What is the Shift:R for Pinion Project?
If you are riding (or considering) a Pinion equipped bike, your ONLY shifter options have been the rotary shifters provided by Pinion.... until we at Cinq decided to do something about it.
The Cinq Shift:R for Pinion project showcases two new bicycle shifting systems designed for use with Pinion gearbox drivetrains. The Shift:R Road for Pinion provides improved performance and ergonomics for drop-bar bikes, while the Shift:R Tour for Pinion does the same for flat-bar equipped bicycles.
Let's illustrate this with a few examples:
Previously, on a Pinion drop-bar bike like this...
You had to shift with one of these rotary style shifters ...awkwardly placed or with special handlebars.
But with the Shift:R Road for Pinion you have performance at your fingertips:
And on a flat-bar bike like this:
You can replace the rotary shifter ...
With the Cinq Shift:R Tour for Pinion thumb shifters:
Why do we need new shifters?
As you can see, while rotary shifters are a great fit for the gearbox technology, they present are a compromise in ergonomics and performance when used with road bike style drop-bars, or in mountain bike or flat-bar use.
We believe that every type of bicycle, from road bikes, gravel bikes, commuter bikes, touring bikes, to mountain bikes can make the most of the Pinion gearbox when paired with shifters that are the best fit for the bike, rider, and terrain. Our Shift:R systems offer improved ergonomics, superb shifting performance, and represent the future of bicycle shifting technology.
What is the Shift:R Road for Pinion?
The Shift:R Road for Pinion is an ergonomic, high-performance shifter and hydraulic disc brake system for drop-bar bikes (road, gravel, commuter, touring, etc) which works with a Pinion gearbox. Actuate the right shifter to move to a harder gear, and the left to shift to an easier gear, or vice versa.
These shifters are perfectly integrated with TRP Hylex hydraulic disc brakes and are for use with the Pinion C-line gearboxes (6-, 9- and 12-speed). They can be an upgrade to replace your existing rotary shifter, brake levers and disc calipers, or used in a new bike build.
Have a look at our prototype Shift:R Road for Pinion in action below. See the single and double-gear shift action - what you hear is the stainless steel ratcheting mechanism working in the CNC-machined aluminum Shift:R Box:
- Simultaneous shifting and braking

