Who says you can't learn something new? Who says you can't think about a career change before actually changing careers? Who says you need to spend $20,000 for pastry school to learn how to make cakes? That's what we have the internet for! I'm embarking on a year long learning experience to teach myself to make beautiful and delicious cakes and other desserts.
A few years ago, I decided out of the blue to make a wedding cake for my friends wedding. I had never made one before but I decided that I could do it. The cake was lovely and I used lots of ribbon and flowers to cover up any imperfection in the cake. After that, I was hooked. I've been baking and trying to perfect the art of cake decoration ever since.
But I have a lot of learning to do and this is where 52Cakes.com comes in. I've decided that I need practice. Lots and lots of practice. So in this modern age of 365 projects and Thing a week projects I figured the best way to practice was to do it publicly so I'm beholden to a large group of people on the internet...YOU.
Every week for the next year I will be making a cake, cake pops, cupcakes, cookies...anything creative and pastry related. The majority of these will be 6" cakes but who knows! One week I might try my hand at chocolate bon bons! I'd like to try to perfect a new technique each week or try something I've been wanting to attempt for a while. I will post a photo of the finished product every week with a little description and maybe some pictures of my process.
Not every cake will be a success but that's what practice is all about right?
As some of you know, cakes are expensive to make. And this is where you come in. Help me purchase supplies for my cake practice! Hit a certain level and you'll even get a cake of your very own. Mouth watering yet?
