SPECIAL SURPRISE INCENTIVE!

We just got a special gift from The Seed Keeper Company- every single pledge will be getting a surprise incentive. Make a pledge now to participate!

THE PROJECT

Peterson Garden Project will open The Fearless Food Kitchen community education teaching kitchen in the Broadway Armory on Chicago’s North Side, with cooking classes for everyone, events, and community programming for families, kids and older adults. We're asking you to help us buy utensils and equipment, so poor Chef Jeff can open that wine. He really needs it after trying to scramble eggs without a bowl.

FEARLESS FOOD™

Peterson Garden Project is best known for its 8 Chicago Pop Up Victory Gardens (in Rogers Park, Albany Park, Edgewater, Andersonville,  West Ridge, Swedish Covenant Hospital, and at the Field Museum), our Learning Center and a new collaborative program in Environmental Education with Northeastern Illinois University. In 2014, more than a thousand families are growing enough food for 60,000 meals.

And now, it’s the Fearless Food kitchen too, so we can teach you how to prepare all that great produce you're growing in your garden.

WE CAN COOK IT

This July, we’ll move into our next phase. The video shows our buddy "Chef" Jeff in our actual new site- The Fearless Food Kitchen- working with the actual existing equipment. That is, a gorgeous space with all the appliances, and none of the utensils.

“Fearless Food” is a multiplatform effort including classes, books, videos and of course our new teaching kitchen. It brings Peterson Garden Project to our goal of teaching everyone about growing and cooking food, or as we like to say, education from plot to plate.

Fearless Food: We Can Cook It will teach people like you how to make great food in your own kitchen, focusing on fresh and homegrown, seasonal produce and affordable grocery store staples. We’ll do classes with basic easy-to-follow instructions for Preparing the Harvest, Traditional Cuisines, Canning and Preserving and more.  Help us raise enough and we’ll add a video series called Fearless Food Minutes, for both cooking and growing fresh food.

Our location is a marvelous teaching kitchen in Chicago’s Broadway Armory right near the Thorndale L stop. We've got the lease, and we've got great programs like "Senior-Senior"- for older adults and at risk youth in addition to our regular classes. We're very excited to let you know that Chipotle is partnering with us on these efforts through a cash grant and inkind support.

The kitchen is ready to go: It’s got learning stations, ovens, counters, and refrigerators. It's got an 18-foot long farm table (that you can visit in our booth at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show from March 14 to 23).

What it doesn’t have is utensils, pots, and bowls and a hand sink.  We need signs. We need recipe books and cards, plus carryout containers so our students can take the yummy things they make home with them. Your gift will help us stock the kitchen with these items.

JUST DO ANY (OR ALL!) OF THESE 4 EASY THINGS TO HELP US TEACH YOU HOW TO COOK!

1. Make a pledge

Fearless Food at Peterson Garden Project is more than this teaching kitchen—it’s free Grewbie™ classes, demos, and community clean up days. It's our fantastic new book (yours for a pledge of $50). It’s collaborations with local social service and youth groups. It’s learning about a cool new tomato from your neighbor. It’s the Grow2Give™ program with 75 plots this year growing more than ten thousand meals for people who are food insecure. It’s Block Captains and PlotLucks and Movie Nights.

And now, it’s the Fearless Food kitchen too, so we can teach you how to prepare all that great produce you're growing in your garden.

But mostly, you are Peterson Garden Project. Our gardeners and volunteers and donors give PGP the pulse that keeps it going throughout the year.

For you, with your passion for fresh, homegrown food, Peterson Garden Project helps you to make a difference. Help us by making a pledge right now.

2. Tell Somebody! In fact, tell everybody!

Put us on your Facebook feed, start a Twitter thread, Snapchat, Instagram or your social media of choice (#Fearlessin14). Call your mom and tell her to put it on her Facebook page.

3. Share the video!

Did you laugh? We had so much fun making that. But cleaning up the mess, not so much. Share the video so everyone knows how badly we need mixing bowls.

4. Make a pledge

Oops, did we already say that? Well, now that you’ve seen the website, shared the video, and told everyone (including your mom), we’re asking you again. Won’t you help right now by clicking on the pledge button and choosing a gift? There are some great incentives for you to select, and best of all, you’ll help us teach a city how to cook its own food.

WHO SHOULD SUPPORT THIS PROJECT:

Do you or does someone you know follow us online? People like you are making a difference—make a pledge!

Do you celebrate Chicago’s cultural diversity?  We’ll have some great classes in ethnic traditions using both typical Midwestern produce and some of the interesting plants our immigrant gardeners are growing!

Are you a gardener? You’re helping to spread the word about the importance of local food—make a pledge!

Are you a home cook?  You’re bringing traditional skills back into modern lives—make a pledge!

Do you want to be a home cook? Let us teach you. (Make a pledge.)

Do you eat? What are we saying? Everybody eats! Make a pledge to ensure a world of safe, delicious, locally grown and home cooked food.

Risks and challenges

As noted above, our location is a marvelous teaching kitchen in Chicago’s Broadway Armory right near the Thorndale L stop. We've got the lease and required permits. We've got great programs like "Senior-Senior"- for older adults and at risk youth in addition to our regular classes.

The kitchen itself is ready to go: It’s got learning stations, ovens, counters, and refrigerators. Our Kickstarter will allow us to install a required hand sink, and purchase utensils and equipment for instructors and for teaching stations.

Since 2010 Peterson Garden Project has installed 11 large community gardens, including our two new ones scheduled for 2014. Three of our sites have closed-- we just picked them up (literally) and moved to new spaces.

We're excited to go from plot to plate this year. Your support will help people learn skills that they and their families will use for generations.
