We are Olde Virden's Red Hot Sprinkle and we are America's new favorite condiment! We dehydrate, grind, and blend specialty peppers with a red hot kick that will change the way you add spice to your food. It's delicious and original, and we plan on taking it nationally in the next five years.
Founders Chris and Allyson Virden worked for 12 years at a back country lodge serving hikers in the Great Smoky Mountains. In 2013, while watching his employees pour hot sauce on their food, a thought occurred to Chris, "why are there so many hot sauces but so few options for dried peppers?"
If you aren't interested in cayenne pepper or chili powder, then pepper purists are left with dried red pepper flakes. A staple of every pizza joint, we've all seen those jars of dried pepper flakes parked next to the parmesan cheese. Sadly, the taste of generic crushed red pepper flakes pales in comparison to the explosion of flavor found in Olde Virden's Red Hot Sprinkle.
Chris suspected the potential of lovingly dehydrated peppers and decided to take matters into his own hands to satisfy his curiosity. Armed with a six pack of beer, a dinner of pizza and a borrowed dehydrator, he set out to change the world of peppers as we know it. After trying out different blends of sprinkle on his hot sauce-loving friends and employees, Olde V's original blend was born.
In late 2014, the Virden's decided that their discovery should be shared with the world. They took their sprinkle to their local farmers market and sold it faster than they could make it. They built a building on their property fit with dehydrators and grinders and in 2014 Olde Virden's was put on the shelves of its first grocery store.
The shelves in grocery stores are chock full of hot sauce options for those with a penchant for peppers on their pallet. Read the label on any of those products and you'll find a host of unpronounceable, taste bud-shriveling, what-in-God's-green-earth-is-that ingredients.
So what is one to do if they desire heat and flavor but want to avoid adding vinegar or xanthan gum to their almost perfect dish? That's the beauty of the sprinkle! At Olde Virden's we use just one ingredient, the freshest and tastiest peppers we can find. No additives or preservatives just fresh peppers, ground, dehydrated and ready to be sprinkled on nearly any meal.
Red Hot Sprinkle isn't just for the hot head that wants to take their spice life to the next level. Our process of dehydrating retains the flavor of our balanced blend of five peppers. Even people who don't enjoy searing heat love Olde Virden's. It adds peppery heat to your food without smothering the flavor with other ingredients. Be careful with that shaker though. Those peppers pack a punch!
Right now Olde Virden's is experiencing a bottle neck, so to speak. We have a factory in place, producing peppers as fast as we can manage. But the biggest time consumer is the dehydration process. Our current dehydrators have served us well but aren't up to snuff in keeping up with demand. If we are going to make Olde Virden's a household name we are going to need to up our game. The Harvest Saver is a commercial dehydrator that can handle the heat. It will allow us to do, in one day, what takes us two weeks with our current equipment. The harvest saver costs $16000. In the next 90 days we are working to raise the money to put the best of dehydrators in our factory.
We are also hoping to expand our product line. Not all taste buds are created the same and everyone's need for heat is different. The Harvest Saver will allow Olde V's to keep up with demand for the original blend and create tasty new pepper combinations. Plans are in the works for extra hot, Asian and Southwestern blends once the Harvest Saver is up and running.
Hot sauce has had its way with too many meals, smothering flavor with vinegar and additives. Pepper people like their heat pure and their food punchy. So if you would like to see Olde Virden's a success, please donate. And above all, say no to sauce.

Thanks to our dear friend, David Howard with Treasures in Earthen Vessels, for donating more hand made Olde Virden's coffee mugs. We are now offering them in the $150 Reward package. All of you who have already donated at that level will receive one with your package as well.
We designed our t-shirts the campaign. These t-shirts will only be available through our Kickstarter campaign. We will offer men's and women's sizes.
Risks and challenges
The only other issue that could arise is not being able to purchase peppers. We use one specific pepper that can be tricky to obtain. Luckily, this pepper is not one of the leading peppers in our blend. We have been able to dehydrate enough to keep a back stock of them. We are currently working with local farmers to plant this pepper and hope to have a steady source soon.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
