- The world of Freja and the False Prophecy
Experience the tale of a shield-maiden's journey: a tale of betrayal, overcoming adversity, and ultimately, self discovery. Take on the role of the fallible heroine Freja, troubled by a brutal past and thrust into the harsh unknown, as you traverse through the Nine Realms of Yggdrasil in search of answers and redemption.
We have a small area of Freja and the False Prophecy available for you to play! You can download the demo here:
It is best experienced with a controller if you have one. This demo was built to show the potential of Freja and the False Prophecy. It does not represent the length, features and ultimate quality of the final product. The game is currently in pre-alpha stage.
Their strings tug, our motions pre-orchestrated. Fate or free will? Does it matter? Can you rise and forge your own fate?
Returning from a raid at sea, a sudden massive storm casts Freja’s ship upon the rocks. Washing ashore, the sole survivor, she soon discovers all is not as it seems. A great malady has gripped the land and the gods may have a part in it. With the tragedy of lost comrades and a sunken bounty behind her, she sets off to uncover the truth.
Freja will not make it through the journey unscathed. As you uncover the mystery and piece together the prophecy, you'll progress Freja's character and unlock powerful abilities to break the chains that bind you to the gods.
Along the way, you'll meet a variety of interesting and diverse characters which will either help, hinder or provide some well earned comic relief.
A traveler and wanderer with a large ego and even larger sword, Stigandr comes from a land that was ravaged by a great famine many moons ago. Freja encounters him at various points in her adventure and they forge a strong bond of kinship.
A cheeky bard who promises to sing Freja's saga for a thousand years. Quirky and with a sense of humour, you'll always be on the lookout for the next opportunity to exchange some friendly banter.
We're keeping them secret for now. They're not big on photographs. Suffice to say, they'll have a strong presence in the game.
Much of the story will be told through cinematics. Watch Freja’s encounter with a pack of vargr (Norse wolves) in our Cinematic Teaser Trailer:
The giant ash tree Yggdrasil connects the Nine Realms and Freja’s adventure will take you through them all. Each is a unique and richly crafted environment populated with it’s own obstacles and challenges as well as a host of nefarious creatures determined to cut you down in your tracks.
The worlds you'll battle through in our saga:
Midgard: Home of the Humans. Surrounded by the all encompassing sea serpent, Jörmungandr, Midgard is a land of mountains, valleys, rivers and oceans, a land that Freja calls home.
- Niflheim: The World of Fog and Mist. Darkest and coldest of the Nine Realms, Niflheim is a barren and icy wasteland.
- Muspelheim: The Land of Fire is a burning hot place, filled with lava, flames, and soot.
- Asgard: The home of the Aesir. A divine and orderly realm. This domain of the gods is ruled by Odin and his wife, Frigg. Home to the great halls Valhalla and the meadow of Fólkvangr, where fallen Vikings will go for the afterlife.
- Jotunheim: Home of the Giants, the sworn enemies of the Aesir. Jotunheim consists mostly of rocks, wilderness, and dense forests.
- Vanaheim: Home of the Vanir. The Vanir are masters of sorcery and magic, renowned for their ability to foretell the future.
- Alfheim: Home of the Light Elves, luminous and mysterious creatures. Some say they are more beautiful than the sun.
- Svartalfheim: Home of the Dwarves. Master crafters and hoarders of wealth, the dwarves live under the mountains, inhabiting caves and subterranean tunnels.
- Helheim: Home of the dishonorable dead. A cold and lifeless place ruled by Loki's fearsome daughter, Hel, and guarded from trespassers by a monstrous hound.

The core gameplay features of Freja and the False Prophecy are:
- Character Progression: Unlock awesome abilities, warcries and rune stones.
- Battle: Diverse enemies and challenging boss encounters punctuate the nine realms. You'll have to rely on your wits and abilities to defeat them.
- Tight Controls: Responsive and engaging controls that give you full control over Freja and her array of abilities and acrobatics.
- Explore: A meticulously crafted world with multiple paths and secret areas to discover.

