LE GRAND REMIX
ONCE UPON A TIME IN NEW ORLEANS
(a dream was born)
What began as a unique #CreateLouisiana grant opportunity to showcase French culture in Louisiana is growing into a grand adventure in French/American filmmaking.
12 MILLION TV SCREENS
(and one big screen premiere)
When New Orleans was featured as one of TV5MONDE's live broadcast sites for their 25-hour world tour of francophone culture in September, Le Grand Remix was invited to participate and share some images from the movie.
But we hadn't filmed anything yet. So we pulled a day off the production schedule and moved it forward on the calendar to create a teaser that TV5MONDE broadcast to an estimated 12 million viewers in all 24 time zones.
Le Grand Remix will premiere at the Prytania Theatre in February of 2018 as part of the New Orleans French Film Festival. As we rise to this incredible occasion to share our story with the world, we hope you will join us on this adventure toward a dream come true.
SO WHAT'S THE STORY?
(of the movie)
Faced with not being allowed back into America if she leaves the US to attend her sister's wedding, a young African teacher at a French immersion school in New Orleans attempts to dance away her troubles.
This is JOSEPHINE, played by Marie Ba, who in real life teaches at Ecole Bilingue de la Nouvelle Orléans.
Josephine's escape music is provided by a teenage Vietnamese-American DJ grasping at the remnants of her own French immersion experience as she copes with losing her grandmother and having to leave New Orleans to go live with family out west.
This is CASSEE, played by Chloe Nelson, who in real life attended Ecole Bilingue de la Nouvelle Orléans.
When the beats fade, Josephine and Cassee share visions of the world as they imagine it could be, and each young woman's waking dreamscape helps the other to brave her own reality. These two amazing first-time actors were cast because they, along with nearly every other character in the film, are a real life part of Louisiana's astoundingly diverse French speaking community.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Thanks to #CreateLouisiana's French Culture Film Grant made possible by
Le Grand Remix was born in a spirit of collaboration. The people coming together to make this film a reality are my family, my colleagues, old friends and new friends I may not have met otherwise. Our collective talents are at the heart of the long-term promise of this project.
TO RAISE A MOVIE
Your contribution to this Kickstarter campaign has value far beyond allowing us to edit and color and compose music and sound mix and create innovative marketing art. Your pledge is more than just dollars to get a very cool film job done -- it's a vote of confidence. It says to the film professionals without whom Le Grand Remix would not exist that you believe in us. Your pledge says that you believe in the Louisiana stories that have yet to be told and in the Louisiana bridges that have yet to be built across cultural and economic divides, across oceans and plains and faraway mountainsides.
We successfully completed principal photography on October 16, and it has been a blast. Now we are focused on a finished film delivery date of February 16. Here's what we have left to do:
- Additional day of filming with Josephine and friends in New Orleans
- Innovative tricentennial marketing design and filming for end credits
- Promotional 360 degree filming of choreography featured in the film
- Visual effects (like turning that green screen into the Grand Canyon)
- Music composition with Lost Bayou Ramblers
- Music rights management
- Color grading and correction
- Sound mixing
- Getting the word out through marketing and promotional efforts
BE A PART OF THIS DREAM COME TRUE
To kick things off, #CreateLouisiana has partnered with NOVAC, Film New Orleans, New Orleans Film Society and Kickstarter to select Le Grand Remix as one of their Tricentennial Story Incubator matching fund projects. When we hit the $5K mark, they'll match us $5K.
COOL STUFF YOU GET

Risks and challenges
The challenges that remain for Le Grand Remix are all normal parts of completing any film on time and on budget. There is editing and sound design, coloring and sound mixing. And there's the music, which is so central to the film and to the New Orleans experience. With the support we garner through this Kickstarter campaign, our aim is to not just create a soundtrack we can afford on a shoestring but to work with musicians who can take the time to craft a score that elevates the movie to another level by mixing musical influences from French speaking and American musical traditions.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
