What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

It is a well-known fact that sitting for long periods of time can be detrimental to your health. We tend to sit too long in our office, our cars, and while watching TV. Unfortunately, according to numerous reports, sitting for long periods of time can be harmful, potentially contributing to a shorter life span. There are devices available that can be set to notify users if they sit too long. Unfortunately, these devices can be expensive. They also allow users to easily turn them off rather than encourage them to move from their sitting position. Our company has been researching the development of a devices that would fill the gap missed by other devices to not only notify the user, but also encourage the user to act upon the notification. The issue would be to aid the person to actually 'Do It' rather than to ignore it. With our first product, we wanted to encourage a person to stand up after they have been sitting for a long period of time. Our device gives the user optional settings of up to two hours. The device would automatically deactivate when the user stands from a sitting position rather than look for the on/off switch to turn the device off. To meet these criteria, we have come up with a concept of the SitSense garter. The garter or strap would be worn above the knee by a man or woman and vibrate to notify the user when the time set by the user is exceeded. Essentially, it would rest unobtrusively on that person’s upper leg. The device would deactivate when the user moves from a sitting position to standing or walking. The device would automatically reset when the user assumes a sitting position. The device would be unobtrusive and no audible noise would be heard by others near the user. Different preset settings up to two hours could be set. As an additional feature, and possibly make it interesting to those people who enjoy wearing shorts, the design of the garter would be fashionable, leading people to show it off

Risks and challenges

We are in the process of completing the pre-production version of our device and are seeking funding that will enable us to move from the prototype to the production model. New design tools will allow us to finalize the pre-production into a much smaller unit about the size of a quarter dollar. The miniaturization of the device will ensure an unobtrusive and practical wearable device.
Manufactures with extensive knowledge of assembling flexible printed circuitry have been identified and will be interviewed as we progress in the development of the device.
The main challenge is not the development of the device but will be in marketing it. Our efforts will be directed in putting together a team with experience in contemporary marketing techniques. Our primary focus will be to introduce the device to health organizations and fitness clubs. We will possibly be looking into collaboration with one of these organizations.
