Thank you for watching the first scene of Dogs – A This War of Mine independent adaptation!
After Artyom’s brother Kolya gets shot during a nighttime raid of their shelter, Artyom sets out to find medical supplies that will save Kolya’s life. While on his mission he faces opportunistic marauders and fellow survivors, and has to accept that there are no right choices in war; there is only survival.
Dogs is inspired by 11bit Studio’s critically acclaimed game This War of Mine, which depicts war as experienced by civilians, not soldiers. Check out thiswarofmine.com to learn more about it. (Available on Steam, Apple Store, and Google Play)
We are a team of filmmakers and passionate gamers that believe video game adaptations can be better. This War of Mine is a shining example of sophisticated storytelling in an interactive medium, and it deserves a film adaptation that appropriately transfers its serious message to the big screen.
After consulting with a survivor of the Bosnian civil war, we spent months writing and refining a script that does just that. In fact, 11Bit Studios saw the potential of our project and gave us the green light to make this independent adaption.
WHO WE ARE
Our crew consists of seasoned veterans of the Vancouver film industry that have worked on recent Hollywood blockbusters such as Deadpool and War for the Planet of the Apes, as well as notable TV shows such as Bates Motel, The Man in the High Castle, The Flash, and Prison Break.
An emerging filmmaker from Hamburg, Germany, Marco has been in Vancouver for three years working as an editor for television. In addition to his freelance editing work, he's worked as a Director of Photography for several short films and webseries.
Larissa has produced several short films and music videos, and has worked in many crew positions on television shows such as The Flash, Prison Break, and Fargo. Also an actor, she had a lead role in the award winning web series One Hit Die. In addition to producing Dogs, she will be playing the role of Ana, a survivor that Artyom finds on his search for supplies.
Playing the role of Artyom, Justin has appeared on CW's iZombie and ABC's Motive. He was nominated for a Leo award in 2013 for his performance in the web series The Last Fall of Ashes, also winning an Outstanding Achievement Award for Lead Actor at LA Webfest in 2013 for the same role.
After moving to Vancouver from Russia in 2011, Tatyana has had roles on popular shows like CW's Supernatural and The Flash, and FOX's Minority Report and Backstrom. She will be playing Mara, a journalist who lives with Artyom in their make-shift shelter.
Chad has worked as a stunt performer on big budget features like War for the Planet of the Apes and Deadpool, in addition to being the stunt co-ordinator for the action-comedy short Ghost Unit. He will be bringing 10 years of stunt experience to Dogs to make sure that our stunts are safe but believable.
Since Dogs is set during a civil war somewhere in Europe, the locations are very specific. These perfect locations need to be scouted from the Vancouver area, then dressed to look like a war zone.
Dogs also has a lot of stunts, which requires insurance to make sure our cast & stunt crew are protected in case of an accident.
Production design includes all of the costumes, props, and special effects make-up and other things seen on camera. Having the money to spend in this department will make Dogs look and feel more realistic.
For four days of filming, we'll need to rent the lights and other equipment necessary for making the shot look perfect.
Once principal photography is completed, we move into post-production, which requires professional colour correction, sound design, and score composition.
The remaining money will be used for KickStarter perks & distribution, transportation costs, and other related production costs.
Campaign: Raise funds.
Pre-production: This includes securing locations, acquiring costumes & props, casting, rehearsals, stunt choreography, and more.
Production: All our hard work will finally be put into action. Keep an eye out for behind the scenes pictures.
Post-production: Editing, colour correction, composition, sound mix, and VFX.
Perk Distribution: Pledgers will be receiving their personalized perks, and Dogs will be submitted to film festivals around the world.
Public Release: a video link of the finished product will be posted for the general public.
WHY SUPPORT US?
Dogs is a story with a universal theme that needs to be shared as much as possible. In countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Uganda, D.R. of Congo, and many more, too many civilians are being forgotten in the chaos of war. By supporting Dogs, you are helping raise awareness for the dangers of civilian life in a war zone.
Thank you for donating and sharing, and we can't wait to share our story with you!
Risks and challenges
Dogs is a large and ambitious project. The 15 page script is full of stunts and special effects, so getting everything shot in just 4 days is going to be a challenge.
Fortunately, we’ve already shot the first 3 pages (the teaser you just watched is the first scene), and our crew is used to working on big Hollywood sets like Deadpool, War for the Planet of the Apes, and TV shows like Bates Motel and The Flash. These professional technicians will help us meet our day with the best quality work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
