What happens when four first-timers accept a challenge to ride naked in Seattle's legendary Solstice Parade? This lighthearted adventure begins the moment they accept the challenge, and reaches a climax on parade day in the streets of Seattle. We share in the riders’ trepidations, challenges and transformative moments along the way.
When naked cyclists began crashing the parade in the mid-90s, Seattle faced a crucial decision: would the city tolerate an extreme expression of creativity, or would it, like many other American cities, crack down hard?
Through first-person footage and in-depth conversations with critics, fans and organizers of the ride, Beyond Naked explores our deep-rooted fear and awkward fascination with nakedness. What can we learn about who we are and who we want to become from those willing to dare more with less?
"Deliberately breaking social conventions is scary, but liberating," says Beyond Naked director Dan McComb. "Recognizing that much of what we do is a choice rather than an obligation can awaken us to our unexplored potential.”
Experience the fear, excitement and freedom that comes with breaking the deeply rooted social taboo against getting naked in public. Anything can happen when you go Beyond Naked!
Who's our crew? Dan McComb is our film’s director and principal cinematographer. Lisa Cooper is our producer and second camera operator, as well as Dan’s creative collaborator and sound recordist. Tiberio Simone is our front man, our catalyst character that engages participants and random passersby in interesting and often evocative conversations about getting naked.
On the day of the parade, our lean, mean crew will grow to as many as 30 as we follow our four film participants as they strip down, paint up and hop on their bikes to be greeted by a crowd of 100,000 screaming fans.
How does Kickstarter work? Kickstarter is a platform for funding creative projects. In exchange for your support, we offer a variety of sweet rewards and our most sincere gratitude. Funding is all-or-nothing, so we have to raise the total amount of $13,500; if we don't make our goal, your credit card will not be charged. If we do reach our goal, (and we know we will with your support!), then you will receive a receipt for your credit card charge, our delightful rewards and a great, big hunka-hunka Beyond Naked love.
Where will the funds go? Your donations will be used to cover expenses that include renting camera stabilizers, purchasing hard drives and specially outfitting bicycles to allow filming cheek-to-cheek with our naked riders. Feeding the crew, buying paint and renting cameras, sound gear and even a radio-controlled helicopter—it all adds up. When it's all done, we'll hire a broker to help us get the film on Netflix.
Even with the generous efforts of our amazing volunteers, making a film is expensive work. We need your help!
Limited Reward: Parade Day VIP Suit. We have an extra special reward limited to the 10 backers at $500 level - watch the parade at a VIP backer party from one of the best views of the parade in Fremont from a spacious 3rd floor office suite across the street from Lenin in the Fremont Space Building. See photo below. You can't get a better view of the parade with your clothes on!
Last year, about 600 cyclists rode. This year, if the weather is good, ride organizers expect as many as 1,000 naked cyclists to ride in front of as many as 100,000 spectators.
