About Pepper & Carrot

Pepper & Carrot is originally a webcomic created by French artist David Revoy and is released in the Creatives Commons attribution license. I'm reusing his universe, design and character and build on the top a complete pixel art graphic layer and game thanks to the permissive licence.

David Revoy approves the existence of this project. He is not directly involved in this project, but he will make some artworks for the release of the game! By supporting or giving to Pepper & Carrot : Chaosah Balls, you do not support or sponsor David Revoy's work, but my work as a game developper and pixel artist. David Revoy support can be done via Patreon.

About this project, the video game

Pepper & Carrot : Chaosah Balls is an retro video game inspired by the classic arcade video game Pang. The game is an 2D action puzzle shooter with pixel art graphics. The game will be release in PC, Mac and Linux OS in a Steam version or in a DRM free version.

Story : Pepper is a young witch who lives with her cat Carrot in the forest. She wants to be the best witch by creating lots of potions. Her last experience about making potions failed and created dangerous balloons scaterring around the world. Taking her courage in both hands, she travels the world to destroy those she created by error.

There are two different modes in this game: Tour Mode and Panic Mode

Tour Mode 

Pepper must finish a round-the-world quest to destroy bouncing balloons that are terrorizing several of landmarks and cities from the universe of « Pepper & Carrot » webcomic. The fight to save the Earth begins on her house in the the forest near the village of "Squirrel's End" before moving on to the next location.

The Tour Mode has 50 levels. Every location has three stages in the same setting. One during the day, the evening and at night. Each of the stages has a set layout, consisting of walls, destructibe glass walls, invisible walls, ladders and ice. There's items such as candy and 1ups that can change the outcome of the stage. 

Panic Mode

In this mode, Pepper tries to last as long as she can with an endless rain of balloons. The default weapon is the two-shot and cannot be changed at any time. Every time a balloon is popped, a rainbow bar at the bottom is slowly filled. 

Filling the bar all the way causes the level number to rise, and the bar depletes back to zero. As more balloons are popped, the remaining and incoming balloons move faster.

You can choose plenty characters from the webcomic Pepper & Carrot. Each character has its own magic:

In my thirties, I decided to change my life and try to fulfill my dream, creating a video game. I’m working as a game designer and pixel artist. In this game, I create all the designs of the levels, the graphics in pixel art and the program. I’ve developed and shipped several mobile games and apps. I’m a nostalgic of old games from 8/16 bits era where the handling control was quick and simple. I want to create video game for all people where rules are easy to understand. For me, video games have always been a source to the fantasy and a way to escape the world and to stimulate creativity.

Video Games have always been an important part of my musical inspiration. To be honest, I still keep myself updated about the latest releases but I don’t play them anymore, mainly for one simple reason: almost all my free time is devoted to my family and my music. But I love Video Games. I love their music (of course), I love their graphics and aesthetics, I love their atmosphere and this unique feeling you got while playing them… and those pixels: damn, I love pixels!!!

Risks and challenges

We wanted to run a Kickstarter to rise the chance to deliver a great game by the support of a great community. This fundraiser is for asset production, dev time, fees, contract work, community building, marketing. We are aware that creating a game is a difficult, complex and resource heavy task. However, we are confident that we have a significant body of work already in place. We believe in our project. MAKE THIS GAME HAPPEN !

What platforms will Pepper & Carrot : Chaosah Balls release on?
The game will be release at start in PC, Mac & Linux.
Porting the game to consoles is also a risk in itself, since it can present some unforeseen technical challenges. Since the game is built in Unity, it could be port to consoles. We will release on PC and Mac to start, with PlayStation4 as a stretch goal. We are also currently evaluating additional platforms (ie: PSVita) as other stretch goals.

Will the game have any multplayer / coop in it?
We're first dedicating totally to a quality single player experience at the moment.
We also simply dont have the needed ressources to offer good multiplayer: servers infrastructure, network code and a large enough active community to make sure you'll always be able to find a game. Doing both multiplayer and singleplayer would mean less quality overall.
Doing multiplayer in local might be possible for the release.
