We’ve all had this problem: you pull out your earbuds to take a call or listen to some music, and then spend the next few minutes untangling the cords. The task of untangling can be completely frustrating. Past attempts to try to solve this problem have fallen short in the areas that matter most to people on the go. They’re either too bulky, too cumbersome, or just as time-consuming as untangling your cords.
As a product designer and frequent earbud user, I sought to transform this annoyance into something people might actually enjoy. Spoolee adds a touch of fun to earbud management along with unbeatable organization, speed and convenience.
1. Super-fast Deployment - Spoolee’s unique ‘unspool’ action deploys your earbuds in under a second.
2. Comfortable & Durable - Built from soft yet durable neoprene, Spoolee can squish down flat helping it fit comfortably in tight spaces like your pocket.
3. Secure & Organized - With your headphone jack anchored in the nylon loop and your earbuds captured using the velcro strap, you can be sure your earbuds will be kept organized and secure.
4. Quick, one-time install - Once installed, You can keep Spoolee conveniently secured around your headphone jack while plugged into devices.
5. Compatible with all different types of earbuds - Spoolee is compatible with straight or right-angle jacks and even accommodates for inline volume controllers.
I have pre-production samples from our manufacturer in hand and have made a few small revisions for the next round of samples. I believe this next round will be very close to the final product.
Once sampling is complete I'll be ready to take Spoolee into production. To help us reach the minimum quantities required for production and kick off our first major run I need your support.
My name is Ray Walker and I'm an industrial designer. Over the course of my 20 year career, I’ve designed hundreds of products for many different companies. Now, I'm finally designing something for myself. A couple of years ago my wife, Sheila, came to me, with a look of frustration; she pulled a tangled rat's nest of earbuds out of her purse - and said, “You’re a product designer— can you fix this?” So I sat down with some earbuds and a sketch pad.
After a couple of days doodling, untangling, and making some quick mock-ups, it became clear that this had to be a soft goods solution.
So, I bought some fabrics and dusted off the sewing machine. Being a self-taught 'seamstress', the first prototypes were extremely crude. I spent more time breaking needles and threading bobbins than building prototypes. Finally, I dialed in my sewing skills and made some pretty decent functional prototypes. The more I tested the initial prototypes, the more features I added to make it better.
I can't thank the team at Juiceboxx Inc. enough for all of their help, support, and hard work launching Spoolee to the masses. These are some of the most talented, dedicated, and passionate guys I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Thanks again fellas!
Risks and challenges
Sample refinement: We have already received several samples from our manufacturer in a timely manner so we do not anticipate any changes in this process going forward. There's a small chance we may have to extend our sampling period if the samples do not meet our quality standards.
Production: Our manufacturer has been producing neoprene products for over 20 years and is prepared for our initial order. Production delays are unlikely but always possible with a new product such as this.
Shipping and fulfillment: We have already discussed a variety of different scenarios with reputable fulfillment companies, so we don't expect any issues.
If we experience delays, we will communicate openly and honestly about the process in a timely manner to the backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
