Hummingbird hammocks strives to make some of the best built and most creative hammocks to ever hit the open market. The concept of our hammocks evolved when we made a large multi-person hammock out of a golf net that we picked up for around $10 at a local sporting goods store and some dynamic climbing rope that we had laying around. From that, we realized that quality built innovative hammock designs was something the market was lacking. After using our crude mutit-person hammock hanging in our backyard for several months, we realized that our hammock, although great fun, needed several design refinements and improvements. So we hit the drawing board and have developed two very unique hammocks that bring the relaxation of hammocks to market like never before. Our hammocks come in two different sizes. First, our mega three person hammock measures 18 feet by 8 feet: this hammock brings backyard relaxation to a whole new level with the ability to comfortably accommodate three people. This hammock is rated to hold three to five people or up to 1000 pounds.
You can relax with all your best friends in one place or catch some z’s by yourself. These mega hammocks will be featured in many colors of ripstop nylon and the webbing will be black. The webbing is only visible on the corners of these hammocks because of the way it’s made for added strength.
Pledgers for the mega hammocks will have the option to choose between four different colors: buttercup yellow, orange, coyote brown, and royal blue. These colors will vary slightly in shade and tone due to differences in the batches of material the colors are not always an exact matches.
Second is our single person hammock. This compact hammock packs much smaller than most conventional nylon hammocks (about half the size), is incredibly light, and doesn't require a compression strap to achieve a small pack size. The single person hammocks are about five inches by five inches and 2 3/4 inches thick when packed into there storage pouch they weigh just 7.5 ounces, and when open they are four feet by nine feet. These single person hammocks are rated to hold 275 pounds.
These hammocks will also be featured in many vibrant colors with black binding tape that will not be visible due to the way the material is wrapped around the tape for strength. Pledgers for the one person hammocks will have the option to choose between four different colors of hammock: lime green, orange, skydiver blue, and red.
Our hammocks are built by an FAA certified parachute rigger, someone who has proven to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that he has the skills and knowledge to maintain, repair, and build skydiving equipment. This same extensive working knowledge of materials, design, and construction methods is applied directly to our hammocks. Every hammock is made by hand with the same care, strength, and precision of a parachute designed to save lives. If we were to send the sewing work overseas we would not be able to personally ensure that every hammock is exactly as we intended and is the strength and quality we demand. The single person hammocks are built using a calendared ripstop nylon, the same material used to build skydiving reserve parachutes. It is incredibly strong (rated at about 50lbs per square inch), lightweight, and compresses into a small size, allowing us to make a hammock that packs about half the size of a conventional hammock and weighs much less. Ripstop is a term used to describe fabric woven in a particular pattern that will stop a rip moving across its surface. This prevents you from tearing through the bottom of the hammock and waking up in a rather unfortunate fashion. The edges of the single person hammock have half inch grosgrain tape sewn inside. This provides extra strength, stability, and comfort. The mega hammock is made out of 1.9oz polyurethane coated ripstop nylon, this fabric is incredibly strong (rated at about 100lbs per square inch.) The edge of this hammock has type 17 nylon webbing sewn in and used for the attachment points to the four corners. This webbing is rated for 2500lbs, will not stretch, and is low bulk. All the hammocks will be sewn on an industrial sewing machine using size 69 bonded nylon thread, this thread is very strong and is the very same thread used on parachutes. In addition in order to save more on pack size, weight, and portability our hammocks will include soft link attachments instead of traditional carabiners. These are used widely in skydiving today as a means of connecting the parachute lines to the jumper. They contain no hard parts, are stronger than a carabiner of similar size, weigh next to nothing, and are impossible to cross load.
Risks and challenges
Designing, prototyping, and bring a product to market has all types of challenges, but we have both grown up around small businesses and product development. We have a great deal of experience in the process of developing ideas in a linear direction, until the goal is reached. In this business opportunity, the majority of the hard work has already been done so it’s really up to you guys to help us get some air under our wings for this Hammock project. The challenge of creating new ideas has never been a challenge for us, and we are constantly coming up with new and interesting hammock ideas, as well has other product ideas. We will continue to try pushing the limits of relaxation and hammocks as long as Hummingbird Hammock exists. We are even toying around with the idea of making a Hummingbird hammock couch in the future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
