About this project
About 30 years ago Masaaki Hatsumi made a series of colorful paintings. He made these paintings to instruct his students in the traditions of his dojo. Now Hatsumi Sensei has decided to share his art with the world so we are making a book, Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven.
Our book will combine professional design, photography, and craftsmanship to produce a quality art book which gives Sensei's paintings the spotlight they deserve. An essay and comments by the artist will help put the paintings in context and action photos shot at the dojo will illustrate the connection between the paintings and the artist's physical training. Our book is in Japanese with English translations and an appendix will provide supporting information. This book will be a great way to share Sensei's art with the world and the research and translations that go into making the book will help prepare us to show Sensei's art in museums and galleries internationally.
Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven comes in two editions: Collector and Standard. Both books include a page for artist signature. This signature page is attached to the book's inside front cover. The Standard signature page is blank. The Collector signature page incorporates a hand-made sheet of washi which is hand-stamped and numbered. Our Collector edition washi is thicker and suited to suibokuga paintings, it is provided by a washi maker recognised by UNESCO for their traditional Japanese paper making methods. The Collector edition is limited to 800 books.
You'll notice our books have a Swiss binding and a Smyth sewn book block which exposes the stitch on the spine. This Swiss binding allows the front cover to open completely so the signature page lays perfectly flat. And the Smyth sewn book block allows each page to open as fully and as flat as possible so the photos and Sensei's art can be viewed clearly.
Most of our layouts are finished and photography and color corrections are already done. Our book is expected to be 22 x 30 centimeters (about 8.6 x 11.8 inches) and 204 pages.
Would you like a traditional Japanese book box for your book? To get a book box, choose your reward and then add $23 to your pledge for each book box you'd like.
Our postcards are big. They're 5.5 x 9.5 inches (about 14 x 24 centimeters). All our postcards feature art or photos from Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven. The back of each postcard gives information about the featured painting or the artist. Would you like a set of 10 postcards? To get postcards, choose your reward and then add $14 to your pledge for each set of postcards you'd like.
Carefully packing our heavy books into sturdy, foam-lined cardboard boxes and then posting them worldwide is expensive ($50 per book). But we have a great shipping and handling discount for any order of three or more books (just $30 per book).
And if you add postcards to your book order (as an extra) this will save you the shipping fee (because we'll include your postcards with your book delivery). Please take advantage of these shipping and handling discounts. Best of all, our Early Birds include a free book box with every book. Get these Early Birds while you can!
Risks and challenges
Publishing a quality art book like Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven is complex. A platoon of professionals need to be chosen and coordinated, every detail of text and image requires consideration and approval, and it all has to be completed on schedule. We plan to have a few sample books done in time for Sensei's birthday in December. Other books will deliver in spring 2018 (I'll update on delivery date later).
Although there is much to do, our photography and color corrections are done and most of our layouts are finished. I've interviewed Hatsumi Sensei multiple times and we received his comments on the paintings and his introductory essay. And we completed two successful Kickstarter projects previously (Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Art and Masaaki Hatsumi: Art Prints). For Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven, we are working with our same designer again (Dan Saal, Thoughtfull Corporation). Dan and I are excited about this book and we're already talking about which design contests we want to win!
Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven important to Hatsumi Sensei. This book will be a record of his Dojo Giga painting collection. The book's transcriptions and translations and iconographic comments will help make Sensei's art more accessible and Sensei's comments will give the paintings context. For me, this work is a labor of love - I truly enjoy studying these paintings and finding ways to express their meaning through page layout and book design. I look forward to sharing this book with you.
