About this project
In the Forez, in the East of the Massif Central, France, Claudette, 75 years old, and her neighbors, all peasant farmers from a rural underclass, feel that consumerist society is ignoring them while at the same time gradually taking over what remains of their cultural heritage and know-how. But, all do not intend to be pushed around….
CHRISTOPHE AGOU, photographer
In September 2015, Christophe Agou passed away. For some he was a friend, part of the family. He was a talented photographer too.
Although rooted in his native Forez region, he lived in New York. He published his photographs in many well-known magazines: Newsweek, Time, Life, Géo, Libération, Télérama, Polka, NY mag, Sunday Times, Foto 8, El Païs…
He exhibited his work throughout the world: MoMA NY, Jeu de Paume Paris, Huston Fine Arts Museum, Fondation Pilar y Joan Palma de Majorque, Rencontres d'Arles, Smithsonian American Art Museum Washington DC, Brooklyn Museum, Galerie Robert Delpire Fait & Cause Paris, Musée d'Art Roger-Quilliot Clermont-Ferrand, Galerie Intervalle Paris… And at photography festivals in Europe and China.
Christophe also published several books: Les Faits secondaires pub. Atelier 108 (2013), Face au Silence pub. Actes Sud (2010) Winner of 17th European Prize for Book of Photography, Life Below pub. Quantuck Lane Press & W.W. Norton Company (2004)Special Mention at the Prix Kodak de la Critique Photographique, Finalist in the Prix de la Photographie de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Finalist in the W. Eugene Smith award.
SANS ADIEU, the film
While he shooted his photographs for Face au Silence, Christophe created a documentary film in which we find some of the people from his book. When his work was released, we went to meet him in the Forez and offered to produce the film Sans Adieu. We developed the project for a few years and then began its production.
Christophe would have liked to film more of the people he loved so much, Claudette, Jeannot, Jean, Mathilde, Christiane, Raymond, but his illness made travelling impossible. With his editor, Virginie Danglades, who is French but also lives in NY, they worked constantly for several months to complete the film. Thanks to these efforts, Sans Adieu finally exists, but there are still finishing touches to be made: Sound editing, mixing, calibration, standards requirements, master and copies of DCP projections, master and copies of videos…
To this we must add the music composed currently by Stuart Staples of the British band Tindersticks, best known for composing most of the music of Claire Denis films. They are on a world tour since the beginning of 2016.
LES ENRAGÉS, the production company
Founded in 1998, the company Les Enragés, based in Paris-France, aims to produce directors who offer a unique perspective on the world. It produces or co-produces short and feature films, multimedia and experimental works and documentaries. Aurélie Bordier and Pierre Vinour are the producers. Working with musicians from the rock scene is often chosen: Serge Teyssot-Gay (ex-Noir Désir and Zone Libre), Stuart Staples (Tindersticks), Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Beak>), Kris Sanchez (Le Cri de la Mouche, UltraOrange) Richard Escola (Verb", Stereozor), Cyrille Dufay… This year Les Enragés released Sauvage by Tom Geens, co-produced with the UK and Belgium, Grand Prix at the Dinard British Film Festival, Eurozoom distribution. Early 2017 will be released Vincent et la Fin du Monde by Christophe Van Rompaey, with Alexandra Lamy, co-produced with Belgium, Acting Award to Barbara Sarafian at Locarno, distribution Ad Vitam.
Below is the current funding received for the film :
CNC - Aide à l'Écriture du Scénario (direct to Christophe) (7,500)
CNC - Aide au développement 15,000
CNC - Aide au Développement Renforcé 50,000
RÉGION AUVERGNE – Aide à la Production 50,000
LES ENRAGÉS 56,690
PROCIREP – Aide à l'Écriture du Scénario 10,000
The cost of the film was first estimated at €307,491, but was reduced to €231,690 after negotiation of prices with providers (auditoriums, labs, rentals…), decrease in salaries, producers’ salaries and overhead costs of the participating company. We were to receive, after a struggle, €50,000from the Rhône-Alpes Cinéma, but the death of Christophe no longer enables us administratively to fulfill the necessary conditions and so the subsidy has been withdrawn. We currently need €50,000 to finish the film in the best conditions, ready to release to cinemas.
FOR € 4,000 : we do Sound-editing
FOR €15,000 : + Music
FOR €30,000 : + Postproduction works in lab (grading and works with "smoke")
FOR €40,000 : + Mix and postproduction works in lab (digital exportation of files…)
FOR €50,000 : + English translation and subtitles, commercial material, DCP (theaters copy) & videos, a part of production costs
CALL FOR KICKSTARTER
€15,000 would enable us to show it in digital file to distributors who are already in a position to see the film. But of course we strongly encourage our future contributors to reach or approach the sum of the 50,000 €, or as near as possible, that we still need! A big thank you if you could participate in funding or if you could share information on this marvelous film called Sans Adieu (literally "Without a goodbye").
Niloo, Christophe’s wife, Aurélie Bordier & Pierre Vinour