Background: Who is Cinq?
Cinq is a young brand, born from the desire to develop products which fill niche, yet very significant gaps in the cycling component marketplace. We started as the house brand for bicycle manufacturer Tout Terrain, but quickly realized that our components had a wider appeal and deserved a bigger audience than as OEM components on a single bike brand.
Cinq was launched taking over our first product from Tout Terrain, "The Plug", which was one of the first Dynamo-USB power supplies on the market. (This was also sold under the Supernova brand). We have since continued development of that product line and expanded into shifting technology, carbon forks and a small accessory line.
Tell me more about Pinion!
Pinion are a German manufacturer who make the most widely adopted, reliable and high performance bicycle gearbox (transmission) on the market. The idea behind the Pinion central gearbox was born in the gearbox development centre of Porsche in Weissach. As budding engineers and mountain biking enthusiasts, Pinion were driven by to develop a bicycle transmission that was as intuitive to use as a sports car, with the same high precision and low wear. The Original Shift:R Project
In 2015 we brought the Shift:R Tour for Rohloff (originally just called the Shift:R) trigger shifter to market. While our designers appreciated the simplicity and functionality of the standard Rohloff pull-pull twist shifter design, we (and the cycling community) were asking for the freedom to choose a trigger / thumb style shifters.
The design concept on the Shift:R Tour for Rohloff was to build a ratcheting mechanism at the Speedhub interface that allowed you to use thumb actuated shifters on each side of the bar: Left to move to an easier gear, right to move to a harder gear, or vice versa.
We soon brought the Shift:R Tour for Rohloff to market in diameters that allowed mounting to both standard flat-bars (22.2mm) and drop bars (31.8mm) - the latter allowing you to use the thumb shifters on the top section of road handlebars.
In the meantime, Tout Terrain was selling more and more Pinion gearbox equipped bicycles, and we were fielding countless questions from users about whether we could make a similar shifter solution for the Pinion P1.18. Unfortunately, the design of the P-Line gearbox housing made our job difficult, and the prospect of building our shifters into this series was deemed unfeasible.
Everything changed in 2017 when Pinion released their C-Line of gearboxes. With their new compact gearbox housing design, the shift mechanism was much more accessible and we quickly realized the possibility of developing a Shift:R Box was real. Development started right away.
The Shift:R Road for Rohloff
While we worked on the Pinion engineering challenges, we also brought the next Cinq product to market - the Shift:R Road for Rohloff, which was developed as a new shifter interface to work with our existing Rohloff Shift:R Box - operating in the same way as the existing Tour shifters, but using a custom shift lever integrated a hydraulic braking system. We went through various prototypes and extensive testing, and finally we were able to work directly with TRP to volume produce our shifter-brake levers and assemble them with their superb TRP Hylex brake system. In early 2019 we brought the Shift:R Road for Rohloff to market:
Will these shifters work with Pinion?
As our Pinion Shift:R Box development continued, we confirmed that the Shift:R Road levers are fully compatible with the Pinion Shift:R Box, making our go-to-market easier. Likewise, the Shift:R Tour levers, now entering their second generation, are also fully compatible. With these two major design and manufacturing challenges taken care of, all attention turned to the Shift:R box required for the Pinion gearbox.
The Shift:R Box for Pinion
In 2017 we had already shown our early prototypes, even appearing at the North American Handmade Bicycle (NAHBS) Show that year.
Our biggest design challenge was to adapt the same mechanical principles of the Rohloff version of the Shift:R Box, and engineer the equivalent system to work with the Pinion C-Line gearboxes.
March 2019: Ready for Production
And this brings us to today:

This product has been a long time coming, and we want to launch it with a bang. This is Cinq's biggest project yet, and while we still work hand-in-hand with Tout Terrain, we want to stand on our own two feet, build our brand, and work with consumers, retailers, framebuilders and OEM's and to bring these and future products to market. We have chosen Kickstarter to help tell the Shift:R for Pinion story, and to get a sense of the demand while build up our initial production run. By producing more shifters in a single larger batch, we can fulfill the first orders more quickly than we could staggering multiple, smaller production runs which increases the risk of delays. And there is no need to sugar coat it - the bigger our initial order, the better standing we have with our production partners. We want to get as many Shift:R's into the hands of riders as efficiently as possible and show the world what we can do!
Becoming a backer means you will be one of the first to receive a Shift:R system, well before they are available through standard orders (outside of Kickstarter). You also take advantage of our great rewards, and get to be part of the "shift" in bicycle shifting technology.
Our Industry Partners:
We have always had a great relationship with Pinion, and have gotten their feedback throughout the development process. As a result, the Shift:R Road has earned the official "Pinion Certified Product" designation:

Finally, some details about our other rewards:
Risks and challenges
We are doing our best to keep risk low. From a product perspective, we think we are in a great position:
- Our component manufacturers are ready take our orders and prepared for our initial order volume
- We have sufficient staff in-house for final assembly and packaging
- We have limited kickstarter quantities in our campaign to ensure we do not over-extend our production capacity
- We are well experienced in the logistics and fulfillment process
Our biggest risk is the reliance on our mass-production partners to fulfill our individual component orders. As a small manufacturer, it can be a challenge to stay at the top of the production queue at some of these larger factories. To minimize this risk, we have already started stock-piling individual components and putting them aside for kickstarter orders, but we cannot do this for all components.
The second risk is that we are still finalizing details such as packaging and manuals which are an important part of the end-user experience. Overall we feel this risk is minimal, as all of the work has been scheduled with our staff who will complete these tasks well before product ship dates.
Thank you considering becoming a backer!
