Jonathan Togo stars in a film about a funeral, sex, and the wrong love affair - and how the thing you can't do can make it all right.

THANK YOU!!! We made our goal!

I am so grateful...

We have 3 days left on Kickstarter - if you would still like to give, we can still use your donations! I promise we will use it to make the film the best we can.

What It’s About

“and Lily” is a film about a funeral. And a girl who goes there, not to say goodbye, but to find answers to questions no one wants to ask. A man dies very young. No one knows why. His friends, who barely knew him, have a party to say goodbye. And his girlfriend, who didn’t love him, comes to meet them. But the real reason she comes is to look for someone else, someone she knew a long time ago. She finds him. But the only way she can get to him is  through this funeral/party, where there are drunk sad bitter crazy weird people  everywhere she goes. And loud music. And potato chips. And some sex. And a lot to figure out about who this dead boy really was. And who she really is. And how, even though it seems like everyone and everything – including a four inch plastic action figure- is blocking her at every turn, to find love and grab onto it.

What It’s Really About

being young and being stuck and confused by the way the world is. Still being dazed by the crazy things around you before you get used to them.

when I was in my 20's and some of my friends died so young, none of us knew how the dying thing was supposed to go. Getting dressed for the first funeral, I thought about the guy I had a crush on, and wondered if I could put on lipstick- did it seem like I cared less if I did? Did you have to be sad all the time - or could I think about the music and the food, or how nice it was to be held, even though I didn’t really know her enough to cry. And how come, even though I hadn’t talked to him in a year, I stayed up all night when I got the phone call, and felt like he was next to me, or in the trees, for the longest time.

it’s also about hope. Maybe unrealistic. But maybe not. That for all the times we are totally stuck in life – burned out, tired, frozen, unsure which way to go, or even if there is any other way, alone, hungry, and weighed down by all the times we’ve already been this way and all the things we’ve tried and couldn’t do – there is a way to get out of it. A way to get somewhere new, free, do everything and be everything, the way we really saw ourselves, before… one thing. We just have to find it.

in our film there are people who are stuck and broken and can’t see their way out of it. And one person who can. She sees what she has to do to be happy. Everyone and everything tells her not to do it, it's wrong, it's immoral, it's weird. But she’s my hero because she does it anyway.

Us

James Westby (director). A ton of funny and uncomfortably genuine films to his credit, including “Rid of Me,” (Tribeca 2011) which the NY Times called “an ingenious black comedy,” “Film Geek,” which Entertainment Weekly called “perceptively hilarious,” and “The Auteur.”

Jonathan Togo (actor). Best known for playing lead character Ryan Wolfe on the long running CBS show "CSI:Miami." Also acted in films "Mystic River" opposite Clint Eastwood, and the upcoming "Identical." And many roles on TV  including "Judging Amy" and "Special Unit 2."

Darcy Miller (writer/actor). Past films like “Morris County ( “a tour de force perfomance" - Fangoria); also “Girl With Yellow Scarf," and the evil villain in the comic book comedy, “Good Rules for Badguys.” Scripts include the co-adaptation of a book by award-winning author Edwidge Danticat (Sundance Lab finalist).

Anna Bishop: Great musical theatre talent as well as film talent, Anna has acted in numerous plays including "Ragtime" at Portland Center Stage, which got her rave reviews ("extremely strong... especially for a ten year old" - On Portland).

Jan Brehm: Recognizable from TV and film, as well as almost 200 national commericals and 1400 (!) regional commercials. Several movies for NBC and Lifetime, as well as "Grimm" and "Leverage."

Orianna Herrman (actor). Lots of TV and film, including "Grimm," "Leverage," and James Westby’s "Rid of Me." Orianna is also lead singer of the electro-pop group “Oracle.”

Dustin Rush: Lots of film work including the upcoming comedies "City Baby," "Marco Polo" and "The Walter Curtain Chronicles."

And lots of other great cast and crew we don’t have room to mention here…

Money, an artist's favorite topic...

wish I could raise a lot of money and give it to some of the organizations I've learned about during this film and over the years that help children and young people who are living in poverty or grief.

but i can't do that on Kickstarter. And truthfully, my best hope is that film really can do big things in the world. Help us communicate. Help us feel. Help us reach each other.

we need $11,000 to finish this film. We got to shoot the film with a cast and crew that worked far below their usual rates, but still put everything into it. (For example, my co-producer worked at the very high rate of "pay me when you can.")

we need to pay her salary. And our editor (who is also our director, James Westby).

we need to pay for color correction and sound mixing.

we need to pay our designer (who has also worked for free)

we need to pay our music composer (some of our favorite bands want to do it, but even they can't afford to do it for free)

and we need to pay to submit it to festivals.(there's a fee for every one you submit it to.)  Film can make a big impact, but only if more than our friends and family watch it, no matter how much it means to them.

Questions and Some Answers

we chose to do a campaign on Kickstarter because there are great projects on here that people have put a lot of thought and effort into. we have too.

but the way Kickstarter works and keeps those reputable projects going is that it's all or nothing. either we make $11,000 (or more) - or we don't get to keep any of what we've raised.

we can also make over this goal. if we do, we will be able to put all that money toward post-production fees. Which inevitably get bigger, no matter how well you budget. Really great quality color correction, and sound mixing. More festivals to play in. Promotion and marketing so we can get our film out there.

if you give anything over $10, we will send you some stuff to say thank you. (you can check out our incentives on the right). Or you can give it as a gift, and we can send the rewards to anyone you'd like to have them.

UPDATE.... Nov 27!!

Here's TWO "Behind the Scenes" Videos  -

If you didn't catch this one on our FB page, wanted to make sure you got a look - here's Jonathan goofing (and serious) behind the scenes...

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

we already got to shoot the film. So I know we're set with beautiful performances from a cast that really loved their characters, and a crew that made our film sound and look just the way I envisioned it. Now the challenge is in the difference between making something good or something great.

signing on one of the bands that are interested to score this film is one of our biggest challenges right now. I think the right music is vital to linking us inside to what's going on outside (on the screen).

and scheduling... all our great post-production talent - James Westby, our editor - and the great color and sound people here - are busy (gratefully). but we'll need to give them enough money and care to snag enough of their time, and coordinate so we can get a final cut soon.
