Freeport is one of the classic RPG city settings and we want to give it the deluxe treatment in a new 512 page sourcebook. Aaarrrrrr!

We want to make a 512-page full color hardback for our Freeport city setting. It will include new locations, new NPCs, new monsters, and new adventures, powered by cutting edge Pathfinder rules. Now that we've made two stretch goals, it will also come with a poster map of the city and feature a brand new Wayne Reynolds cover!

New to Freeport? Check out this PDF excerpt from The Pirate's Guide to Freeport that gives you an overview of the City of Adventure!

Note that while some of the PDF rewards are for older Freeport books that used the 3.5 d20 rules, Freeport: The City of Adventure, The Player's Guide to Freeport, and the Return to Freeport adventure series are all being done with Pathfinder rules.

The Quick Pitch

We've added a lot to this Kickstarter since it began, so here's a run down of what you get at the Freeport Pirate level ($100 or more). We think it's worth the ducats!

* You get a print and PDF copy of Freeport: The City of Adventure.

* You get all six parts of the Return to Freeport PDF adventure series as they release in 2014! This is all new material.

* You get a 28mm degenerate serpmentman miniature

* You get a PDF of the forthcoming Dark Deeds in Freeport adventure from our friends at Kobold Press.

* You get a book plate with art by John Kovalic of Dork Tower fame and signed by Freeport creator Chris Pramas.

* You get two paper ship model PDFs from Fat Dragon Games, the medieval cog and The Sea Dragon.

* You get PDFs of the Player's Guide to Freeport and the poster map of the city.

* You get PDFs of not only the Pirate's Guide to Freeport, but also ALL the rules companions: Castles & Crusades, FATE, Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, 3rd Era, and True20.

* You get PDFs of the Fiery Dragon Counter Collection Gold, Freeport Trilogy: 5-Year Anniversary Edition, Fiery Dragon's Summoned Monster Counter Collection, and Dark Wings Over Freeport.

* Lastly, if the project funds, we will make the Freeport rules content available to ALL Pathfinder users of Hero Lab for FREE.

Note that the rewards have changed since we began, so you'll find the most up to date descriptions of them below (we can't edit the ones to the right after launching the Kickstarter).

The Freeport Story

Avast ye, mates! I have a tale to tell. It's a story of pirates, thieves, merchants, sailors, swashbucklers, cultists, and the place they call home: Freeport: The City of Adventure!

At GenCon 2000 the Third Edition D&D Player’s Handbook debuted and launched the d20 era. On that day, WotC had no adventures or support material to sell, but thanks to a new-fangled thing called the Open Game License there was something else you could buy that day: a 32-page module called Death in Freeport from a young company called Green Ronin Publishing. We and Atlas Games were the only companies at GenCon to make the leap of faith required and see if D&D players would buy from third party publishers. And did they ever! Death in Freeport was huge hit, and two further modules followed quickly. That was the beginning of Freeport: The City of Adventure, and little did we know what a long life it would have.

Over the years there have been many Freeport books, and the city’s design made it easy to use in nearly any fantasy campaign setting. These last few years we've been concentrating on licensed games like Dragon Age and A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying, but Freeport was never far from our thoughts. We know there are tons of Freeport fans out there and we know that many of them graduated from Third Edition D&D to Paizo’s Pathfinder RPG. Thanks to the rise of Kickstarter, we now have a way of doing a new Freeport book the way we want to and that’s what this campaign is about.

We want to do a new edition of Freeport: The City of Adventure sourcebook that is bigger, meatier, and sexier than ever before. Our goal is for a 512-page full color hardback, with new locations, new NPCs, and a brand new adventure for low-level characters. The book will include full stats for the Pathfinder RPG, though it will also be easily usable with other games. Player-oriented rules support like classes, prestige classes, feats, and spells will also be available in a Player’s Guide to Freeport PDF.

Is this a lot of work? Damn right it is, but we’re getting a little help from our friends: Fiery Dragon! If you were around during d20’s heyday, Fiery Dragon needs no introduction. They burst onto to the scene with NeMoran’s Vault and went on to join Swords & Sorcery Studio and to publish Iron Heroes. We've made a deal with our good friends at FD to help us on Freeport: The City of Adventure. They will put the book together under the guidance of Freeport creator Chris Pramas. They've done some great adventures over the years, so we’re excited to see what they can do with Freeport!

We've also got Pathfinder experts on the project to make sure the rules are done right and up to date with the current state of the game.

