About this project
We are slowly creeping up on our goal but we need YOUR help. If every person who saw our project gave $1 we would be funded already, so don't be shy about giving a little. Every bit counts. We are in talks with a couple big names about guest appearances in the film, and are already working to secure lodging and travel, along with possible materials sponsors. None of it happens unless we meet our funding goal tho! So donate and share our project with your friends!
One question people tend to have is why they should contribute to my trip. You are NOT contributing to my trip, you are helping make the documentary possible. I'm going to Brazil either way, but this film only gets made if we hit our fundraising goal!
Offsides! is a documentary following one US Soccer fan on his journey to the world cup in Brazil, with the goal of showcasing the overall fan experience and highlighting just how well soccer fans from the United States stack up to fans from around the globe. This film aims to allow all fans a glimpse into what it’s like to be at the biggest sporting event in the world, especially those who can’t afford to go the there themselves.
About the Project
Soccer fans, and the sport in general, get sort of a bad rap (or at least a dismissive eye roll) from the sports community in the United States. Soccer is supposed to be for all those other places, reserved for the hooligans of England and the drum beating dancers in Brazil. The truth is, soccer fans in the US are as diehard as they come, painting their faces, wearing soccer balls on their heads and singing and chanting to inspire their team, and even their country, to victory.
Soccer is a mater of national pride for most countries in the world, and US soccer fans feel the same way. And while a baseball fan in Baltimore could somewhat easily get to the World Series in Houston, or a football fan in Buffalo could make his way to the Super Bowl in Tampa, the same can’t be said for soccer fans. It happens once every four years, and is usually half a world away, so a trip to the World Cup is a once in a lifetime kind of trip. One that many fans can never afford to make, so this project aims to focus on the fan experience, letting those who can’t make the trip be a part of all the festivities.
Offsides! will follow Jason Tetlak, a long time soccer player, fan, former coach and even one time referee, as he fulfills his lifelong dream to go to the World Cup! Sure in the past he’s read stories online, created his own bracket to track the winners and loser, and woken up at 2AM to watch games live on TV, but nothing about the World Cup quite compares to actually being there. Or so he’s always been told. So this time, Jason plans to see for himself.
After saving for several years to make the trip, come along with him to visit the host cities, get immersed in the culture, take part in the festivities, talk with other fans, watch the games, and attempt to meet the players. We’ll document it all so the die hard US fans that couldn’t come will know exactly what its like to be there!
Sure he won’t get to do or see some things, and stuff he didn’t expect will pop up along the way, but that’s exactly the experience we plan to show, so we wouldn’t have it any other way.
One part travel show, one part soccer diplomacy, and one part “did he just do that?” Offsides! is guaranteed to score!
The official goal for this campaign is set at $2500. This will NOT cover all the costs involved, but will guarantee that a finished documentary will be made by covering the costs of editing the final film, duplicating the DVDs and delivering contributor gifts.
This is the minimum amount needed to put things together. Any additional expenses will be paid for out of pocket by Jason, so contributions in excess of the $2500 goal will allow for filming a much more elaborate, complete documentary exploring the fan experience by helping to offset the additional expenses for booking flights to Brazil, finding places to stay, paying for cameras, equipment and software needed to record, edit, and transmit videos, and help find interesting local stories, people and excursions that will be featured in the film.
You’re not just helping Jason fulfill a lifelong dream, your helping to document his adventures and share them with many other people, like yourself, who are dying to know what it is like to be a part of the World Cup experience!
Contributors to Offsides! won’t have to wait for the film to come out, you will be able to follow Jason’s progress in real time by way of daily “on location” videos and check-ins uploaded directly from Brazil!
Risks and challenges
Having completed a project similar to this one in the past, I know there are set backs that are possible, but the great part of this project is that we are documenting the experience so those set backs become part of the project! Whether it be problems booking tickets or issues getting into the games, those stories would become part of the film and not effect the final product.
There are possibilities of delays in the post production and editing of the final film, or in the duplicating of the DVDs, but since I am doing most of that work without outsourcing to a partner or collaborator, those would be minor and would be addressed by way of contributor updates to keep everyone in the loop.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
