all fulfillment needs.
Just confirmed, we will have ready to ship inventory mid July!!
As long as we hit the $3000 goal, we will start shipping to everyone that pledged on Aug. 3.
Thank you to all that have supported this project. It really is an awesome tool.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