Our goal for this Kickstarter is high at $50,000 but there are good reasons for that. For one thing, we’re going to be commissioning an enormous amount of brand new color art and a new cover painting. For another, printing a 512-page hardback is not a cheap undertaking. We've always had to do Freeport on a strict budget before. This time we want it to be the total package!

So strap on your cutlass and get ready to cast off for Freeport: The City of Adventure! We need a big crew to make this happen, so spread the word like a drunk sailor in dockside bar!

Return to Freeport Adventure Series!

Freeport: The City of Adventure is shaping up to have at least 150 pages of new material. We've heard from a lot of folks who want more frosting on their Freeport cake though and who are we to argue?

We are pleased to announce Return to Freeport, a brand new adventure series that will be released in six parts over 2014. The format will be similar to our Mutants & Masterminds adventure series, Emerald City Knights. Every other month starting in February, we’ll release a new chapter of Return to Freeport in PDF format. Each will be about 20 pages and retail for $3.99. The first chapter will be for 3rd level characters and it will scale up from there as the PCs gain xp.

If you back the Kickstarter for $30* or more, you will get all six chapters of Return to Freeport for FREE

Confirmed authors right now are Steve Kenson (Mutants & Masterminds, Pathfinder Game Mastery Guide), Stephen Radney-Macfarland (Pathfinder Advanced Player’s Guide and Ultimate Combat), Jody Macgegor (Cults of Freeport and WFRP Nights Dark Masters) and Chris Pramas (Dragon Age RPG, Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to the River Kingdoms). We will announce the remaining three as they come on board.

* Note that backers who picked Scurvytown Special do not get this reward. That choice is for the book and its PDF only.

Dark Deeds in Freeport Adventure!

Backers at $100 and up will also get a PDF of the new Dark Deeds in Freeport Adventure from Kobold Press for FREE! This official licensed adventure should be released by June, so you can get some Pathfinder Freeport goodness to tide you over until the new book is ready. What is Dark Deeds in Freeport? Let the Kobolds tell you all about it!

Dark Deeds in Freeport

Why has truth suddenly become so commonplace in Freeport? Can the city support not one but two churches dedicated to truth-speaking? How are the secrets of thieves, assassins, Captains' Council members, and "legitimate businessmen" becoming common knowledge, and what can be done about it? What should be done about it? And is any of this linked to the rash of thefts, murders, and insanity plaguing the city?

Dark Deeds in Freeport is a 64-page adventure arc of five connected Pathfinder RPG scenarios designed for a group of four PCs beginning at 9th level and ending at 12th.

Dark Deeds in Freeport...

* features new spells, new magic items (from minor to near-artifact level), news monsters, new fully-statted Freeport NPCs.

* mixes swashbuckling, investigation, and insanity in ways familiar to fans of Green Ronin's popular Freeport setting.

 * is fully integrated into the history and ongoing storylines of the Freeport setting and its adventures can be used individually or in a level-spanning mini-campaign.

* is written by Christina Stiles (editor of Green Ronin's Black Sails Over Freeport and lead designer of Kobold Press's Journeys to the West) and Mike Franke and Phil Minchin with contributions from Ryan Costello, Jr., Robert Hahn, Carlos Ovalle, and Rory Toma.

* is edited by Spike Y Jones (editor of Green Ronin's Testament and Wild Cards and Kobold Press's Midgard: Player's Guide to the Crossroads and Monsters of Sin series).

If you pledge at Freeport Pirate or above, you'll get Dark Deeds as soon as it releases!

As our Mutants & Masterminds fans know, we've been working with the fine folks at Lone Wolf for years to provide M&M support for their Hero Lab software. Hero Lab, as many games can attest, is a super useful character creation program. It helps you make and maintain a character, doing a lot of the hard work for you and giving you a character sheet with everything figured correctly.

If our Kickstarter funds, we will make the Freeport rules content available to ALL Pathfinder users of Hero Lab for FREE. You’ll be able to use our classes, feats, magic items, spells, etc. when you create your character or NPCs. It’s something the whole Pathfinder community can use and enjoy but only if we make our goal!

Promo Miniature!

But wait, there's more! We are teaming up with Eastern Front Studios to bring you a Freeport promotional mini as part of this Kickstarter. Acclaimed artist Brian Snoddy has done concept art for a degenerate serpentman mini, complete with a Yellow Sign shield. If you support the Kickstarter at the Freeport Pirate level or above, you get a serpentman mini for free! The mini will be approximately 28mm in size and made of pewter.

If you want more than one, or if you have pledged at a level lower than Freeport Pirate and still want some sweet serpentmen, you can get them as an add-on.

