ALL ABOUT FRED
In March 2017, On The Rocks and Dixon Place will present the world premiere of OTR’s original play: FRED.
FRED is the story of a robot named Fred and his inventor’s comatose widow, Diana. After two hundred years of keeping Diana alive with little more than a repurposed pool vacuum tube, Fred decides they both could use a change. Taking a leap of faith, he packs up their home in Phoenix and the odd couple relocate to The Clam—a once luxurious Retirement Space Station orbiting Pluto. There the music of The Kunzigs, The Clam’s in-house alien Carpenters’ tribute band, awakens something in Fred’s ancient companion, changing their lives forever.
After the success of our last show, The White Stage Quadrilogy, the venerable Lower East Side performance venue, Dixon Place, commissioned a brand new play from us. The idea for FRED was conceived from a mix of interests. We were keen to write a play with a science-fiction element (hence, the robot and aliens), we wanted to write something that took place at a senior citizen’s home (ergo, the setting of The Clam - a retirement home/space station) and we really wanted to explore the dynamics of a family band (which eventually became The Kunzigs, The Clam’s alien Carpenter’s tribute band). After spending the last year writing, re-writing and more re-writing we have a script and concept that we are very proud of and excited to share with audiences this coming spring.
We are very lucky to be continuing our long collaboration with the brilliant and humorous choreographer, Chloe Kernaghan and an incredibly talented, dedicated and charming cast of OTR stalwarts and a few new faces!
FRED is a commission of Dixon Place which means that they are contributing to the production costs and have paid us a fee, which is incredibly helpful and real evidence of their belief in our company and the production. However, the amount they are able to provide is not quite enough to fully realize the show. And so we find ourselves back in the exciting world of Kickstarter asking for YOUR help.
Your donation would go towards paying for our set (creating the faded grandeur of The Clam’s auditorium), costumes (a retro sci-fi smorgasbord of polyester, wigs, robot heads and green alien make-up), props (quite a few of them and frequently painstakingly handcrafted by uber-genius prop master, CFord), rehearsal space (which is very, very, very pricey in NYC), transportation (renting vans to get our set, costumes, props, etc., etc., to and from the the theater), and last but not least, compensating the cast (this is VERY important to us as they work incredibly hard and are really the most important aspect to putting up this show).
Any donation amount is helpful and we would be BEYOND grateful if you choose to do so. From our experience using Kickstarter before, these donations really do add up, so even if you can only chip in 10 bucks it HELPS and we would really really appreciate it!!
Founded in the great North Hollywood basin, On The Rocks Theatre is comprised of long time collaborators, Christopher Ford and Dakota Rose. Previous work at Dixon Place includes Wolfert and The White Stag Quadrilogy, which critics described as “unceasingly entertaining” and “dripping with originality”.
FRED is written and designed by OTR co-founders’ Christopher Ford and Dakota Rose, Directed by Dakota Rose, and Choreographed by Chloe Kernaghan!
We hope to see you at the show! Playing at Dixon Place on March 17th, 18th, 24th, 25th, 31st, and April 1st at 7:30p!
Risks and challenges
There are definitely challenges when producing independent theatre. What we have done in the past and will do on this forthcoming production, is budget a certain amount of contingency money in the case of an emergency. We have been prepping this show for months and are eager and prepared to face whatever challenges financially, creatively or otherwise that may come our way.
Thank you for your time!
