Performance festival that spotlights the Science Fiction genre and its validity as a dramatic and theatrical form
For our premier festival we have works by Science Fiction author, Ray Bradbury. Many are unseen works or short story adaptations, written expressly for the stage. The target date for the festival is weekend of August 9th.
Goal:The San Diego Science Fiction Play Festival seeks to encourage, promote and develop new theatrical works that explore science fiction and speculative fiction themes. The project also seeks to preserve these works, producing a repertoire of plays with strong Science Fiction themes.
Given its recent success in popular culture, Science Fiction is well-represented in a variety of mediums; however, its presentation is often dominated by spectacular visual and special effects, and literary themes that gravitate toward comfortable and familiar tropes. Rarely has it been exhibited as a theatrical production; it's usually thought to have ideas that are too difficult to portray on a performance stage. The San Diego Science Fiction Play Festival hopes to change that by acquiring and presenting quality science fiction plays and works for the theater.
Outcome A venue that will enjoy the invigorating energy of speculative thought coupled with the immersive, participatory environment of the dramatic stage. The results of this effort being 1) providing a new forum for genre. 2) producing new, theatrical works and 3) exhibiting the genre though a medium that can encompass it's breadth and scope
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The challenges to modern theater are considerable. When compared to the wealth of diversions that film, television and the internet provide, cultivating an audience that will support an ongoing going theater concern can be difficult. Generating the type of interest that a theatrical venue needs to survive will require a great measure of promotion, marketing and infusion of dollars. This Kickstarter campaign, while not the end all to financial considerations, will make it possible to attract an audience who can support the effort and provide the basic resources necessary to help it expand and grow. In face of a major setbacks, The San Diego Science Fiction Play Festival Project will exhibit selected works and employ several cost-effective options(such as reader theater or scene showcasing) that allow for presentation essential for audience building and vital networking with other organization and groups.