- Or not... A Story Mode option for those who would like to experience the tale of Freja without the combat or platforming challenge.
They say a hero is not born, but forged in the fires of adversity and sorrow.
As Freja evolves into a fearsome heroine you will unlock new attacks, powers and devastating warcries worthy of waging war with the gods.
You're stronger than you could ever dream of. Find your strength.
Navigating the Nine Realms successfully will require you to master Freja’s combination of attacks, abilities and defensive maneuvers. You'll need them all to prevent Freja getting squished by a frost giant or falling prey to a nasty forest troll.
Our initial goal is to launch on PC and subsequently port the game to the following platforms if we reach their respective stretch goals:
- Xbox One
To craft a world of infinite complexity, depth and beauty... that is the mark of a god!
In an age of super slick 3D graphics and high definition realistic CGI, Freja and the False Prophecy instead chooses to look to the beautiful 2D animation of years past and bring it back in a fresh way. Each character, environment and object in the world is hand drawn, beautifully depicted in the captivating and provocative art style of our creative director, Romy Latter, bringing the old Norse Myths to life in a way that you’ve never seen them before.
Let the bards sing tales of your heroism, or your cowardice.
Our score will be composed by the talented South African artist Martinique du Toit. Martinique started playing piano at the age of five and writing music at the age of ten. Since then she has been involved in numerous creative projects and bands.
Martinique is a trained classical musician who has mastered the ability to cast off the rigid rules she so diligently learned in order to write original melodies filled with depth and creativity.
Some samples from our in-game soundtrack:
Martinique's unique talents will lend itself to creating a memorable, wistful and unique soundtrack.
Sound design will be done by Andrew Hoole and Greg Abrahams of The Sound Foundry. Both are composition graduates of the South African College of Music at UCT, and have been composing together for the last few years. They have collaborated on several short film scores, music for television commercials, as well as the feature films Adventures of Zambezia and Khumba. They are also both active performers in the South African music industry and composed the score and sound effects for the games Flash Point:Fire Rescue and Polygod.

Here at Unsigned Double we're inspired by the giants of gaming that came before us. We're hoping to take some incredible mechanics and ideas from great games such as Ori and the Blind Forest, Salt and Sanctuary, Hollow Knight, Cuphead and Dark Souls and amalgamate them into a cohesive experience incorporating our vision of the Norse myths and the worlds and characters that embody them.
If you enjoyed any of these games, we're sure you'll enjoy our game too!
Provide us with your favourite photograph and we'll turn you into an NPC. We'll work together to create your character's: story-line, dialog, where you appear in the game and how you fit into the global story-line & narrative. We'll have a character that looks like you in our game! Awesome!
“Game development is hard.” - Everyone, ever.
Freja and the False Prophecy has been developed by a small group of dedicated individuals working on it part-time and entirely self funded out of our own pockets. While our day jobs keep the rent paid and food in our fridges, countless hours during evenings and weekends have been dedicating to crafting and realising Freja’s journey and the Realms of Yggdrasil. That development includes crafting assets, animations, scripting game mechanics, abilities, enemy AI and behaviour, visual effects, sound design, music, level design, narrative, marketing and the other hundred and one things that go into making a game. Nobody ever said game development is easy.
This is where Kickstarter comes in. We’re in the early stages of development with a long road ahead. The Kickstarter target won’t fund us to the point that we can quit our full time jobs and only work on Freja for the next two years. We are actively pursuing other means of funding. What it will do is cover some of our costs (music, animation, sound effects, and some of the writing and development), but more importantly, it’s a way for us to reach an audience! Through this campaign we hope to introduce you to our game, our team, and to prove that there are others like us who want to see this project realised. We’re inviting you to not only back us, but come with for the ride of making this game and putting something beautiful into the world. Kickstarter is the platform that we’re using to present our game to the world, show that it is something that excites, and invite you to take the next steps with us.
Every contribution, small, large, or even just sharing the campaign, brings us closer to the dream of making this a reality and closer to us delivering a unique and beautiful gaming experience to you.
How we'll put your contributions to use
Whatever contribution you make, we'll endeavor to use it wisely, responsibly and with due diligence. We'll be using the majority of the funds we receive to finance the following areas:

Risks and challenges
We're a small team working on our first title. It's scary and we don't expect the road to be easy. Like Freja's journey, the challenges ahead are fraught with danger and adversity. However, like our heroine, we believe we have the necessary determination and conviction to conquer them. Everybody starts somewhere and we're inviting you to join us on our journey, and help us achieve our dreams.
Although our team lacks experience developing and shipping games, we do have fierce tenacity, work ethic and many years of experience in the related fields of software and web development, animation, film and visual effects to draw from. We're also not afraid of outsourcing and asking for advice and assistance from professionals who've been in the business when we get stuck or need help.
We know that there is a risk involved in backing a game (or any project on Kickstarter) but we're committed to be transparent with our progress, hard-working, and to put in the many many many hours required to make something truly awesome and memorable. This is just the beginning for Unsigned Double and we'd love for you to be a part of our greater journey, not only for Freja and The False Prophecy, but also to empower us to make even more incredible games in the future.