If you pledged at the Freeport Pirate level or above, you can add up to 10 more minis for $7 each. Just increase your pledge by the appropriate amount.

If you pledged at Lubber to Buccaneer, you can add up to 10 minis for $7 each, but please add $5 for US shipping and $10 for international shipping. Just increase your pledge by the appropriate amount and don't forget to add shipping!

$55,000: The book will come with a poster map of Freeport. Funded!

$60,000: We are commissioning a brand new cover for the book. If we reach this stretch goal, we’ll hire renowned artist Wayne Reynolds to return to Freeport one more time and paint it for us! Funded!

$65,000: We will do an AGE Freeport Companion. All backers at Mariner level and up (except the Scurvytown Specials) will get a PDF of this book as part of their rewards. AGE (the Adventure Game Engine) is the system that powers our Dragon Age RPG. We are working on a new AGE RPG that will release in 2014. The AGE Freeport Companion will come out after that, so it can be built off the new game rather than Dragon Age (which has, among other things, a magic system particular to its setting). Join us in Freeport, AGE fans. The fun here is Unspeakable! Funded!

$75,000: Our (final?) stretch goal is that we will commit to doing the Advanced Bestiary for Pathfinder (likely as its own Kickstarter). To give you folks something concrete for helping to make that happen, we'll also do a new 32-page Freeport module that uses monsters created with the new Advanced Bestiary. All backers at Mariner level and up will get a PDF of the adventure for free!

More stretch goals to come if we raise enough booty!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Green Ronin is an experienced publisher. We've been in business since 2000 and have published well over a hundred books. The risk on this project is low. We have an experienced staff and we make roleplaying books day in and day out.

Our target date for the PDF release of the book is November, with the print version to come out two months later. The main risk, as with any RPG project, is lateness. One of the reasons we partnered up with Fiery Dragon is to allow us to do this project in a reasonable time. Still, a 512 page book with new art and layout is a big job. It could be it takes us until January to get the PDF out if some things don't go smoothly.

That said, I'm confident we can do this project in the time we outlined if we are funded. Thanks for your support.

FAQ

  • The answer is simple: we are hiring experts to design and develop the rules sections. Green Ronin and Fiery Dragon have a lot of experience with the d20 rules but we understand that Pathfinder is its own beast. Our focus will be on the expanding the city with new locations, NPCs, adventures, and the like. For the rules sections we are working with experience Pathfinder freelancers to make sure they are cutting edge. We intend to use existing Pathfinder classes, monsters, magic items, and so on where appropriate. We want this to be a great book in every respect.

  • Freeport: The City of Adventure Third Edition and the Player’s Guide to Freeport are straight up Pathfinder. Some of the PDF rewards, like Dark Wings Over Freeport and The Freeport Trilogy, are older books that use the D&D 3.5 rules.

  • Freeport is a city setting for roleplaying games that mixes classic fantasy elements with pirates and Lovecraftian horror. It's been designed so the city can easily be dropped into existing campaign settings, whether they are published or homebrewed. Freeport: The City of Adventure Third Edition will include an optional chapter that blows Freeport out into a full campaign setting, however.

  • We will send out PDFs of Freeport: The City of Adventure Third Edition out as soon as the book is ready. The target date is November. The print edition and other shippable rewards will then come out two months later. Existing PDFs (like the poster map and Dark Wings Over Freeport) will be sent out within a month of the Kickstarter’s closing. The Player’s Guide to Freeport PDFs will be sent out by June.

  • The first edition of Freeport: The City of Adventure was released in 2002. Its next iteration, The Pirate’s Guide to Freeport, was released in 2007 and we’re counting that as Second Edition. The new book will be the third.

  • Yes, but it won’t include any of the special rewards for backers.

  • We will be selling the finished book through game stores, book stores, and our webstore after it ships to backers. If you only want the book, you’ll be able to get it that way. You could also try talking to your local store and seeing if they’ll buy into the Kickstarter at the Sea Lord’s Guard level.

  • Any backer can buy up to 10 minis (plus shipping if that's the only physical product you'll be getting). If you only want minis, you can buy in for as little as $1 and then you'll be able to get minis as an add-on.

  • We are doing Freeport: The City of Adventure Third Edition this way because we think the largest segment of Freeport’s fan base by far plays Pathfinder these days. However, we are not abandoning other systems. In fact, we are working on a FATE Freeport Companion right now for use with Evil Hat’s FATE Core rules (look for that this summer). We’d like to provide alternate stats in various systems for the new material in this book, but that is likely to be a slow process. System specific conversion threads in our forums may be the fastest way to handle it.
