About this project
Reclaimed Fleece and Wool Clothes Become Beautiful Accessories!
No melting down, no re-dying... just die cutting and a low-heat press and molding process turns an old fleece jacket or wool sweater into something new, useful, and durable. You can send yours in, or we can use gear we have reclaimed: the choice is yours.
What is The Great ReFleece?
The Great ReFleece is a project designed to inspire reuse: you send in an old fleece or wool garment, and we turn it into something beautiful and useful. Or choose from the reclaimed garments and scraps we have here, and kickstart upcycling as a scalable, economically feasible enterprise!
Our backers will receive one of the new products (4square organizer, coasters, or an e-reader or tablet cover with color on the outside), either from our collection of reclaimed fleece, or from their OWN fleecy or wooly thing that they send in.
Our goal is to inspire folks to re-use their stuff, not just because it's the cool thing to do for the planet, but because our designs are so nifty that they just can't wait to hold them, and use them, and love them.
What on earth is ReFleece?
Not a video watcher? No problem. Here's the recap: ReFleece is a new kind of felt made from reclaimed fleece clothing or scraps (the colored side) and old plastic bottles (the charcoal gray side). Using an innovative, low-heat molding process, ReFleece creates structured, beautiful accessories like iPad and e-reader covers.
Until now, we've used Patagonia(TM) garments, returned to stores by customers after they were worn, and Polartec(TM) fleece scraps, sent to us by the company so they wouldn't have to be downcycled. And until now, we've always put the colored fleecy bit on the inside, like so:
For Kickstarter, we want to try out some new products: coasters, 4square organizers, and a mid-size tablet sleeve. And we want to try turning them inside out, putting the colored fleece on the outside, for all to see!
Do I have to send in a fleece piece?
No... you can back us without parting with your beloved fleece. We have lots of salvaged fleece here, and we can pick a piece for you. You will still be making use of material that would otherwise be downcycled or trashed, you will still be the first to try one of our new products, and you can still have it laser etched (personalized) if you like.
If you have a garment that can be given to someone in need, we encourage you to do that. But if it is really worn out, or if it has so many special memories that you just can't bear give it up (and it has consequently taken up permanent residence on your closet floor), why not make something new and useful out of it?
What's this stuff like?
- Super lightweight. Only 3-5 ounces, depending on the model.
- Water-resistant. Just like the original fleece jackets, the case shed spills and water easily.
- Washable. Just run them under the tap.
- Rugged. This stuff lasts (almost) forever. Which is why we're re-using it!
Four New Product Choices:
We have FOUR models that you can choose from, all turned INSIDE OUT: e-reader cases,* for Kindle and similar devices, that open like a book; tablet sleeves,* for iPad and similar devices, that slip on for a snug ride and stay open when empty for an easy return; 4square organizers that let you corral your clutter any which way you like; and beautiful coasters that protect your furniture while sparking conversation. You can pick the size that fits your device for the first two (see rewards for specifics).
*See the FIT CHART at the bottom to be sure your device will fit!
Attentive Kickstarters may wonder: Where is the picture of the coasters? Very good question. We have only renderings of the coasters at this point... which are not allowed on Kickstarter. But our friend Angie Kim designed them, and we think they're wicked cool.
ReFleece is an upcycled product. (Translation: we make new stuff from old stuff.) Which means we don't use bolts of fabric -- even from recycled fibers -- just to achieve a certain color. And we don't re-dye our fabric to achieve color consistency -- an often overlooked environmental impact of new or even recycled fabrics.
Instead, we offer ReFleece products in COLORWAYS: ranges of tones and textures within a color family. You'll get something awesome, but it might not be exactly the shade you see in the picture. Not ideal for bridesmaids dresses, but otherwise, kind of exciting to see what shows up, right?
Laser Etching? Yes we can!
You way you want yours personalized with your name, the name of your sweetie, an inspiring word, or your dog's birthday? We can do it! Just choose a laser-etching reward (see reward chart), and we will etch your text into the product of your choice.
Who are you people?
We (Sam and Jennifer) are a husband and wife, mom and pop team. We are launching ReFleece to inspire people to think about where their stuff comes from, and where it goes. Our goal is to rebuild the lost art of fixing and re-using stuff we live with, so that every product is a cherished product.
How it Works:
If we reach our goal, we'll send you a form for you to fill out your color choices, sizes, laser etching preferences (if applicable) and product choice. If you've chosen a reward at The Great ReFleece level (where you send in your old fleece), we'll then send a mailer for you to use, to make it easier. And then we'll take it from there!
Risks and challenges
- Some fabrics will not work well with our process. We will send clear instructions about what to send (fleece jackets, sweaters, vests, long johns, blankets, baby buntings, pants, etc.) and what not to send (very thin fabrics, such as lightweight pajamas, and very stretchy fabrics, such as thin stretch yoga pants). We will send clear instructions about what will and will not work!
- Another risk is that folks will forget to send in their stuff after they place an order (heck, we forget stuff like that all the time). We plan to make it as easy as possible by sending pre-paid mailing envelopes (domestic only), as well as reminders!
- We hope that folks will check the fit chart carefully before backing us. We would hate to make a special case for someone that doesn't fit their device!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
