We are so excited to be on the home-stretch of completing our short-film, The Ballad of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. This film will be shown at a new gallery in London, Elephant West, in early September 2019 as part of their show called 'Welcome Home.'

Below is a full description of our project:

In our film, the dining room becomes a portal between worlds. More specifically, the dining room table acts as a place where preexisting notions of domesticity meet more contemporary vehicles of entrapment. The table acts a nexus between parallel realities – a place where the boundaries between the digital and the physical become blurred.  We have written, produced, and directed a film that is hugely influenced by magical realism and folklore, as well as contemporary feminist philosophy. We are interested in the ways that gender differences and inherited legacies can be challenged. The project centers around mythology, magic, and human connection. We are inspired by philosophers such as Donna Haraway, who write about tentacles, ribbons, snakes, etc. as possible new feminist symbols of intra-agency and entangled existence. The story is partly an interpretation of the Bluebeard myth (an ancient parable for female empowerment and a call to follow one’s intuition). Timeless stories such as this one establish strong links between curiosity, knowledge, sexuality, evil, and morality. Over time, they have become powerful cultural compasses that help us navigate reality, define values, and determine the significance of intellectual inquiry. Yet it is important to recognize that these tales – whether they be chronicle, myth, or parable – are also incredibly symptomatic of societal gender asymmetries as they have established problematic relationships between women and knowledge, and have cemented strong connections between femininity, sin, and evil. Bluebeard, who is a wealthy prince in the tales, is replaced by "Bluebeard Farms," a lifestyle brand that employs and henceforth traps women to be ideal spokeswomen. Each woman ("Green Guru," "Fitness Facilitator," and "Domestic Director") represents a different aspect of lifestyle obsession, and their characters are meant to question whether their extreme adherence to lifestyle trends is actually liberating, or whether it perpetuates preestablished tropes of submission. The women in the film must join forces in order to escape their parallel universe and become self-realized. The semi-satirical character vignettes that riff on YouTube tutorials and Instagram personalities are contrasted with an original poem/ballad that follows the challenges that each woman faces on her path to becoming more self-aware. The actresses in the film are, in real life, a writer, a dancer, and a visual artist, and their characters use components of their actual talents/lives to escape their trap in the film. Our film bridges dance, poetry, and satire to explore the ways that digital technology and lifestyle branding can create illusions that negate freedom and self-expression.

Risks and challenges

To finish our project, we need your help! We're truly pleased with the collaborative aspect that the film took on, and want to make sure that everyone involved feels as if they were compensated fairly. Some our outstanding expenses include: paying our actors, finishing sound editing, installation materials, and travel to London. Anything you can give would be immensely appreciated!
