Protean Roleplaying System is a simple, intuitive set of 'game rules' designed with a strong emphasis on three central tenets:
Easy - The system is designed to be as simple as possible to use, perfect for 'pick up and play' sessions or as an introduction to PnP games. The rules are streamlined and entirely player-based, allowing the GM to shine as a storyteller rather than as a walking compendium of rules.
Resource-Free - All you need to play a Protean Roleplaying Game is the Guidebook, paper, a pen, and 'Ability Cards', which could be anything from actual cards to coins; after character creation, the players don't need the Guidebook, and the GM requires only one simple chart (and in some Sets, not even that!)
Flexible - The system can be used in any story setting, with wide-reaching mechanics that can apply to High Fantasy, Cyberpunk, Superhero, or any other gameworld the GM wants to create! With an adjustable Ability setting, the characters can be anything from normal people to Wizards or Superheroes (and can even transition from powerless to incredible during a campaign).
Protean Roleplaying System operates on three core mechanics; Stats, Traits and Abilities, which can be used to create any character imaginable. Further, these mechanics can be altered using pre-made 'Sets', such as Bolo, which simplifies it even further so it can be played anywhere with no prep at all, Sisyphus, which is perfect for low-magic games, and Magnate, which expands on the Ability system to allow for high magic/tech games replete with special actions.
Should we reach our goal, the Protean Roleplaying System Guidebook will include Sisyphus as the basic system alongside rules for Bolo and Magnate. It will include five pre-made worlds, each from a radically different genre, to be used directly or as inspiration by the GM, as well as a single fully-made gaming session from each world. It will include nine example characters, three from each Set, with excerpts from games featuring those characters to give players an idea of what they can do in the game world. Finally, it will include a deck of laminated Cards, to be used as Ability Cards in Sisyphus or in Magnate (they will have a variety of colours to be used by the more in-depth Magnate Ability System).
Risks and challenges
