About this project
UPDATE: After reaching our first goal within 24 hours, and doubling down within 5 days, we're closing out the last few days of our fundraiser with a call for Fives for Food & Freedom Rides. If you haven't donated yet, now is the time--pledge $5 for the Food & Freedom Rides! Every new donation will get us closer to our final goal of purchasing (instead of renting) as much of our film equipment as possible so we can continue to use video to bolster our activities and campaigns into the future!
Meanwhile, we want to gather 500 "Likes" on Facebook and 500 "Followers" on Twitter by the time the rubber hits the road in Alabama. Be one of the 500 to ride with us from across the country!! Like us HERE, and Follow us HERE. And don't forget to invite your friends!
In 1961, twenty-four young Blacks and Whites put their lives on the line for what they knew was right. They rode together on buses through the segregated South and exposed racial injustice in a way that rocked the nation.
This summer's two Rideswill bring together youth and adult allies from diverse backgrounds to investigate how people on the frontlines of the food system are surviving in its dark side, and thriving in the light of their own alternatives.
The first ride, from August 7-18, will begin at the pivotal point of the original Freedom Rides: Birmingham, Alabama. It will end at a beacon for the future of America's food: Detroit, Michigan.
The second ride, from August 26-September 2, will travel through the nation's salad bowl: the agricultural giant that is California.
Originally, the Food & Freedom Rides were about building relationships between the riders and the people they visit along the way. But then we realized: America needs to know the people who are most impacted by the food system, and who are building the alternatives that benefit us all.
So we are going to use film for two purposes: 1) to encourage people to ride with us online by following our daily blog/vlog posts, and 2) to create a short documentary bringing together the entire experience of both rides.
This is where YOU come in: We've got money for the ride, but we need just a little bit more to document it with film.
Your generous donations will ensure we have the equipment, gear, software and expertise needed to document this journey and make it look good along the way!
Thank you for taking the time to check us out!
