The film's inspiration came from an interview I read with a former army chaplain who was so traumatized by the suffering of the troops he counseled, that he began to question his faith in God and resigned. Moved by his struggle and the often overlooked toll of war on caregivers and families, I developed The Chaplain.
We are raising funds for a short which will be a tense, poignant and visually ambitious stand alone sequence featuring the chaplain and his daughter. By backing this short, which we'll enter into top tier festivals, and screen for agencies, production companies, and financiers, you are helping us attract investment in the feature.
To see what kind of award-winning work we're capable of, please check out our previous film, 1982, featured on Short of the Week:
And to learn more about how you can empower injured veterans, please take a moment to visit the Wounded Warrior Project. We are monthly supporters of this outstanding organization and hope our film will contribute to a greater awareness of the challenges wounded veterans face.
Bailey Chase, widely praised for his outstanding performance as Deputy Branch Connally in LONGMIRE, is the lead in our film.
Chase starred on A & E’s critically lauded contemporary crime thriller LONGMIRE based on the best-selling series of novels by author Craig Johnson. He portrayed Big Sky country Deputy Branch Connally; a go-getter with blind confidence whose political aspirations often trump his motivation to solve crimes.
Though Chase most recently starred on DAMAGES with Rose Byrne, he is perhaps best known for his portrayal of swaggering Detective Butch Ada on TNT’s acclaimed SAVING GRACE. Chase has since completed the thriller SUMMONED, thereby adding Cuba Gooding, Jr. to his already impressive list of Oscar-winning co-stars inclusive of Holly Hunter and Glenn Close. Next on the horizon is the lead role in the big screen adaptation of the Pulitzer prize-nominated novel TAO OF SURFING, as well as the indie dramas SEX, DEATH, & BOWLING in which he stars opposite Selma Blair, and KILL FOR ME.
We're working with some of the best in the business to make The Chaplain short a reality. Here are a couple of highlights:
FRANK BUONO - CINEMATOGRAPHER
Ever wonder who was behind many of the incredible shots in some of the most memorable blockbusters? Like the four minute car scene in Children of Men (refresh your memory here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfBSncUspBk) or the alien attacks in War of the Worlds, or James Bond jumping his motorcycle onto a speedboat in Quantum of Solace, or the train heist in Fast and the Furious 5? That would be Hollywood's most in-demand camera operator, Frank Buono, who made his transition to cinematographer on our previous short, 1982, for which he won the 2014 Emerging Cinematographer Award and will be honored at the Directors Guild of America in September. Put simply, Frank is a master of light and camera movement, and if Steven Soderbergh, Michael Bay, and Steven Spielberg rely on him to achieve their visions, we're proud to as well.
PATRICK M. SULLIVAN JR. - PRODUCTION DESIGNER
Patrick has had an extraordinary career, working not only as Clint Eastwood's sole art director for years, but also winning an Oscar as part of the art direction team on Memoirs of a Geisha, and most recently, an Emmy for his art direction of Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra. Like Frank, he takes great pride in the success of our previous collaboration, 1982, and can't wait to make The Chaplain visually spectacular.
Risks and challenges
The risks and obstacles to a short are many: tight budgets, limited time, a crowded market, but the joy of Kickstarter is that as a community, we can help each other overcome these obstacles to realize our unique visions.
Our team has been responsible for some of the most awe-inspiring movie moments in the last fifteen years, and now you can personally be part of the remarkable work they'll do on The Chaplain, not only as a fan, but as a backer.
And we have some pretty sweet rewards too! Exclusive digital pix, the short screenplay, stylish tees, and so much more. Also, please stay tuned for upcoming videos and artwork, and don't hesitate to reach out.
Every contribution brings us closer to making a thrilling short that will attract investment in the feature. Thank you for making it happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
