Dear Friends, old and new,
This is my second Kickstarter campaign and I am very excited about my new album "Black-Throated Blue." Like my previous KS funded "Honey and Tears," this album is also being produced by Ken Stringfellow of Posies, R.E.M. and Big Star fame.
We took a different approach to this album. We had a my full band in the studio; Doug Harper on guitar, Frank Dehler (Unnatural Axe) on bass, Malcolm Travis (Human Sexual Response, Sugar) on drums, and “Yours Truly” on guitar and vocals. The basic tracks are recorded live and have great energy. Elisa Birdseye joins us on viola, and Brother Cleve (Combustible Edison, Del Fuegos) on keyboards. Ken sings and plays on "Black-Throated Blue”as well.
Ken Stringfellow’s contribution to the production is pretty awesome! Because we recorded live in the studio, these songs have a rockin’ feel to them… As Ken says, “Even the slow songs somehow are hi-energy.” Some songs are melancholy, others “pure pop.” You will hear 60’s AM radio, and influences from Jonathan Richman to Burt Bacharach.
The album was recorded at Ed's Barn, Canton, MA. It was engineered by Ed Riemer. Special thanks to Ed and Loraine for their gracious hospitality.
I have asked Joanne Kaliontzis to help with the design work for Black-Throated Blue. Joanne and Mark Chesak put together the intro video that was shot during our recording session. Jean Hangarter has done some photography for the project.
Throughout the campaign I will update often with some preliminary mixes, more video from the session, overall progress of the project, and a few surprises.
As I am sure you all are aware, things are more expensive than they were in 2013 when I recorded "Honey and Tears." In that campaign we raised just over $10,000 and this time we need to raise $16,000.
Thanks for your support.
I know you will love "Black-Throated Blue."
