About

(Please read the interview I did about this play on The Daily Dot)

I intend to submit 'ISIS: A gay love story' into this year's Tiger Dublin Fringe Fest. 100% of the money I raise will go towards the play's production and even if the play is not selected I will stage it independently.

'ISIS: A gay love story' is about a young, gay renegade from Dublin (Owen) who travels over to Syria in an attempt to make his fortune by smuggling one million euros worth of cannabis into the country.

Owen is then captured by ISIS and held prisoner awaiting to be executed. The guards go through his phone and soon discover that he is not only a drug dealer, but also an open homosexual, which intensifies the abuse he receives.

However, one of his captures (Omar), who is an ISIS commander and also secretly gay, finds this fearless young man from Ireland remarkably enticing.

Owen and his three fellow prisoners soon discover Omar's secret and come up with a plan to manipulate his affection for Owen with the ultimate aim of securing their freedom. However, once Owen gets to know him personally he begins to develop real feelings of love for him.

Can he possibly stay in a relationship with a man who committed such barbaric atrocities or will Owen betray him for the sake of saving his fellow prisoners?

Risks and challenges

The play is still very much in its infancy and a lot of work needs to be done before it will be ready to go on stage for the Tiger Dublin Fringe Fest, if selected.

The festival is very well established and supports up and coming productions in many different ways, such as giving you the choice to choose from a wide variety of select venues.

The total budget will go towards a variety of different things needed like: a set designer, light operator, props/costumes, actor fees, production manager, sound operator, stage manager, advertisements, etc. I will use my experience and connections as a journalist to source them through various avenues.

It will also be my first play, but I want to do it right and will take on board all of the support and advice I can possibly get.

The plot of my play is a hot potato and runs the risk of controversy among certain people who may deem it extremely stupid to blatantly contradict everything that ISIS stands for.

However, as a firm believer of free speech, I feel it's very important to show that we're not afraid to creatively express ourselves even at the extent of royally pissing off a group of people who deplore our ideals.

I think Mel Brooks puts what I'm trying to say perfectly when talking about lampooning the Nazi regime with his award winning hit 'The Producers' -

"I was never crazy about Hitler...If you stand on a soapbox and trade rhetoric with a dictator you never win...That's what they do so well: they seduce people. But if you ridicule them, bring them down with laughter, they can't win. You show how crazy they are."
