The Problem - Jewelry's Dirty Little Secret?
Ask yourself when was the last time you cleaned your jewelry? One month ago, six months ago, over a year? It’s ok; don’t feel bad, it’s not convenient to stop by a jewelry store on a regular basis to have your jewelry cleaned. Yet, for over the past 32 years, 95% of the jewelry that comes into my store looks like this.
Assorted jewelry from my customers!
I’m David Bellman; over the past 3 decades I’ve owned one of the most successful jewelry stores in New Hampshire, and I have seen a lot of jewelry. Whether a customer comes in for a repair, appraisal or inspection, and regardless of their jewelry’s value - they all virtually have one thing in common - they are filthy!!
Looking at the items that would come into my store under magnification showed just how filthy they were. And most people really just don't realize how dirty so we went to a local trade show and set up a both:
This discovery fueled my passion to pioneer a new area of study called Jewelry Hygiene. While few people know about this problem; I was sure… that if they did, they would care enough about it to do something about it…as long as I could easily incorporate into their hygiene regimen. I was determined to find a solution.
The Solution - The AquaSonic Wave
Using patent pending technology developed by industry leading engineering design firm DEKA, the AquaSonic Wave is the world’s first jewelry sanitizing system that harnesses the cleaning power of your dishwasher to clean all the dirt and grime off your jewelry. The cleaner uses stainless steel plates to aerate the water streams from your dishwasher into a fine mist creating a spa like atmosphere inside the protected compartment. This “Spa Effect” gently cleans and disinfects jewelry while the dishwasher runs through its normal cycle. The “Spa Effect” is so gentle you can safely clean your jewelry every time you run your dishwasher.
Developed by GIA Graduate Gemologist David Bellman (that's me) and world renowned engineer Dean Kamen, the AquaSonic Wave allows you to clean your jewelry in the safety and convenience of your home.
To maintain optimal Jewelry Hygiene, it is recommended using the AquaSonic Wave every two weeks.

The Jewelry Hygiene Revolution has been!
The jewelry industry really knows just how dirty jewelry can get and we’ve had 2 great articles from industry trade publications. Here are the links:
The word is getting out. Our story was picked up by 238 sources across the country including:
I was very fortunate when in 2011 the Dean Kamen agreed to help me design the product I had envisioned. Dean has always been great with his focus on helping humanity with his inventions, but what some people don't know is he also always supported local small business owners and entrepreneurs like myself. I am truly grateful for all the support from Dean and the entire team at DEKA!
How the Funds Will Be Used
The funds raised will go towards completion of the manufacturing mold, purchasing of raw materials, production, and shipping. We have finalized the design, qualified and selected our manufacturer, and have even completed basic tooling. Production will begin in November.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have gone through the process: engineering design, 3D printed prototype, functional prototype and now we need to bring the AquaSonic wave to production. Your contributions will go to completing that process. Working with the expert guidance of DEKA and some of the foremost materials experts in the world, we feel we are fully able to meet our commitments to our contributors and then bring the product to market. While we feel like we have reduced the risk as much as possible, every project has certain risks. The most common risks are potential delays in creating the manufacturing mold, obtaining raw materials, packaging, and shipping.
We will make sure to give frequent updates about progress so you'll always know what's going on with the project. We feel transparency is an important part of the kickstarter process and look to uphold that value.
The AquaSonic Wave is safe for 90% of all fine jewelry. There are a few items like Pearls, Opals and Emeralds that are heat sensitive and should be washed by hand. The majority of fine jewelry is professionally cleaned using steam, hot water and a cleaning solvent. The dishwasher uses the same elements only at a lower water pressure than the professional machines.
The AquaSonic Wave has our patented surgical grade stainless steel diffuser plates, which aerates the water stream in the dishwasher creating a spa like atmosphere “The Spa Effect” inside the AquaSonic Wave compartment to safely clean your fine jewelry. Streams of water are reduced to a fine spray gently washing over your jewelry removing contaminated dirt from even the smallest hard to reach areas of your jewelry, where bacteria and gems are lurking.
Add our anti-bacterial agent and your jewelry is completely cleaned and most importantly sanitized. A complete list of approved gemstones can be found in the AquaSonic Wave’s owner’s manual.
Absolutely, one of the many advantages of using the AquaSonic Wave is you can conveniently clean your jewelry while cleaning your jewelry. This not only saves time but it conserves energy and water by sharing the cleaning process between your dishes and your jewelry. Never again will you need to hand wash your jewelry one at a time in dirty reused jar jewelry cleaning liquid. Get a fresh clean sterilized wash every time you clean your jewelry.
Yes, in fact dishwasher soap is much milder than the detergents and solvents we use to clean jewelry in the jewelry store. The reason is that glass and dishes are made of soft materials, much softer than gold, diamonds and gemstones so the dishwasher soaps need to be milder so as not to cause scratching.
No, previous versions, the AquaSonic I and AquaSonic II have been used in dishwashers for the past 20 years and it has been estimated that in that time 30,000,000 washing's have taken place. Never once have we received information that a single stone was missing or any damage was done to any item of jewelry.
The truth is, water spraying from a dishwasher on jewelry is nothing compared to the abuse our jewelry endures on a daily basis. We sometimes don’t realize how often we bang or rings and bracelets but as a jeweler I see the damage every day.
Note: Regular jewelry maintenance is still required and we suggest you continue to visit your jeweler every 6 month for routine inspections.
No, the newly redesigned locking bar mechanism covers the entire front of the AquaSonic Wave. In addition, there is a additional snap lock located in the middle of the bar which snaps in place when the lock is full engaged.
No, medical studies have shown and our own hospital study shows that washing your hands has little effect on bacteria levels on your jewelry. The dirt and grime that builds up on jewelry cannot be removed by simple soap and water, which is why jewelry hygiene™ is such a concern. In fact, soaps and creams that we use on our hands just build up over time making bacteria loads even worse.
Every two weeks, we conducted our own Pilot Study last year in one of NH’s largest hospitals where the jewelry of health care workers was tested before and after cleaning. Our research indicates that bacteria loads on jewelry could reach dangerous levels in as little as two weeks of normal wear. ATP levels were in the range of Very Dirty to Filthy.
No, dishwashers do an excellent job of washing and rinsing your dishes and glasses thoroughly and the same holds true for your jewelry. Once the anti-bacterial gel mixes with the cleaning soap in your dishwasher, all of the dirt and germs are removed completely. We have tested the bacteria loads on jewelry and dishes after washing and the results always show that all items are sanitized.
It’s easy, after you place your jewelry into the AquaSonic Wave and lock the cover you will notice a wave shaped opening running across the top of the cover. Simply pour an even continuous amount of anti-bacterial gel across the top of the Wave from one end to the other. Keeping the unit level place the AquaSonic Wave on the top rack of you dishwasher and begin your regular dishwasher cleaning cycle. During the cleaning process the anti-bacterial gel will breakdown and dissipates gradually cover the jewelry removing bacteria and viruses as the dishwasher runs.
