About

Tall Poppies is an optimistic documentary response to the current critical, industry and cultural opinion that something is inherently 'wrong' with the Australian film industry. It posits that Australia has, throughout the history of cinema, experienced cycles of exceptional quality productions followed by a period of critical and commercial flops, and that as we enter the middle of the 2010s, the Australian film industry is experiencing a return to form of sorts, the end of a weak period and the beginning of a strong.

We, as filmmakers, want to have fun with this project. We should never lose sight of that and descend into doom and gloom. We're making this for Australian film fans. Think Not Quite Hollywood for Australian film's future, not just its history.

We want to produce a 90 min documentary for theatrical distribution, along with 4 x 30 min TV episodes to go to air. The bulk of the content will be interviews with filmmakers, actors, commentators, journalists, funding bodies, distributors and cultural gate-keepers, as well as overlay from the most exciting and relevant Australian films we can get our hands on.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk to this project's completion is access to the kind of voices that our audience actually wants to hear from - big name players in the Australian and international film industries.

Through our blog, Any Camera Will Do, the makers of this documentary already have connections with dozens of the names we'd like to get involved in this project, as well as a fair reputation as a positive force in the Australian industry. The work we've done so far has taught us a lot about contact and communicating with industry professionals, so when the time comes to create the film, this should not be a difficult hurdle to overcome.

Keeping the energy up - and the enthusiasm for the subject matter - also shouldn't be hard. The team behind the production are award winning filmmakers, so they know how to give you a good show and keep you entertained, and have kept their numbers quite small so that crew morale is an easily handled issue.

How are we using the funds raised?

1) We want to maximise our production values by purchasing a Redrock Micro One Man Crew & some additional lighting gear. This will allow us to secure great images with a moving camera while still allowing the small crew the freedom to get the most mind blowing responses from our interviewees. Nathaniel C.T. Jackson (the film's producer and one of the driving forces for the film's vision) recently received numerous positive reviews and a Cinematography award from the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema for his work on independent feature 54 Days, so believe us when we tell you that a step up in our production values will turn out a gorgeous looking film.

2) In order to make this movie the most exciting movie about movies you've ever movied, we want to use a bunch of footage from your favourite Australia films of the past, as well as push the boundaries of what we ask some of Australian film's biggest names (and biggest rivals!) That sort of thing is always tied up in a lot of legal red-tape; so we need a helping hand to speak to people in the know (ie. lawyers) to ensure that the 'behind the scenes' of the film doesn't end with a title card telling you about how we're now in prison because of copyright infringement.

3) In show business, you need some business to show - which is why we want to make this movie. But the business side of the equation is trickier. We need your help to push this movie's message of positivity and creative adventure out into the world, for all audiences to see. Your pledge is going to help us do that.
