Apogee Aerial Dance Festival brings together innovative performers and instructors in aerial dance and circus arts from across the country for a week full of aerial workshops, panel discussions, performances, and a variety of other events. This festival seeks to welcome new voices to the thriving circus community that already exists in Seattle.
Be A Part of the Festival
Conversations with our aerial community's wants and needs are shaping the festival program. Through October and November, your help-- with your support in this Kickstarter campaign, by spreading the word on social media, by sharing your feedback and ideas-- will make sure we bring together top notch artists and venues for this first ever event.
For every contribution large or small we're delighted to share:
- An invitation to a private backer's party with festival instructors
- A shout-out to backers on social media
- First access to early bird AADF festival registration
We're having a lot of really inspiring conversations with aerialists and instructors from all over the US. Already confirmed for festival instructors are the amazingly talented Jenn Bruyer, Dream Frohe, April Skelton, and we anticipate many more exciting announcements to make in the coming weeks.
Goals of AADF
Our budget threshold to make the festival happen is $7,000. This covers the cost of artist stipends, venue costs, and behind-the-scenes production efforts.
Our stretch goals of $10,000, $12,000, $15,000, and $25,000 allow for even more amazing events to be part of the festival, including deeper community involvement, more fabulous workshops and performances, and seed funding for our Incubator program to continue our performance programming and artist development into 2018.
Who's Behind the Festival?
When we come together to share knowledge, to share our skills, to share our passions and our creativity, we all come away from that richer. We all become better artists. We create better work. Audiences have more profound and moving experiences. We learn a little bit more about ourselves. We find new tools to tell our stories. We challenge ourselves and we all find our little triumphs along the way.
AADF was born out of Apex Aerial Arts and our passion for aerial dance. Even though we are a new studio, members of our staff have been a part of the Seattle aerial community for a decade or more.
We're also working with members of the Seattle circus community to build out this festival.
Versatile Arts will be hosting some of our workshops and will be bringing workshops specifically for Seattle's teenage aerialists to AADF.
And we'll have more announcements of AADF collaborators coming soon!
Founder of AADF
Goldie Jones, owner of Apex Aerial Arts
Aerial and aerial dance has had such an incredible influence on my life and my perspective as an artist. Not just doing aerial myself, but watching the work of aerialists in this community, learning from other performers, meeting other amazing people that are all inspired by and dedicated to exploring this art form.
I want to help that space grow, to give people more access and more opportunities to experience an art that I deeply love. Apex Aerial Arts was the beginning of that. Apogee Aerial Dance Festival is the next step and I hope a gateway to creating more opportunities for the aerial community in Seattle.
Risks and challenges
While it's thrilling to put together Seattle's first aerial dance festival, we're also pioneering this event and anticipating some hiccups. Between the number of talented people involved, multiple venues, and many days of workshops, events and performances, something is bound to jump off track. Art doesn't always organize itself, right?
Fortunately we here at Apogee Aerial Dance Festival world headquarters have decades of experience putting together productions and events, as well as the behind-the-scenes administrative savvy to keep things running smoothly when the unexpected happens.
Collaborations and community involvement are critical to this festival's success. The Seattle network of aerial, dance, and circus enthusiasts are an amazing bunch of people. The Apogee Aerial Dance Festival is coming together with the vital contribution of the team at Apex Aerial Arts, Versatile Arts, members of the aerial community, and the volunteers that have stepped up to keep this ship sailing smoothly.
Our team has been producing events, film, and other artist-based productions for years through our sister company, Subversionz Media. At one point or another we and our collaborators have worked and played for over a decade at many local circus organizations in a variety of roles, including the School of Acrobatics & New Circus Arts (SANCA), Moisture Festival, Versatile Arts, and more.
Further, Apex Aerial Arts and Versatile Arts regularly produce complicated class schedules and shows. Apex recently produced the Prismatic show in addition to performances at local events such as Pridefest and Lusio.
We're confident that, between the contributions of the fabulous humans in our community and everyone's commitment to the AADF we can pull together an aerial dance festival that is a rewarding experience for aerialists and audiences alike.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
