About

Welcome!

We are Lina and Ania and we are the creators of PURGATORY. We are both Architectural Designers based in Leicester, UK and we have been working on this project for over a year now.

PURGATORY is an architectural installation unmasking contemporary socio-political alternative reality. It has been created after thorough research in historical background, observation and participation in various civic affairs.

PURGATORY is a rather inconspicuous structure from the outside and it surprises with an intricate journey on the inside. We are both very satisfied with the design and we feel strongly that everyone should experience it which is why we need your help!

PURGATORY will be constructed in StudionAme in Leicester and first shared on 10th of February until 5th of March 2018 at Attenborough Arts Centre, University of Leicester, UK as part of DeStress Fest.

We received funding from Attenborough Art Centre which helped us with studio renting but we need quite a lot of money for materials as it is a 50 square metre structure!

MATERIALS WE NEED: Furniture foam, MDF boards, structural timber posts, hard board sheets, spotlights, printing, black frames, mirror roll, spray mirror glue, black paint.

If we are successful PURGATORY will then tour to venues and outdoor public spaces, drawing upon and informed by audience feedback to fuel the second part of this installation which will be developed and delivered in later 2018.

 CONTEXT

PURGATORY is a result of careful observations and analysis of our reality through the lens of politicisation of the body, from women’s rights and social behaviour to active involvement in local and global debates and demonstrations, responding and reflecting the challenges from authority.

PURGATORY was conceived under the dark cloud of the threat of an absolute abortion ban in Poland in October 2016. This we understand as a symptom of the forceful agenda of conservative politics and it triggered massive protests all over the world. This sparked many organizations and artists to rally around the cause and in turn raised greater awareness on issues concerned with women’s rights. Another manifestation of the symptoms was the election of Donald Trump in America who further vocalised the threat on women’s rights and resulted in mobilising unprecedented global Women’s Marches.

THE DESIGN

PURGATORY is our reaction to recent events in which media and politics are conflated. From the outside the installation looks like a large black room with a very small door. It leads into a dimly lit constricting corridor, forcing the participant to crawl and negotiate maze-like obstacles symbolically representing the constrictions imposed by authority and shared as riddles via the media.

The participant views posters with strong empowering messages in ‘propaganda-style’ on the walls of the maze. The posters are revealed in different lighting atmospheres and room sizes. Small openings offer views into unreachable spaces. The journey through the maze builds up tension, representing the feeling of gradually getting more and more lost in this reality. Finally, in the central space, the participant encounters an alternative reality. The space is well lit and the walls are covered with reflective material, in the middle stands a reflective box creating distorted reflections of the participant and their surroundings. Here, the participant can challenge pre-formed perceptions of body and senses and is forced to analyse this new perception, possibly as a mental confessional, a purging evoking clarity of perception. Upon exiting and returning to a world which is day lit and full of straight lines we expect the participant to evaluate everyday reality with a rediscovered scrutiny and freshly recalibrated senses.

Is this place familiar?

Is this your reality?

Purgatory has reset you.

Risks and challenges

The main risk with this project is not receiving enough funding. We would then need to finance it out of our own pockets which would mean a lot of beans on toast or just toast...

Thanks to our architectural education we had no problems with completing the technical drawings and we are getting help from friends in construction industry to build it.
