Cuban Gladiators

We can be worn down on the outside but our hearts are still hungrily pumping and pushing us forward.

About

Cuba is a beautiful country like no other. A country where the people are as vibrant and contrasting as the green sugarcane fields are to the crystal blue waves breaking on its white sand beaches. In between all of that you will find La Habana, our capital and my hometown, the beating heart of the Cuban people. True, the appearance is worn and out dated, visually stuck in a time when our Grandparents were pushing for political change. As you drive down Paseo del Prado in your 1950’s rental car you will see walls crumbling and the vibrant paint of our houses faded by weather and time.

On a recent trip home I was introduced to this amazing movement in the practice of mixed martial arts called Judo Kick Box or JKB https://www.facebook.com/judokickbox.jkb/. Having grown up practicing karate and Taekwondo since an early age, the concept immediately caught my attention. JKB is the first professional organization of its kind in Cuba and over the last four years they have gained much respect and prestige. Not only does JKB train their fighters to be the best and the strongest on the mat but in life as well, providing support and discipline to keep both the kids and adults out of trouble. I jumped at the opportunity to meet with the trainer and co-founder of the organization, Sarvelio Bello, to learn more about him and the other athletes. After sitting in on a typical four-hour training session, I was hooked. The speed, the agility, the determination to keep going, keep pushing past the blood sweat and tears. Inside them all is passion and love for what they are doing. They are fighting for their families, their community, and themselves, not a check.

After reflecting back on the conversations with Sarvelio and reviewing the footage I had taken and upon my return to New York, I was more motivated than before. I reached out to Carlos Filane https://www.facebook.com/carlos.finales, the President of JKB, to see how I could help. He explained they have worn out their equipment and small facility, left with torn mats and old tires instead of punching bags. It was time to spread the word. A local trainer in New York donated gloves and other equipment that I was able to send to them immediately and while it’s a great start it is not enough, so my friends and I decided to do what we do best: Tell the story through a camera lens.

Risks and challenges

Cuba is a challenge on its own. The permits are really hard to get since they have to be review and accepted by the Government, the sport association and the film commissioners, but my producer in the island is really confident with the fact that he can get us all the necessary permits and the equipment rentals that we need to start right on time in febuary.

In order for us to make our documentary happen we need your help. This Kickstarter is to raise enough funds to cover the necessary permits, travel costs for the crew, lighting and camera equipment, transportation, as well as the final editing of our documentary. Any additional equipment donation for the athletes is also welcome and conversation can be directed to JKBdocumentary@gmail.com
