About this project
Hello, I’m Sharon McConnell Dickerson. I am a blind sculptor and painter, and have been and am blessed beyond belief. Thank you for visiting my Kickstarter Page. I live in Como, Mississippi, which is located in the hill country just before dropping down into the flatland of the Delta. Just less than one hour south of Memphis, Tennessee, this area is rich in the musical heritage of the blues. And this is what inspired my body of work now internationally recognized as A Cast of Blues. I have met and life-cast the faces of nearly sixty musicians, including Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter, Bobby Bland, Willie King, Koko Taylor, Hubert Sumlin, Robert Lockwood Junior, Bobby Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Honeyboy Edwards, R L Burnside, and Ruth Brown.
Now, I think it is time for this work to be documented in a beautiful coffee table book. I want to print images of life-casts and bios in the book, but also what I feel is important to share with a wider audience are my personal stories of this long journey - a journey that has taken 14 years thus far. These vignettes of my experiences casting the artists are unique to those already published. The art photography of the life-casts will be stunning and dramatic; the biographies informative; the video feature via a QR Code exciting. The stories are deeply moving - some really funny that add to the spirit evident in the masks. The book will measure 12” x 12” with a heavy white dust jacket with an embossed image of one of the masks and the title in Braille. There will not be any printed text on the front to detract from these tactile elements. As Bo Diddley once sang, "You can't judge a book by looking at the cover". It will be about 200 heavy matte pages. This project is well into early stages of development and design. The book will be marketed and distributed by the publisher; at bookstores; on Amazon.com, and available to museums and venues hosting exhibitions of the collection.
There are three permanent collections on exhibit in the United States and Europe: Willie Dixon’s Blues Heaven Foundation (the site of Chess Records in Chicago); the Delta Center for Culture and Learning in the Ewing Education Building at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi; and the Blues Passions Festival in Cognac, France. In 2015, the exhibit at Delta State will move to another location on the campus, to the Grammy Museum Mississippi. U.S. tours are being offered through Exhibits USA and Cognac Blues Passions Festival has tours now available and promoted internationally. In fact, the exhibit will be in Cahors, France this summer for the 23rd Anniversary of their festival, and the placement of the second Blues Trail Marker in Europe!
This is a rare opportunity for you to be a part of preserving Blues history. If you love Blues music, art, photography, documentary film, or the humanities, this project is for you!

There will be several levels at which to participate. Each level will have high quality reward gifts with the best value for your contribution. Remember, Kickstarter efforts are all or nothing and without your help this book may never see the light day. If you are unable to donate, you still can help by sharing it with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, or by email. The more people who know about it the better chances I have of meeting my goal. In the event I am successful, the book will be published by Nautilus Publishing in Oxford, Mississippi.
STRETCH GOAL: If this project is overfunded, I will be able to produce a collector's edition of the book, with the image embossed on the cover and on a heavy slipcover slide-in box.
A special thanks to Kickstarter for providing the platform for creative projects. Thanks again for visiting, and I hope to be sending you some reward gifts soon! - Very truly yours, Sharon
