About this project
We have enjoyed reading independent newspapers for many years. During our travels around the US, we have had the opportunity to devour many such publications. So, time now to start our own. Surrounded by a number of engaging writers, artists and talented outdoor folk, all the pieces are falling into place! So excited I can hardly breathe!
We often hear "print is dead". In some locations certainly, but here in rural Montana, our weekly papers live on, vibrantly. These papers arrive in remote mailboxes reachable only by horseback, four wheeler or snowshoes. We depend on this particular news source to inform, entertain and keep us in touch with far away friends and neighbors.
This publication will work closely with local writers, schools and businesses to give a voice to our rural but still relevant population. We'll build an online version as well; utilizing all the wonderful tools available in this modern world.
Who doesn't love curling up in front of the fire with a hot cup of coffee and a great read? Or, as the season dictates, an ice cold lemonade in the hammock.
Risks and challenges
BIG challenges lay before us, no doubt about that. We will primarily serve the Missouri River corridor from Wolf Creek north to Great Falls. Several post offices will deliver directly. We will also offer newspapers for sale in local businesses; these copies will be hand delivered. Advertisers will be approached in the next month; we have several businesses ready to purchase ads in our first issue. Our local schools will be an important part of our newspaper as well.Content is a real concern as we are receiving so many great ideas and columns from talented contributors. How do we edit when it is all so outstanding? Printing will be handled by a nearby city newspaper. We submit, they print, we pick up and distribute. We will be learning to use new software; our Apple computer will be put to the test; our brains as well. We are establishing a board of directors; conscientious folks helping to guide our success. As an added incentive, we will set aside 3% of our profits in a fund which will be available to Montana non-profit groups.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
