Union Square NYC. Boogiee and the Raiders of Concrete
A groundbreaking book about the leader of a successful mostly male dance crew in NY who is a young ambitious woman.
I want to make a book and a short movie about Boogiee and the group she founded last year with two dear friends. They called themselves ROC.
In these images and her words you will find a point of view on what it means to be black, the art and total discipline it takes to dance, street culture, LGBTQ issues, spirituality, toughness, loyalty, family, education, humor and dephth. In my printed words you will find my amazement, and the emotion I felt - as a woman living most of my adult life as foreigner in a metropolis - when I connected to this meravigliosa creatura, who comes across as womanly and manly, adult and child, young and wise, curious about life and also experienced beyond her years.
Her story is particular and takes place in one square in one city, but it spans universal themes anyone can relate to: the burning desire of youth - when your whole life is ahead of you and how you dream the things you want, when everything is possible even though there are challenges. Yes, hers have been extreme: she has experienced racism, abuse, harassment, discrimination, homelessness, being abandoned.
At a young age she also has experienced real love, tight friendships, the joy in being able to fully express one's feelings, the privilege of growing a child, and, as far as I am concerned, the courage it takes to fully trust another. In various realms, she has been my teacher.
Boogiee has the courage and mental clarity and determination to presents herself to me without barriers, with curiosity and candor.
The Book: In December 2015, subject to the success of this Kickstarter campaign, Francesca will publish a collection of images as a hard-cover photography book. She thinks these photographs have something powerful to say about human connection and its correlation with art, music, and the street. As one of the dancers told her "with an actual object you are able to tell things words alone cannot express".
This book will display over 150 rich color and black and white photographs from performances and intimate moments around New York City.
In seeking support to make the book possible, she wants to ask you to help her.
The book will acknowledge the names of all the people who help make the book possible by supporting this Kickstarter campaign as per the pledges.

Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges when publishing a photobook include the possibility of delay, but Francesca and the publisher she will be working with are highly experienced at dealing with the production and printing challenges involved in making great photo books. If this campaign is successful, we will do everything possible to make sure the book is published in December 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
