UPDATE: WE MADE IT!
We didn't think we'd be posting anything like this this fast, but:
THIS JUST MEANS WE HIT OUR BASIC GOAL.
IT DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE DONE!
The way Kickstarter works is this: you get a certain number of days to raise all the money you can for your project. If you raise more than your basic goal, you can use that money to make your project even bigger and more grand and more wonderful than you originally planned on.
And that's what we're going to do! Obviously, we have the basic funds we need to finish our first set of three episodes of Mighty Aphrodite!, but we'd very much like to make the whole set, and that means WE KEEP GOING!
Krypton Media Group was never meant just to be the parent company of Krypton Radio, the world’s only full time sci-fi geek culture radio station. It was formed because its founders, Susan Fox and Gene Turnbow, and all their friends, like to create wonderful things and share them with everyone. Krypton Radio has been working out so well that they figured it’s time to try the Next New Thing.
Mighty Aphrodite! is a new animated web series about the Goddess of Love herself who, after being stranded for two thousand years at a borrowed Temple of Hera, finds herself once again able to access the world of mortals. Much to her surprise, she meets an archeologist named Ben and falls in love!
She thinks she's got everything under control - but she so doesn't. Despite being thousands of years old, she's a bit naive about how the world works in the days after the time of the ancient gods and goddesses. She wants to help a lot of lonely hearts - but the heart she saves might be her own.
We realize it's asking a lot of you to believe we can do what we say for so little money, but set your heart at ease - we've already completed one entire episode to prove we can do it. And here it is:
The first episode is obviously done!
The second episode will be a story about how Aphrodite talks things over with Zeus to get some fatherly advice.
The third episode will be one about how she and Ben rescue Kauket, the ancient Egyptian Goddess of Twilight, introducing a new series character.
As we reach our milestones, we'll reveal more and more of the planned episodes!
Aphrodite and Ben are voiced by Mary R. Bergman-Kridler and Shawn Crosby, with episodes initially being written and directed by series creator Gene Turnbow, with KMG / Krypton Radio’s Susan Fox serving in the producer’s role.
We want to publish Mighty Aphrodite! as a YouTube web series for all to enjoy, but to do that legally, we have to purchase the commercial license for Plotagon, the software we used. If we can afford this license and pay our voice actors, we can do pretty much anything we want, including sending Mighty Aphrodite to film festivals, developing the show into a longer format - the sky's the limit!
Each Stretch Goal we reach will add three more episodes to the production series.
Our version of Aphrodite isn't a warrior. She's all about love, and frankly that's a contagious idea. As producer Susan Fox puts it,
“Aphrodite was known as The Heavenly, The Merciful, The Smile-Loving… we need Aphrodite in the world today, now more than ever.”
Though Shawn Crosby is a seasoned actor with experience both on and off-camera, this is Mary Bergman-Kridler’s first experience with this kind of performance despite an extensive theatrical background. In a recent Facebook post, she said she was “so excited to be a part of this project!”
Given the family-friendly orientation of Krypton Media, it will also be completely safe for both work and kids and contains no nudity or raunchy language, instead relying on romance, humor, charm and endearing characters for its appeal.
The perks for this Kickstarter are mostly the sort of "you were there" prizes that remind you of the good thing you did when you helped us achieve our goals for the lower levels, and actual participation in the production at the higher levels..
For example, here's the handsome mousepad you'll get if you back us at the $35 "Pure Heart" level or more. It's a durable soft fabric mousepad with a nonskid rubber backing.
The "Aphrodite's Heart" women's tee you can see above, being modeled by our star, Ms. Mary R. Bergmain-Kridler. It's available with the $100 "Demigod" backer level in your choice of sizes. If a giant pink heart on your chest isn't exactly your style, we're sure you know some deserving lady who would look fabulous in it.
It just wouldn't be a Kickstarter without Stretch Goals, so of course we have them too. Our stretch goals are easy: more episodes!
1st Stretch Goal
If we get $2000 we can make six episodes!
2nd Stretch Goal
If we get $3000 we can make 10 episodes!
3rd Stretch Goal
You get the idea.
Depending on how well this goes, you could help us make lots of episodes. We think we might hit one or more of our stretch goals. We just don't know. A lot will depend on you. Of course, if we run out of stretch goals, we'll have to think of something fast, but we do have some really interesting ideas ...
Risks and challenges
The biggest single risk to the project is time. There are no technological or legal hurdles to overcome, leaving just the time it takes to make the episodes as the only issue. And as you can see from our first episode, there are no surprises waiting for us, no hard or impossible parts that might stop us from creating a little bit of magic.
Remember how popular Rooster Teeth's "Red vs Blue" was? That was made using nothing but a game engine. We're doing better than that already.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
