***PROJECT NAME HAS CHANGED TO "SCOPA OSCURA". READ UPDATE #3 FOR MORE INFORMATION***
Long before there were spades, hearts, diamonds, and clubs, playing cards had very different suits. Mandrake Playing Card Company is bringing those suits back to life with the new Scopa Oscura deck. Incorporating a new, minimalist design with the images from the Napoletane Italian playing cards, Scopa Scuro is an updated look for a centuries old tradition.
Italian decks have 40 cards: four suits (clubs, coins, cups, and swords), numbered 1-7, with knave, knight, and king. The most common game is Scopa, a fishing type game usually played with 2 or 4 players. Check out pagat.com's page on Scopa for rules. There are plenty of other games that can be played with this deck too!
A black background offsets the stark whiteness of each image, contrasting and making it easy to identify each card's unique features. Some details on the pips have been simplified to keep with the minimalist feel and they have been mirrored to mimic the look of French decks.
The face cards have also been changed, instead of full figured images they have been cut in half and mirrored to be more easily distinguishable from any angle. We chose each horizontal cut carefully to give each image a sense of fluidity.
Since these decks are being printed by MPC, you know they will be high quality cards. We are using poker-size, linen stock that is easy to handle and feels great to play with. Each deck includes 40 playing cards, an instruction card for Scopa and Briscola, and two gaff cards, in a custom tuck box.
Along with decks, we also have uncut sheets available for purchase.
MPC will also be my fulfillment center so shipping is as follows:
- $6 - first item
- +$1 - every item extra for US orders
- +$2 - every item extra for the rest of the World
If this campaign reaches $4,000 I will include a seal over the top of the tuck box.
If this campaign reaches $5,000 I will include a 8, 9, and 10 of each suit to make this is a 52-card deck.
If this campaign reaches $6,000 I will include 2 Jokers, bringing it up to a 54-card deck.
If this campaign reaches $7,000 I will have the cards printed on MPC's Linen Air card stock. This is comparable to USPCC and EPCC's stock, but I have to order a minimum of 1000 decks to make this possible.

Risks and challenges
Most of the art is complete for this deck and so we only have a few more things to work out. There should be very minimal challenges in our project. The only risks we may run into are shipping and fulfillment issues. We are planning to have all rewards shipped by June 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
